Nueva York ha sido siempre una ciudad que ha inspirado a escritores, artistas, músicos y cineastas. Una ciudad donde da la sensación que todo ocurre. 

La primera vez que fuimos nos sorprendió. Más allá de la ciudad que nos muestran las películas encontramos muchas NY diferentes, lo que nos incitó a plasmar nuestra visión de la ciudad en papel.

Durante estas tres visitas a NY realizadas en tres años consecutivos, con estancias de 1 y 2 meses, cada uno desarrollamos dos proyectos: “I believe in NY” y “Seen in NY”  (Iratxe López de Munáin y Miguel Pang Ly)

New York has always been a city that has inspired writers, artists, musicians & moviemakers. A city where one that has the sensation to be in the place where everything is happenning.

The first time we visited the city it surprised us. Along with the city that is shown in the films, we found many different New York´s, that made us want to capture our own vision of it on paper.

During our three  visits to NY donde in the consecutive years, with stays around 1 & 2 months, each of us devoloped two projects: “I believe in NY” & “Seen in NY”  (Iratxe López de Munáin y Miguel Pang Ly)

Eduardo Humberto del Río García  caricaturista, más conocido como Rius, falleció recientemente en Morelos a los 83 años. Según el diario mexicano El Insurgente, Rius «será recordado por su irreverencia y audacia al utilizar la caricatura como la mejor herramienta para criticar a la política y la sociedad mexicana.» En la biblioteca hemos hecho una exposición en homenaje a Rius. Le invitamos a consultar las obras expuestas a través del catálogo.

Eduardo Humberto del Río García, caricaturist, better known by his pen name Rius, died recently in Morelos at age 83. According to the Mexican newspaper El Insurgente, Rius «will be remembered for his irreverence and daring to use caricature as the best tool to criticize Mexican politics and society.»
In our library we have made an exhibition in homage to Rius. You can see the works exhibited by searching the catalog.

Félix Lope de Vega Carpio (1562-1635) fue uno de los más importantes poetas y dramaturgos del Siglo de Oro español y uno de los más prolíficos autores de la literatura universal. Lope encabezó junto a su eterno rival el cordobés Luis de Góngora una precoz generación poética que se da a conocer en la década que va de 1580 a 1590; son los llamados «poetas romancistas». Estaba convencido de la necesidad de presentar historias que fueran realistas y donde se entremezclara lo cómico y lo trágico, tal y como ocurre en la vida real.

Tesoros escondidos en la biblioteca

Esta exposición quiere mostraros la riqueza de los documentos de la Biblioteca del Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York, a través de los ojos de la artista Vanesa Albertos e invitaros a que os aventuréis a explorar la biblioteca en busca de tesoros escondidos.

Este proyecto bimensual mostrará, durante un año, diferentes piezas de joyería inspiradas en los materiales que puedes encontrar en la biblioteca. Al finalizar el año organizaremos una exposición con todas las piezas y documentos presentados.

Cada objeto ha sido realizado en exclusiva por Vanesa Albertos, profesora del Instituto Cervantes que, además de ser Licenciada en Filología Hispánica, ha estudiado escultura en metal en Art Students League y ampliado sus conocimientos de orfebrería en escuelas privadas como 92Y en Nueva York.

Hidden Jewels in the Library / Lope’s necklace

Félix Lope de Vega Carpio (1562-1635) was one of the most important poets and playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age and one of the most prolific authors of universal literature. Lope headed next to its eternal rival the cordovan Luis de Góngora  an early poetic generation that is made known in the decade that goes from 1580 to 1590; the so-called «novelist poets». He was convinced of the need to present stories that were realistic and where the comic and the tragic were intertwined, as in real life.

This exhibition aims to show you the richness of the holdings at the  Cervantes Institute of New York Library’s through the eyes of artist Vanesa Albertos. We hope that this project will invite you to explore the library in search of its hidden treasures. At the end of the year an exhibition will showcase all the pieces and documents.

The bi-monthly project will show over the course of a year different jewelry pieces inspired in the items that you can find in our Library.

Each object has been designed and handcrafted especially by our teacher at Instituto Cervantes Vanesa Albertos, that in addition to her bachelor in Hispanic Studies has training in metal sculpture by the Art Students League and in goldsmithing by private schools like 92Y in New York.

Durante el XXVI Simposio de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil, hemos celebrado por primera vez una Feria del Libro en la que han participado 12 editores y distribuidores especializados: Apila, Ekaré, Grupo SM, Flamboyant, Lectorum, NubeOcho, Spanish Publishers, LLC (Urano, Obelisco, Sirio, Roca, Ediciones B, Anagrama, Edaf, Salamandra) Santillana USA Publishing, Toon Books and The Bilingual Publications Co.

Al finalizar la feria, los participantes nos han ofrecido una selección de libros en donación para la biblioteca. Estos libros ya están catalogados y a vuestra disposición. Aquí os dejamos esta lista con las novedades que también podéis consultar a través del catálogo.

During the XXVI Symposium on Children’s and Young Adult’s Literature, we held for the first time a Book Fair with the participation of 12 specialized publishers and distributors:  Apila, Ekaré, Grupo SM, Flamboyant, Lectorum, NubeOcho, Spanish Publishers, LLC (Urano, Obelisco, Sirio, Roca, Ediciones B, Anagrama, Edaf, Salamandra) Santillana USA Publishing, Toon Books and The Bilingual Publications Co.

At the end of the fair, the participants offered us a selection of books in donation for the library. These books are already cataloged and at your disposal. Here we offer you this list with the new arrivals which you can also consult through the catalog.

Este año nuestro invitado especial es el escritor Alejandro Palomas, ganador del Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2016 por su libro Un hijo. Otros participantes son: Edu Flores (illustrador de Apila Ediciones); Eva Jiménez (Editorial Flamboyant); María Ahmad y Paz V. de Troya (Instituto Cervantes). Este Simposio está abierto a los maestros del Estado y la Ciudad de Nueva York.

Children’s and Young Adult Book Fair at the Instituto Cervantes

The Book Fair is open to the public. Registration is not required.

The Children’s and Young Adult Book Fair is a parallel event to the XXVI Symposium on Children and Young Adult Literature. This year our special guest is Alejandro Palomas, the winner of the 2016 National Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature for his book Un hijo. Other participants include Edu Flores (illustrator at Apila Ediciones); Eva Jiménez (Editorial Flamboyant); María Ahmad and Paz V. de Troya (Instituto Cervantes). This Symposium is open to K-12 teachers of the State and the City of New York.
