El universo (que otros llaman la Biblioteca) se componte de un n\u00famero indefinido, y tal vez infinito, de galer\u00edas hexagonales, con vastos pozos de ventilaci\u00f3n en el medio, cercados por barandas baj\u00edsimas. Desde cualquier hex\u00e1gono se ven los pisos inferiores y superiores: interminablemente. La distribuci\u00f3n de las galer\u00edas es invariable. Veinte anaqueles, a cinco largos anaqueles por lado, cubren todos los lados menos dos; su altura, que es la de los pisos, excede apenas la de un bibliotecario normal. Una de las caras libres da a un angosto zagu\u00e1n, que desemboca en otra galer\u00eda, id\u00e9ntica a la primera y a todas. A izquierda y a derecha del zagu\u00e1n hay dos gabinetes min\u00fasculos. Uno permite dormir de pie; otro, satisfacer las necesidades finales. Por ah\u00ed pasa la escalera espiral, que se abisma y se eleva hacia lo remoto. En el zagu\u00e1n hay un espejo, que fielmente duplica las apariencias. Los hombres suelen inferir de ese espejo que la Biblioteca no es infinita (si lo fuera realmente \u00bfa qu\u00e9 esa duplicaci\u00f3n ilusoria?); yo prefiero so\u00f1ar que las superficies bru\u00f1idas figuran y prometen el infinito\u2026 La luz procede de unas frutas esf\u00e9ricas que llevan el nombre de l\u00e1mparas. Hay dos en cada hex\u00e1gono: transversales. La luz que emiten es insuficiente, incesante.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The universe (which others call the Library) is composed of an indefinite and perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries, with vast air shafts between, surrounded by very low railings. From any of the hexagons one can see, interminably, the upper and lower floors. The distribution of the galleries is invariable. Twenty shelves, five long shelves per side, cover all the sides except two; their height, which is the distance from floor to ceiling, scarcely exceeds that of a normal bookcase. One of the free sides leads to a narrow hallway which opens onto another gallery, identical to the first and to all the rest. To the left and right of the hallway there are two very small closets. In the first, one may sleep standing up; in the other, satisfy one’s fecal necessities. Also through here passes a spiral stairway, which sinks abysmally and soars upwards to remote distances. In the hallway there is a mirror which faithfully duplicates all appearances. Men usually infer from this mirror that the Library is not infinite (if it were, why this illusory duplication?); I prefer to dream that its polished surfaces represent and promise the infinite … Light is provided by some spherical fruit which bear the name of lamps. There are two, transversally placed, in each hexagon. The light they emit is insufficient, incessant.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
