In her famous novel, La mujer nueva, Carmen Laforet offers a telling insight into the inequalities endured by women under Francoism owing to deep-rooted attitudes surrounding their traditional roles that condemned them to a lower social position. As we see through the struggle of our protagonist, Paulina, to forge a new life for herself and transcend traditional gender roles, women were obliged to dedicate themselves fully to their roles as mothers and wives. In Francoist society, a woman’s role consisted in attending to the needs of their husbands and to encourage the practice of Catholicism through their adherence to values such as humility as well as their teaching of the children as regards the importance of their Catholic faith to their overall identity. Regarding the historical context, our protagonist’s struggle reflects the changing attitudes on the part of some women under Francoism as regards their lower social position arising from their need to undertake new roles as workers outside of the home due to economic necessity.

La mujer nueva centres on the story of Paulina, a middle-aged woman, who is trying to build a more independent life for herself after separating from her husband. On a general level, the most interesting aspect of this novel is its portrayal of Paulina’s complete rejection of prescribed gender roles and her indifference to the attitudes of others regarding her own breaking of these social codes to which she was subject. Throughout the entire novel, Paulina demonstrates her strong objection to the dicta of Francoist society surrounding gender through her refusal to focus solely and absolutely on her obligations as a mother and affording equal time to her search for a new partner. To this end, this novel is honestly shocking for the protagonist’s decision to rebel totally against established gender roles and to assume new responsibilities as a worker in trying to fulfill her desires as a woman and human being.

As many critics have pointed out, this novel continues to attract the attention of contemporary readers because of Paulina’s attitude towards motherhood in the context of the pressure to which women were subjected under Francoism to be mothers and to fulfill the obligations of this role committedly. Under the Francoist regime, girls learned from a very early age about how to be a good mother and how they ought to see motherhood as a social function which would help to reinforce the Catholic nature of the Francoist state whilst also serving to build a more stable and generous society. Whilst Pauline recognises the value of motherhood and her responsibility to try her utmost to care for her son, she signals her desire to become independent and not constantly attending to her child without the opportunity to pursue her interests or establish other relationships. With this insight into the refusal of one woman to submit to herself to the pressure to confirm to social expectations, Laforet shines an important light on the inability of this woman to feel completely fulfilled whilst only carrying out her duties as a mother and wife.

On the whole, La mujer nueva offers a fascinating image of the desire of women to carry out new roles and gain their own independence instead of being condemned forever to attend to the needs of the husbands and children within the home. In the context of Spanish women’s writing of the 1950s, Laforet provides a cutting critique of the pressure to which women were subjected in conforming to social expectations and to become the ‘perfect wife’. In this way, this novel served to make a new generation of Spanish women aware of the difficult situation endured by Spanish women and the need to fight collectively for the wider consolidation of women’s rights.

Text by Philip McGuinness
