In
the most recent meeting of the Instituto Cervantes’ Book Club on the 14th
of January 2020, the club’s reader discussed Antonio Orejudo’s fifth book, Los
cinco y yo (‘Five and I’). The novel, set in 1970s Spain, centres on the
narrator Toni and his memories of his school life during the later years of
Francoism. The narrator infuses his memories with the aventures of Enid
Blyton’s ‘Famous Five’, combining literary fiction with the real-life events of
his childhood. On a much deeper level, as many critics have pointed out, the defining
aspect of this novel lies in its representation of Toni’s imagining of a
different childhood and the need to enjoy childhood to the fullest extent.

With
regards to content, one aspect of the novel that drew readers’ attention was the
role of fiction and its influence on the reader’s ability to understand and
enjoy the novel. Although many readers, the majority of whom Irish, understood
the importance of the cultural reference to the novels of Enid Blyton and their
depiction of a care-free youth, various readers argued that this mixture of
real-life and fictional events hampered their ability to identify with the
narrator’s experiences. On the other hand, other readers believe that this was
a purely sentimental decision from the author, thus allowing the reader to
properly understand the desire for freedom that characterised his generation and
their need to imagine a different childhood to the one they lived.

Although
the readers couldn’t agree on the value of this combination of real-life and
fictional events, almost all agreed that this novel sheds a deeper light on the
role of literature as an important modern escape route upon which we have all
come to depend. In this sense, through his reference to the novels of Enid
Blyton, Orejudo reminds us of the capacity of literature to free us of our
reality and to allow us to enter into a world entirely different to our own. To
this effect, Orejudo’s decision to incorporate the adventures of the ‘Famous
Five’ into his own novel exposes his own yearning to experience the desires
that he once dreamed of as a child.

In
addition to discussing the content of the first half of the novel, the
conversation quickly moved to the ability of this novel to appeal to an entire
generation, such is its representation of a care-free youth and the most
intimate hopes of its characters. Despite the importance attached to literary
fiction within the novel and the absence of a true portrayal of the narrator’s
childhood, it appears that the author’s deeper message centres on the
significance of childhood freedom and our need, as adults, to learn from their
own sense of abandon. In other words, his use of the adventures of the ‘Famous
Five’ the author to connect with his generation through this depiction of
carefree youth, thus emphasising the contrast between a childhood sense of
abandon and the worries and stresses underpinning adult life.

In
essence, this novel offers a clear image of the experiences and emotions of a
forgotten generation of Spaniards without a role during the Transition
(1975-1982) and who now feel undervalued for their contribution to the
consolidation of Spanish democracy. As many
readers have highlighted, Orejudo’s novel encompasses the experiences of
an entire generation, owing to its lucid vision of the realities of their
modern existence and their longing for the hopes and freedoms that ought to
have marked their youth.

Text by Philip McGinness
