De ah\u00ed viene el nombre de los sefard\u00edes, los jud\u00edos que viv\u00edan en la regi\u00f3n de la Espa\u00f1a actual. Esta etnia perdi\u00f3 su territorio de origen en 1492 al ser expulsada por los Reyes Cat\u00f3licos. Desde entonces, los sefard\u00edes se han extendido por todo el mundo, desde los Balcanes y Grecia hasta el norte de \u00c1frica. El Instituto Cervantes de Dubl\u00edn conversa con la investigadora en la cultura sefard\u00ed, Katerina Garc\u00eda, sobre dos de los elementos que mantienen unido a un grupo tan diseminado: la lengua y la m\u00fasica. Tambi\u00e9n encontramos algunos paralelismos con el destino de Irlanda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Los sefard\u00edes hablan una lengua que nunca ha sido oficial en ning\u00fan pa\u00eds: el judeoespa\u00f1ol. Carece de una gram\u00e1tica normativa publicada y se desarrolla de forma muy org\u00e1nica, hablada sobre todo en casa o entre familiares. No obstante, en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas ha crecido enormemente el inter\u00e9s acad\u00e9mico en su estudio. Tiene una base ling\u00fc\u00edstica del castellano medieval con un componente sem\u00edtico (hebreo). Los numerosos pa\u00edses en los que viven actualmente los sefard\u00edes tambi\u00e9n han influido mucho en el judeoespa\u00f1ol. Naci\u00f3 en la Rep\u00fablica Checa, creci\u00f3 en Espa\u00f1a, se doctor\u00f3 en la Universidad Carolina de Praga y actualmente vive en Irlanda. Imparte clases en el Departamento de Estudios Hisp\u00e1nicos de Trinity College Dublin donde desarrolla su <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KaterinaGarcia.Singer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carrera musical.<\/a> Dice que su inter\u00e9s por el tema principal que investiga\u2014la m\u00fasica sefard\u00ed\u2014 proviene de su trayectoria personal. Lo que m\u00e1s le atrae es el sincretismo de elementos culturales presentes en su m\u00fasica y lengua. La m\u00fasica sefard\u00ed es especial por su diversidad: adem\u00e1s de basarse en una lengua y cultura hisp\u00e1nica, incorpora motivos turcos, griegos y norteafricanos, en funci\u00f3n del territorio donde se encuentra cada comunidad sefard\u00ed y sus tradiciones musicales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tras la inmensa p\u00e9rdida de poblaci\u00f3n sefard\u00ed europea durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la asimilaci\u00f3n ling\u00fc\u00edstica, se produjo un declive del uso del judeoespa\u00f1ol. Los elementos de la tradici\u00f3n, como la cocina o la m\u00fasica, se convierten en importantes espacios para el mantenimiento de memorias colectivas. Tanto irlandeses como sefard\u00edes se extienden por el mundo creando una m\u00fasica \u00e9tnica de gran impacto. La m\u00fasica irlandesa a menudo atrae al p\u00fablico local e internacional, aunque las letras no siempre se entiendan. Generan un aura de medievalismo y antig\u00fcedad a su alrededor, motivada especialmente por los v\u00ednculos intertextuales que unen el romancero sefard\u00ed con el romancero hisp\u00e1nico. Sin embargo, Katerina destaca que, aunque hay ejemplos muy antiguos de esta m\u00fasica, la mayor parte de las canciones sefard\u00edes conocidas por el p\u00fablico de hoy se compusieron en la di\u00e1spora, despu\u00e9s de 1492.&nbsp; Por ello, al trabajar en esta m\u00fasica, Katerina la presenta como su visi\u00f3n particular de la tradici\u00f3n sefard\u00ed, sin intenci\u00f3n de apropiarse de ella. Asimismo, c que la identidad musical de los sefard\u00edes prosperar\u00e1 mediante interpretaciones informadas y respetuosas con la tradici\u00f3n, mezcladas con una dosis sana de innovaci\u00f3n y experimentaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Os presentamos algunos m\u00fasicos modernos que trabajan con la tradici\u00f3n musical sefard\u00ed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morkarbasi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mor Karbasi<\/a>, que combina la riqueza de su legado musical sefard\u00ed con elementos de otras m\u00fasicas, entre ellas el flamenco.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yasminlevy.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yasmin Levy<\/a>, que incorpora elementos de m\u00fasica contempor\u00e1nea para un sonido \u201cmoderno\u201d.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/mara-aranda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mara Aranda<\/a>, cantante y compositora valenciana especialista en m\u00fasica antigua, reconocida internacionalmente por sus grabaciones de cantes tradicionales de la di\u00e1spora sefard\u00ed, en especial de Marruecos.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiosefarad.com\/tag\/vanessa-paloma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanessa Paloma Elbaz<\/a>, int\u00e9rprete, etnomusic\u00f3loga y destacada especialista en la tradici\u00f3n musical de los jud\u00edos de Marruecos.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Recientemente, Katerina ha vuelto a los escenarios, tras dos a\u00f1os sin poder actuar en vivo con su grupo dublin\u00e9s. El concierto, parte del programa del festival <a href=\"https:\/\/mothertonguesfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mother Tongues Festival<\/a>, incluy\u00f3 un repertorio variado de canciones bohemias, irlandesas y sefard\u00edes e incluso ense\u00f1aron al p\u00fablico una canci\u00f3n en judeoespa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Texto: Ekaterina Dragalina<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\"><strong>Academic and musician Katerina Garc\u00eda talks about the Sephardic Jews and the quest for identity through music<\/strong>. Today\u2019s talk is dedicated to International Mother Language Day, which takes place on 21<sup>st<\/sup> February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\"><em>Sepharad <\/em>is the biblical Hebrew denomination of the Iberian Peninsula. That is where the name of the Sephardi \u2013 the Jews who lived in the region of modern Spain \u2013&nbsp;comes from. This ethnic group lost their home territory in 1492 after being expelled by the Catholic Monarchs. Since then, the Sephardi have spread all over the world, from the Balkans and Greece to North Africa. Instituto Cervantes Dublin had a talk with researcher of Sephardic culture, Katerina Garc\u00eda, about the two of the elements that keep such a disseminated