Tesoros escondidos en la Biblioteca quiere mostrar la riqueza de los documentos de la Biblioteca del Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York a través de los ojos de la artista Vanesa Albertos, e invitaros a explorar la biblioteca en busca de tesoros escondidos.

Este proyecto bimensual mostrará, durante un año, diferentes piezas de joyería inspiradas en los materiales que puedes encontrar en la biblioteca. Al finalizar el año organizaremos una exposición con todas las piezas y documentos presentados.

Cada objeto ha sido realizado en  exclusiva por Vanesa Albertos, profesora del Instituto Cervantes que, además de ser Licenciada en Filología  Hispánica, ha estudiado escultura en metal en Art Students League y ampliado sus conocimientos de orfebrería en escuelas privadas como 92Y en Nueva York.

Las joyas que exponemos estos dos meses están inspiradas en Ágora, la película dirigida por Alejandro Amenábar: tres piezas únicas, dos brazaletes y un collar, realizadas a mano, que son una libre interpretación de los objetos personales que pudieron pertenecer a la astrónoma Hipatia.

Alejandría era un crisol en el que se fundían las culturas egipcia, griega y romana. Sin embargo, esta mezcla cultural estalló en el 391 d.C. con un conflicto entre religiones. Alejandro Amenábar se inspiró en este periodo para contarnos la historia de la filósofa-matemática Hipatia, condenada a ser lapidada por bruja y pagana.

Hidden Jewels in the Library aims to show you the richness of the holdings at the  Cervantes Institute of New York Library’s through the eyes of artist Vanesa Albertos. We hope that this project will invite you to explore the library in search of its hidden treasures. At the end of the year an exhibition will showcase all the pieces and documents.

This bi-monthly project will show over the course of a year different jewelry pieces inspired in the items that you can find in our Library. Each object has been designed and handcrafted especially by our teacher at Instituto Cervantes Vanesa Albertos, that in addition to her bachelor in Hispanic Studies has training in metal sculpture by the Art Students League and in goldsmithing by private schools like 92Y in New York.

The jewels we exhibit these two months are inspired by Agora, the film directed by Alejandro Amenábar: three unique three pieces, two bracelets and a necklace, made by hand, are a free interpretation of personal objects that could belong to the astronomer Hypatia.

Alexandria was a melting pot of Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. However, this cultural mix resulted in religious conflict in 391 A.D.  Film director Alejandro Amenabar was inspired by this period to tell the story of the philosopher-mathematician Hipatia, who was accused of being a pagan witch and condemned to be stoned.
