{"id":820,"date":"2010-07-19T14:41:41","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T14:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/institutocervanteslondon.wordpress.com\/?p=820"},"modified":"2010-07-19T14:41:41","modified_gmt":"2010-07-19T14:41:41","slug":"fifties-flamenco-on-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/2010\/07\/19\/fifties-flamenco-on-film\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifties flamenco on film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Flamenco Spanish Steps\" href=\"http:\/\/londonspanish.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/17\/fifties-flamenco-on-film\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/londonspanish.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/spanish-steps-film-1.jpg?w=491&amp;h=327\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"182\" \/><\/span><\/a><strong><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">FLAMENCO<\/span><\/strong> can be enjoyed in London most nights of the week, and is probably Spain\u2019s most successful cultural export.<\/p>\n<p>Its popularity was shown once again this week when the <a title=\"Instituto Cervantes in London\" href=\"http:\/\/www.londres.cervantes.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instituto Cervantes London<\/a> was inundated with requests for places at a special preview screening of the film <em>Spanish Steps: Flamenco in a Foreign Land<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This documentary\u00a0pays homage to the pioneer flamencos who staged shows in London\u2019s bars\u00a0and restaurants from the 1950s onwards, paving the way for artists and aficionados alike to enjoy the thriving flamenco scene that is now so firmly established here.<\/p>\n<p>These pioneers included both British amateurs and\u00a0Spanish migrants escaping life under Franco, and many of the events were informal affairs, often in the basements of unglamorous Soho bars.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays flamenco is taken more seriously by London\u2019s cultural establishment, with the annual festival at <a title=\"Sadler's Wells\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sadlerswells.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sadler\u2019s Wells<\/a> and frequent events at other leading venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, as well as more informal concerts such as the monthly <a title=\"Espa\u00f1a on Fire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ronniesbar.co.uk\/events\/espana-on-fire-l6-all-night-2\" target=\"_blank\">Espa\u00f1a on Fire<\/a> at Ronnie\u2019s Bar, upstairs at the famous Ronnie Scott\u2019s.
