Both institutions understand languages as\nspaces for cultural dialogue and as a link between civilisations. Democracy is\ndefended through words.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Director of the Instituto Cervantes, Luis Garc\u00eda Montero, was accompanied by the institution\u2019s Director of Cabinet, Mart\u00edn L\u00f3pez-Vega, Director of International Relations, Rafael Soriano, Academic Director, Carmen Pastor, Deputy Director of Culture, Raquel Caleya, and the Directors of the London and Manchester-Leeds centres, Ignacio Peyr\u00f3 and Francisco Oda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Council was represented by Chief Executive Ciar\u00e1n Devane, their Director in Spain, Mark Howard, HR Director Talent and Development, Louisa Bench, Regional Manager MENA, EU Europe and Wider Europe, Francis Gardener-Trejo, Regional Head, EU Europe, Wider Europe and Americas, Charlie Walker, Global Head of Content, Laura Clohessy, and Learning and Development and Talent Consultant Arts, Nathan Carroll. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Spanish and\nBritish delegations emphasised that Spanish and English are \u2018complementary, not\ncompeting\u2019 in their constant growth as languages of international communication;\nthey also emphasised the importance of spreading the values of Spanish- and\nEnglish-speaking communities in the global context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9623\" width=\"473\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.cervantes.es\/londres\/files\/2020\/02\/ERx8rFSXUAA-UA8.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spanish and English: the world\u2019s most\nwidely spoken and studied languages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, British Council Chief\nExecutive Ciar\u00e1n Devane said that \u2018there are 860\nmillion English speakers and 570 million Spanish speakers globally. Both the\nBritish Council and the Cervantes Institute work through culture and education\nto improve understanding and encourage open, inclusive conversation between these languages. This closer partnership between our two\norganisations will help to build stronger, lasting connections among people all\nover the world.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leaders of both institutions also agreed to promote\nlanguage teaching and learning as part of the response to the challenges of\nglobalisation. The two institutions award more than 4 million certificates between\nthem each year, and one of their principle areas of academic co-operation will centre on language certification\nprocesses, with special emphases on the possibilities of digital certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, there will be a\nprogramme of short-term secondments between the two institutions in the first\nhalf of 2020, with the aim of collaborating on best practice in the recruitment\nand training of new teachers. To this end, a meeting of British\npublishers is being scheduled for later in the year in Madrid. On the agenda\nwill be mechanisms for greater inclusion of the immense wealth of hispanophone\nliterature in UK bookshops.
