A

Texto
de Philip McGuinness

Días sin ti, book cover

On the 15th February, the
Book Club of the Instituto Cervantes (Dublin) convened over Zoom to discuss the
novel, Días sin ti by Elvira Sastre. In the course of this novel, we
learn of the connected stories of Dora, a teacher during the Second Spanish
Republic, and her grandson Gael, a young man who tells us of his relationship
with the novel’s third protagonist, Marta. Through this portrayal of the
development of the relationship between Gael and Marta, this novel offers an
important message on the importance of our closest relationships and the
ability of love to carry us through our most difficult moments.

Throughout the course of Días sin
ti, the author immerses us in Gael’s reflections as he navigates the
different stages of his relationship with Marta whilst recalling his
grandmother’s advice. When discussing this topic of narrative style, various
readers highlighted the author’s tendency to focus too heavily on Gael’s person
reflections without developing a clearer plot or telling us anything of the
events that have helped shape the relationship between Marta and Gael. In other
words, while reminding us of the importance of love in our own lives, through
Gaels’ reflections, we never fully understand what love means for either of the
novel’s protagonists. Nonetheless, through this focus on the protagonist’s
reflections, the author reminds us of the value of our most intimate
relationships and how we struggle to cultivate and protect the love between
ourselves and our loved ones.

In addition to discussing the
narrative style, various other readers highlighted the image of masculinity portrayed
in the novel. As we discover Gael’s most intimate reflections on the subject of
love, we come to understand how well he understands his partner and his
acknowledgment of the impossibility of their continued relationship. Having
developed an obviously close relationship with his grandmother, Gael thus
becomes a positive symbol for masculinity, such is his understanding of his
partner’s wishes. Through this depiction of Gael’s relationships with his
grandmother and partner, we understand the importance he attaches to mutual
respect and how the author carefully crafts an image of a healthy masculinity
that may serve as an example in a world still dominated by a sense of machismo.

Another aspect of the novel
discussed by the readers centred on the poetic writing style that characterises
Gael’s reflections. As the novel progresses, we come to accept the importance
of a poetic use of language in helping the reader to understand the depth of
emotion associated with the highs and lows of a relationship. However,
according to several participants, the author seems to focus too heavily on
moulding carefully-considered sentences without choosing to employ a simpler or
more accessible prose. Although the writer’s characteristic poetic style allows
us to better understand the diverse emotions endured by the protagonist
throughout the course of his relationship, the absence of a simpler or clearer
use of language sometimes inhibits our ability to fully grasp how he feels at
certain key moments in the text.

In summary, despite its distinct
narrative style and linguistic complexity, this novel provides a deep message
on the importance of cultivating loving relationships with our friends and
family and how our dependence on such relationships makes parting all the more
difficult. In this sense, as many of our readers have highlighted, the author
expertly reminds us of our endless search for love and its ability to sustain
us continuously during our most difficult moments.

Text
by Philip McGuinness
