Nevertheless, the novel tells the story of the final stages of Lucas’ life, an elderly man, who lives alongside his sister, María, whom, together exchange stories of their pasts and the hopes and aspirations they have harboured throughout their lives and still wish to, one day, fulfil. Throughout the novel, the author focuses our attention specifically on the development of the relationship between the two elderly siblings and Marcos, a young musician, who ends up living with them both. By way of this unexpected relationship, and indeed, the relationships between all the characters, the novel reveals the desire of all human beings to share our memories and our interest in receiving and understanding those of others.

With regards the relationship between the two elderly siblings, the novels illustrates their shared need to remember together by way of a regular conservations as a means of widening their mental image of their earliest years. More specifically, through these conservations, they encourage each other to continue to try to rescue their forgotten memories of their past. In the case of María, we are aware of her dependence on such conservations with others as a means of understanding the world from different perspectives and thus, enabling her to construct her own written stories. In this respect, the reader soon comes to reflect on our shared desire as human beings to share our memories as a means of improving our recollections of our lived experiences, but also, our eagerness to listen to those of others as a means of gaining a better understanding of the events that have shaped their lives.

Whilst focusing our attention on this interdependent relationship between the two elderly siblings, the novel also throws important light on the subject of intergenerational friendships, through the figure of Marcos, a young ‘okupa’ with whom they decide to share their lives. Throughout the novel, we quickly come to release the closeness of the relationship between Marcos and the two elderly siblings and the mutual trust and understanding that exists between them. Through Marcos’ desire to listen attentively to the tales of the two elderly siblings, the novel attempts to demonstrate the litany of lessons we can take from our older relatives and friends and how we ought to live together with such members of society instead of viewing them exclusively from a crude economic or commercial perspective. In the case of Marcos, we observe his willingness to offer help to the siblings but also his desire to show them proper respect by listening to their tales and understanding the value of their advice.

At its core, this novel continues to captivate readers such is its intimate portrayal of the important of communication in human relationships and specifically, how we depend on a such constant interhuman communications in order to feel loved and valued. In this novel, the reader can easily identify with the characters such is their desire to maintain constant interhuman communications and to listen to others’ perspectives as a means of better understanding themselves and the world around them.

Text by Frank McGinness