group together \u2013 language and music. We also found some parallels with the fate of the Irish nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">The language of Sephardic Jews has never been official in any country. It is called Judeo-Spanish. It does not have an officially published, normative grammar and develops in a very organic way, spoken mostly at home or between family members. Nonetheless, it has seen a dramatic surge in academic interest in recent decades. It has a linguistic base of Medieval Castilian, with a Semitic (Hebrew) component. The numerous countries where the Sephardi people live now have also influenced Judeo-Spanish greatly. In many songs composed in this language we can hear words of Turkish, Greek, Slavic and even Arabic origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z0KsDnONhSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Link to a video interview with Moshe Shaul, director of a Sephardic radio program and activist for the promotion of Judeo Spanish in Israel<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Katerina Garc\u00eda is a truly multicultural investigator and performer. She was born in the Czech Republic, grew up in Spain, pursued a PhD at the Charles University of Prague and currently lives in Ireland. She teaches at Trinity College\u2019s Department of Hispanic Studies and pursues her <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KaterinaGarcia.Singer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">musical career<\/a><\/strong>. That said, she mentioned that her interest in Sephardic music comes from her background. It is the syncretism of cultural elements in this music and its language that attracts her the most. In very broad and generalizing terms, Sephardic music is extraordinary because of its diversity: being based on a Hispanic language and culture, it also has Northern African, Turkish, or Greek motifs, depending on the geographical area and its musical tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">There has been an ensuing gradual decline in the use of Judeo-Spanish after the enormous tragedy of the Second World War, which affected very drastically the Sephardic population of Europe. Now it is mostly traditions such as music, or cooking, to name a few, which are so important for the maintaining of collective memories. Music in particular has the ability to evoke strong emotions and, at the same time, it can perpetuate a language that has been, since the War, severely endangered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JSK1-GyEvNg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Link to a video of Katerina performing in Judeo-Spanish with her band, Kon Sira<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Katerina mentioned that, as the Sephardic music takes shape and forges its identity in the diaspora, she cannot help but see similarities in the musical destiny of the Irish. After all, Both the Irish and the Sephardic Jews are disseminated all over the world and created ethnic music of very big impact. Irish music often attracts local and international listeners, and this interest reaches across the boundaries of languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Historical and cultural similarities between the two diasporas often resulted in them showing interest in one another. Katerina remembered an example of such a peculiar fusion \u2013 musicians Matt Darriau and Lisa Gutkin from the New York-based Klezmer-Jazz band <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.klezmatics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Klezmatics<\/strong><\/a>, also performing in a Celtic fusion band called Whirligig. She also recalled a song that commemorates how the cultures of the two ethnicities contributed to the \u201cbuilding\u201d of the United States: <strong>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for the Irish and the Jews\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aIU7FsY6Nkc\" target=\"_blank\">Link to the song \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for the Irish and the Jews by Mick Moloney: YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Many artists experiment with Sephardic music and sometimes surround it with an aura of medievalism and remoteness, mostly based on the documented intertextual links between the Sephardic and Spanish <em>romanceros<\/em>. However, Katerina emphasizes that, even though there are some ancient examples of this music, most of the Sephardic songs that are known among the public today were composed in the diaspora, after 1942.&nbsp; As for herself, while working on her music, she presents it as her own vision of the Sephardic tradition, without any intention to appropriate it. She believes that the musical heritage of the Sephardi people will thrive through an informed and respectful interpretation, combined with a healthy degree of experimentation and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Here are a few modern musicians that work with the Sephardic musical tradition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morkarbasi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mor Karbasi<\/a>, who combines her Sephardic musical heritage with other diverse influences, including Flamenco<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yasminlevy.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yasmin Levy<\/a>, who uses a range of modern musical influences to create a contemporary style<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/mara-aranda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mara Aranda<\/a>, Valencian singer and composer, specialist in Early music, most recently known for her recordings of traditional Sephardic, and in particular Moroccan, <em>cantes<\/em><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiosefarad.com\/tag\/vanessa-paloma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanessa Paloma Elbaz<\/a>, performer, folklore collector and eminent specialist in Moroccan Jewish music<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0071a1\">Recently, Katerina came back to the stage with her Dublin band after two years of not being able to perform live. The concert formed part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mothertonguesfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mother Tongues Festival<\/a> and included a varied repertoire of Bohemian, Irish and Sephardic songs.
