Nos alegra contarles que este mes de abril el IC de Mánchester ha preparado un interesante programa cultural en el que destaca el concierto Molinos de Cuerda: La música en tiempos de Cervantes del próximo día 23, en colaboración con el Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). El propio Miguel de Cervantes además de escritor era músico, capaz de tocar la vihuela y cantar. Esto queda reflejado en el personaje de Don Quijote; si bien existe cierta confusión al respecto, pues en algún capítulo éste pide para tocar no una vihuela sino un laúd, otro instrumento común en el tiempo de la novela.

Tras una investigación, los estudiantes del RNCM de Mánchester han adaptado algunas de las piezas de la época para guitarra. Los estudiantes que participarán en este concierto son: Sam Rodwell, Owen Bunting, Richard Haslam, Bradley Johnson, James Girling, Jamie MacRae e Yvonne Bloor.

A través de este concierto, conmemoramos el 400 aniversario de la publicación de la segunda parte de El ingenioso caballero don Quijote de la Mancha, publicada a finales de 1615.

We are happy to let you know that this very month of April Manchester’s Instituto Cervantes has organised a very interesting programme, where we highlight the concert named Mill Of Strings: Music In Cervantes Times on the 23rd, in collaboration with the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

Miguel de Cervantes himself was known as a musician besides as a writer, as he was able to play vihuela and sing. This is reflected on the character of Don Quixote. There is some kind of confusion about it though, as at some chapter Don Quixote asks for a lute to play instead of a vihuela. The lute was also a common instrument at the time of the novel.

Students at RNCM in Manchester have made a research so as to adapt several pieces of that time to guitar. Students performing in this concert are: Sam Rodwell, Owen Bunting, Richard Haslam, Bradley Johnson, James Girling, Jamie MacRae and Yvonne Bloor.

With this concert, we would like to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the publication of the second part of the extraordinary work by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, published towards the end of 1615.

El Instituto Cervantes de Manchester acoge desde el 20 de marzo al 8 de mayo una exposición única. Descubriendo la Invisibilidad se compone de 22 fotografías que muestran las vidas y experiencias de diversos miembros de la comunidad latinoamericana en el Reino Unido. La exposición está teniendo una gran acogida por parte del público, quienes se acercan a descubrir las historias que esconde cada fotografía.

El acto de inauguración se celebró el pasado 20 de marzo, donde asistieron a la presentación los mismos fotógrafos, Roxana y Pablo Allison, así como la doctora Cathy Mcilwaine de la Queen Mary University of London, cuyo informe No Longer Invisible ha servido como inspiración para este proyecto, la doctora Catherine Davies de la University of Nottingham y asimismo participaron en el coloquio la doctora Parvathi Kumaraswami de la Universidad de Manchester y Laura Carletti, quien acudió para presentar la innovadora tecnología NFC, gracias a la cual se pueden escuchar los testimonios de los fotografiados mediante nuestros propios smartphones.

Este próximo jueves 10 de abril a las 18:30h continuamos con otra conferencia en torno a la exposición. En esta ocasión, Claudio Chipana, miembro de LARC (Latin American Recognition Campaign) y Maria Canizales Jerez, de Latin Support Group parte de Migrants Supporting Migrants,  compartirán con nosotros su punto de vista y conocimientos sobre la materia. La entrada es libre, por lo que estáis todo el que se quiera acercar esta invitado.

The Instituto Cervantes has become home to a unique exhibition, Uncovering the Invisible, a series of 22 photographs documenting the lives and experiences of members of the Latin American community living here in the UK. Every day visitors come to see the exhibition, and discover the stories behind each photograph.

We celebrated the opening of the exhibition on the 20th of March, where we were joined by the photographers, Roxana and Pablo Allison themselves, as well as Professor Cathy Mcilwaine from Queen Mary University of London, on whose academic research, No Longer Invisible, the series is based. Professor Catherine Davies from the University of Nottingham was also here to discuss about the subject of the identity and recognition of Latin America communities throughout the UK. Professor Parvathi Kumaraswami from the University of Manchester and Laura Carletti, from the University of Nottingham, also participated in the talk. Laura Carletti also introduced the audience to NFC technology, through which everyone with a smartphone is able to listen to the testimonies of the subjects from the pictures.

Nuestros amigos de la Universidad de Leeds han invitado a la escritora, cineasta y guionista Ángeles González-Sinde, que presentará su último libro El buen hijo (2013) finalista del premio Planeta. La ex ministra de Cultura y ex presidenta de la Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España ofrecerá una conferencia acerca de su polifacética carrera y su trabajo como escritora. Después leerá varios extractos de El buen hijo.

El acto se celebrará el martes,18 de marzo a las 5.30pm en la Biblioteca Central de Leeds, en el salón de actos de la 3ª planta. La entrada es libre.

Our friends at the University of Leeds have invited the writer, filmmaker and scripwriter Ángeles González-Sinde who will talk about her book El buen hijo / The good son (2013), which was the runner-up for the prestigious Planeta book prize. The Spain’s former Minister of Culture and President of the National Film Academy will talk about her multifaceted career and literary craft, and she will read some choice passages from El buen hijo.

 The will take place on Tuesday, 20th of March, at Leeds Central Library, 3rd floor meeting room. Admission is free.

El invierno nos trae días cortos, fríos y con mucha lluvia y además parece que esta situación dura eternamente, dejándonos el ánimo algo bajo. Así que desde el Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester hemos decidido hacer algo para remediar esto, y os proponemos una serie de actividades que seguro harán más cálido y llevaderos estos meses.

Para aquellos que tengan una cierta inquietud a la hora de escribir,  os ofrecemos un taller de escritura donde realizar diferentes ejercicios de estilo,  expresar opiniones y aportar ideas sobre los trabajos elaborados en clase. (+)

Dentro del mundo de las palabras, otro taller girará en torno a los aspectos más interesantes y creativos de la traducción, donde con textos en inglés y español los participantes serán invitados a explorar sus propios recursos e intereses mediante la elaboración de diversos ejercicios. (+)

En un par de días os contaremos más remedios para el invierno, mientras, estaremos encantados de recibir los vuestros.

Winter brings sort, cold and rainy days making us feeling the Winter blues, so from Instituto Cervantes we have decided to do something about it and sort out the blues. We are proposing several activities that surely will warm up the British winter.

For those who have some kind of writing curiosity, we are pleased to offer you a creative writing workshop where different styles of exercises will be performed and participants will be able to express their views and give ideas about their works. (+)

Continuing in the world of words, there is another workshop which revolve around the most interesting and creative questions about translation. The participants will be encouraged to explore their own interests as translators practising with several exercises based on Spanish and English texts. (+)

 We will return in a couple of days with more tips for the winter.
