El próximo lunes 18 de junio, 2018, el New York Library Club visitará la Biblioteca Jorge Luis Borges del  Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York en donde celebrará su Annual Business Meeting,

Su fundación en junio de 1885 por Melvil Dewey y once bibliotecarios del área metropolitana de Nueva York,  respondía a la necesidad de un foro de reunión informal para bibliotecarios y personas interesadas en las bibliotecas y su fundación es considerada como el punto de partida de la profesionalización de la biblioteconomía.

Next Monday, June 18, 2018, the New York Library Club will visit the Jorge Luis Borges Library at the Cervantes Institute in New York where it will hold its Annual Business Meeting,

Its founding in June of 1885 by Melvil Dewey and eleven librarians of the New York metropolitan area, responded to the need for an informal meeting forum for librarians and people interested in libraries and its foundation is considered as the starting point of professionalization of librarianship.

En esta edición nos han acompañado la escritora gallega Ledicia Costas (Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2015) e Iván Cortázar (artista de cuentos).
Gracias a los departamentos de Educación del Estado y de la Ciudad de NY, a la Universidad Fordham, y a la Agregaduría de Educación del Consulado de España NY, que con su apoyo y colaboración han hecho posible la celebración de esta actividad!

This year’s symposium featured presentations by the Galician author Ledicia Costa (Winner of the 2015 National Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature) and the cinematographer Iván Cortázar.

Special thanks to the Departments of Education of New York City and New York State, Fordham University and the Education Office of The Consulate of Spain in New York whose support and collaboration made this activity possible.

El universo (que otros llaman la Biblioteca) se componte de un número indefinido, y tal vez infinito, de galerías hexagonales, con vastos pozos de ventilación en el medio, cercados por barandas bajísimas. Desde cualquier hexágono se ven los pisos inferiores y superiores: interminablemente. La distribución de las galerías es invariable. Veinte anaqueles, a cinco largos anaqueles por lado, cubren todos los lados menos dos; su altura, que es la de los pisos, excede apenas la de un bibliotecario normal. Una de las caras libres da a un angosto zaguán, que desemboca en otra galería, idéntica a la primera y a todas. A izquierda y a derecha del zaguán hay dos gabinetes minúsculos. Uno permite dormir de pie; otro, satisfacer las necesidades finales. Por ahí pasa la escalera espiral, que se abisma y se eleva hacia lo remoto. En el zaguán hay un espejo, que fielmente duplica las apariencias. Los hombres suelen inferir de ese espejo que la Biblioteca no es infinita (si lo fuera realmente ¿a qué esa duplicación ilusoria?); yo prefiero soñar que las superficies bruñidas figuran y prometen el infinito… La luz procede de unas frutas esféricas que llevan el nombre de lámparas. Hay dos en cada hexágono: transversales. La luz que emiten es insuficiente, incesante.

The universe (which others call the Library) is composed of an indefinite and perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries, with vast air shafts between, surrounded by very low railings. From any of the hexagons one can see, interminably, the upper and lower floors. The distribution of the galleries is invariable. Twenty shelves, five long shelves per side, cover all the sides except two; their height, which is the distance from floor to ceiling, scarcely exceeds that of a normal bookcase. One of the free sides leads to a narrow hallway which opens onto another gallery, identical to the first and to all the rest. To the left and right of the hallway there are two very small closets. In the first, one may sleep standing up; in the other, satisfy one’s fecal necessities. Also through here passes a spiral stairway, which sinks abysmally and soars upwards to remote distances. In the hallway there is a mirror which faithfully duplicates all appearances. Men usually infer from this mirror that the Library is not infinite (if it were, why this illusory duplication?); I prefer to dream that its polished surfaces represent and promise the infinite … Light is provided by some spherical fruit which bear the name of lamps. There are two, transversally placed, in each hexagon. The light they emit is insufficient, incessant.

Este viernes 22 de noviembre se celebra en el Instituto Cervantes Nueva York, la reunión de otoño 2013 de LANE (Latin America North East Libraries Consortium), Asociación de las Bibliotecas del Nordeste de los USA, Consorcio de bibliotecas universitarias, científicas y especializadas que poseen importantes secciones de fondos bibliográficos y audiovisuales de la lengua española.

En el ICNY se reunirán los bibliotecarios de LANE para desarrollar e intercambiar opiniones sobre temas de máxima actualidad que influyen directamente en el trabajo diario de nuestras bibliotecas.

La orden del día prevista será la siguiente:

• Scholarly Communication/ Open Access. From Fall 2012 agenda.
• Iberoamericana Vervuert / Iberbook Sanchez Cuesta non-merger/legal issues — resulting approval plan problems, etc.
• LANE Brazil collecting project update.

• Grant writing for Area Studies librarians workshop.
• Ventana al Pasado NY State Archive project. From Fall 2012 agenda.
• Información Sistemática database history and current hosting needs.
• Interlibrary loan of videos.

This Friday November 22nd Instituto Cervantes New York hosts the 2013 Fall meeting of LANE (Latin America North East Libraries Consortium), a group of academic and research libraries in the northeastern United States committed to building and maintaining Latin American studies collections.

The meeting, gathers LANE librarians to discuss and exchange ideas about subjects of utmost interest and current relevance that directly influence our work as librarians. 

The agenda of this meeting will focus on the following subjects:

• Scholarly Communication/ Open Access. From Fall 2012 agenda.
• Iberoamericana Vervuert / Iberbook Sanchez Cuesta non-merger/legal issues — resulting approval plan problems, etc.
