The historical past and the bright future of Spanish comics.

Exhibition dedicated to the evolution of the comic genre in Spain: witness the changes with the best of Spanish creative minds.

Galway is unfortunately not known for warm and sunny weather, and this October 4 was not an exception. However, the cultural scene of the city was celebrating a special event on that day – an event that brought the warmest colours and a bit of Spanish sunlight to everyone willing to participate.

In the framework of the Galway Cartoon Festival (October 1-9, 2021), our Institute was lucky enough to present an exhibition called 20 Years of Injuve Comic Awards, which traces the creative paths of Spanish comic artists throughout the years that they dedicated to this enriching, inspiring and rapidly developing genre. The curator of the exhibition Gerardo Vilches has literally captured the 20 -yearlong flow of artistic creativity, since he has masterfully selected two artworks from each of the authors (one is an Injuve award winner from the past, and the other is current).

Injuve is an abbreviation for the Instituto de la Juventud – a Spanish public organization promoting activities dedicated to the youth. Throughout the years, it has played a very important role in the forming of modern Spanish artistic scene by supporting ground-breaking projects and initiating awards (like the Comic award itself). And, even though the name Injuve contains the word “youth” and the comic genre is traditionally associated with young public, there is no doubt that modern Spanish comics will attract the public of all ages. It is also unquestionable that the exhibition´s curator has made a tremendous work in proving this point, having selected a wide range of represented themes. They vary all the way from colourful children´s book illustrations (Yo oso and L´Escala de la Donzella by Marta Chaves) to politically engaged comics (Persona Evolutiva and Il Signore K e la politica tedesca by Elías Taño) and obscure representations of the artist’s emotions (El Camino del Titiritero and El paraíso perdido by Pablo Auladell).

During the opening ceremony, Laura Martín Blas, the arts officer of the Instituto Cervantes Dublin, mentioned that the works presented in the exhibition inevitably depict change, not only in the history of the comic genre in Spain, but also in the work of the artists themselves. She noted that, historically, the comic scene in Spain has gone through both very drastic changes – the end of the dictatorship led by Franco allowed more humoristic images to be present in the society— and some more subtle ones that happened from the 80s to the 90s and marked a transition from the turbulent to more calm times. The end of the 90s brought a revival to Spanish comic art, as the artists started to use not only humour, but also drama and fantasy in their works.

The exhibition does not only depict historical evolution. We also see the evolution in the artistic approach of the artists. While some of them decided to be loyal to their original creative style (Martín Romero, Martín López Lam or Antonio Hitos), some of the current artworks can hardly be attributed to the same author, compared to their ancestors (Álvaro Ortiz, Brais Rodríguez or Francisco Marchante).

The opening ceremony showed all its visitors that, after seeing the exhibition, they would witness changes in the history of comics, changes in artistic style and… eventually, changes in the weather. The few following days have brought sunlight and warmth to Galway, as if the weather was celebrating with us.

Moreover, the great news is that, after spending a few more days in Galway (Cornstore 2020 Hub. Unit 15, Middle Street, Galway, Ireland), the exhibition will travel to Dun Laoghaire. Lead by its curator Gerardo Vilches, the opening will take place on November 9 in the dlr LexIcon cultural centre (Level 4 Haigh Terrace, Moran Park A96 H283 Dún Laoghaire, Ireland), and the visitors will be able to enjoy the exhibition up until January 7.
