Fue titular de la \u201cC\u00e1tedra Forbes de Estudios Hisp\u00e1nicos\u201d en la Universidad de<b> <\/b>Edimburgo, profesor en Birkbeck College, Universidad de Londres, y en Trinity College, Dublin. Ha sido profesor visitante en las universidades de Stanford, Cornell, Denver-Colorado, y en la Universidad de\u00a0 S\u00e3o Paulo, Brasil. Sus publicaciones reflejan su inter\u00e9s tanto por Am\u00e9rica Latina como por la Espa\u00f1a del Siglo de Oro. Adem\u00e1s de numerosos art\u00edculos, es autor de <i>The Half-way House of Fiction:<\/i> Don Quixote <i>and Arthurian Romance <\/i>(Oxford University Press, 1984), traducido al espa\u00f1ol con pr\u00f3logo de Mario Vargas Llosa (Taurus, 1991); <i>The Penguin History of Latin America<\/i> (2009), que ha sido traducido al espa\u00f1ol (Fondo de Cultura Econ\u00f3mica, 2014) y al portugu\u00e9s; y de la biograf\u00eda <i>Borges: A Life <\/i>(2004), tambi\u00e9n publicado por Penguin, que ha sido traducido a espa\u00f1ol (Seix Barral, 2006) y a otras seis lenguas. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford, Cornell and the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, as well as lecturing widely in Spain, Latin America, the USA, and Europe. His teaching and publications reflect his interest in both Latin America and early-modern Spain. In addition to numerous articles, he is the author of <i>The Half-way House of Fiction:<\/i> Don Quixote <i>and Arthurian Romance <\/i>(Oxford University Press, 1984), translated into Spanish with a\u00a0 prologue by Mario Vargas Llosa; <i>The Penguin History of Latin America<\/i> (2009), which has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese, and the biography, <i>Borges: A Life <\/i>(2004), also published by Penguin, which has been translated into Spanish and six languages.
