Even the olives are crying.

In October 22nd 2011, at age 83, Cathal O’Shannon passed away. He was one of the main icons of the Irish journalism of the last century. In September last year, the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) broadcast a special programme to pay tribute to his career.

The Dubliner Cathal O’Shannon was a journalist and TV host most of his life, but he always was an adventurer too, a man devoted to his ideals. At age 16, he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) with a friend in order to fight in World War II, although they both had to falsify their ages, something he remembered as an endearing anecdote.

He career as a journalist started at the Londonoffices of The Irish Times. That’s where he met Patsy, who became his wife for more than 50 years, until she died in 2006. After working as a foreign correspondent for the same newspaper, and a short stay at the BBC, O’Shannon came back to Irelandto work for RTÉ, where some mythical interviews like his face to face with Muhammed Ali in 1972 established him as one of the greatest.

We can’t omit Cathal O’Shannon’s career as a documentary maker, which constitutes his link with Spain: the award-winning documentary Even the olives are bleeding describes the reality of the Irish soldiers who fought in the Spanish Civil War, on one side or the other.

The documentary, available in our library, responds to the personal interest of O’Shannon in the bloody Spanish conflict: “I was fascinated by the Spanish Civil War ever since I was l0 years of age… Irish men fought on both sides. All men of great conviction on whichever side they were, men who went to sacrifice their lives for their beliefs.”

For these reasons …, from Instituto Cervantes, we want to join the voices raised to pay tribute to O’Shannon.
