As every year, PhotoIreland and Instituto Cervantes bring you a new exhibition. This time you can enjoy We make the path by walking by artist Paul Gaffney. You can visit the exhibition from July 10th to July 30th. The opening hours are : Mon- Thur 12 am-7pm and Fri 10am-2pm.

Over the past year Paul Gaffney has walked over 3,500 kilometres throughout Spain, Portugal and the south of France, with the aim of creating a body of work which explores the idea of walking as a form of meditation. His intention has been to create a series of quiet, meditative images, which would evoke the experience of being immersed in nature and capture the essence of the journey. The images seek to engage the viewer in this walk, and to communicate a sense of the subtle internal and psychological changes which one may undergo while negotiating the landscape.

Paul Gaffney is a Dublin-based artist who has recently completed an MFA in Photography at the University of Ulster in Belfast. His project ‘We Make the Path by Walking’ has been shortlisted for the European Publishers Award for Photography 2013, and also won the Johnsons-Photopia prize at this year’s Format Festival in Derby, England. His work has been exhibited in numerous locations throughout Ireland and the UK, including the Gallery of Photography, Cambridge University, Host Gallery (London) and Third Floor Gallery (Cardiff).

Como todos los años, PhotoIreland y el Instituto Cervantes te traen una nueva exposición. Esta vez puedes disfrutar de Se hace camino al andar del artista Paul Gaffney. La exposición tendrá lugar entre el 10 y el 30 de julio y las horas de visita son lunes a jueves de 12:00 a 19:00 y los viernes de 10:00 a 14:00.

Durante el último año Paul Gaffney ha recorrido más de 3.500 km por España, Portugal y el sur de Francia con el propósito de captar imágenes y momentos que exploren la noción de caminar como vía de meditación. Su intención ha sido crear una serie de imágenes serenas y meditativas que evoquen la experiencia de sentirse inmerso en el entorno y que capturen la esencia del viaje. Las imágenes pretenden hacer partícipe al espectador de este recorrido y reflejar los posibles y sutiles cambios, íntimos y psicológicos, que se viven al atravesar los parajes naturales que le rodean.

Paul Gaffney es un artista afincado en Dublín que ha terminado recientemente un Máster en Bellas Artes en fotografía de la Universidad de Úlster, Belfast. Su proyecto We Make the Path by Walking (Se hace camino al andar) ha sido nominado para el premio EPAP 2013 (European Publishers Award for Photography), y ha sido galardonado con el premio Johnsons-Photopia del Festival Format de Derby, Inglaterra, de este año. Su trabajo se ha expuesto en numerosas localidades de Irlanda y Reino Unido, incluidas la Gallery of Photography, (Universidad de Cambridge), la Host Gallery (Londres) y la Third Floor Gallery (Cardiff).

El pasado 31 de agosto despedimos la exposición de PhotoIreland «El otro lado del alma» que nos acompañó en el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín durante cerca de dos meses. En esta entrevista, el comisario de esta exposición, Moritz Neumüller, nos explica los orígenes y los motivos de esta iniciativa.

En «El otro lado del alma» nos encontramos con una serie de fotógrafos contemporáneos cubanos que investigan la temática religiosa y en concreto las religiones sincretistas con raíces en los cultos africanos importadas a la isla hace cientos de años por esclavos, desde muy diferentes perspectivas, mostrando una interpretación individual sobre la memoria espiritual colectiva de la nación.

Aunque la fotografía y el videoarte cubano actual se mueven en la esfera de los movimientos internacionales, mucho de los artistas cubanos siguen mostrando en sus fotografías y en sus vídeos que la tradición cubana sigue estando profundamente arraigada en ellos. Así, en muchas de las obras que se producen actualmente podemos apreciar la influencia de una profunda temática cubana.

Last 31st August we said goodbye to the PhotoIreland exhibition “The other side of the soul”, which accompanied us in the Instituto Cervantes for about two months. In this video, Moritz Neumüller, curator of this exhibition, explained us the origins and reasons for this initiative.

This exhibition showcases various contemporary Cuban photographers who research religious themes and, specifically, syncretistic religions with roots in African cults that were imported in the island centuries ago by slaves. These photographers portray a personal interpretation of the collective spiritual memory of the nation from very different perspectives.

Although both Cuban photography and video art revolve around international movements, many Cuban artists still portray an ingrained Cuban tradition. We can therefore perceive a profound Cuban theme influence in many works produced at present.

Los participantes podrán llevar sus portafolios de fotografía para mostrar, compartir y conversar sobre todos aquellos aspectos que involucran la creación de un objeto artístico.

Nacido en México, Daniel Weinstock, actor y fotógrafo autodidacta, ha expuesto su obra en galerías de su país, de Los Ángeles y Nueva York. En Dublín, ofrecerá una muestra de su trabajo fotográfico recorriendo las diferentes etapas por las que ha atravesado.

Born in Mexico, Daniel Weinstock, actor, freelance and self-taught photographer, has exhibited in galleries in Mexico, Los Angeles and New York City. In Dublin he will offer a sample of his photographic work, covering the different stages he has undergone.

¿Podemos oler una palabra? ¿Se puede leer un sabor? ¿Es posible plasmar un aroma?

Yolanda Castaño y Andrea Costas son dos autoras gallegas que han descubierto que sí se puede, como demuestran en su proyecto “Cocinando al pie de la letra”. Las relaciones entre cocina, literatura y fotografía aparecen magistralmente plasmadas en el libro que recoge las conclusiones de este proyecto, y que comparte título con él.

Palabras, sabores e imágenes se fundirán con creatividad y originalidad en la exposición de las jóvenes autoras, que nos mostrarán los resultados de su trabajo esta tarde en la mesa redonda “Cocinando al pie de la letra”. Además tanto Yolanda (poeta, Premio Nacional de la Crítica 1999) como Andrea (artista plástica, diseñadora y fotógrafa) nos visitarán antes en la Biblioteca para atender al Encuentro Digital y responder vuestras preguntas.

Si queréis un buen consejo, no faltéis a esta cita con “El sabor de las palabras” hoy a las 6 de la tarde en el Café Literario. La conferencia, en español, tendrá traducción simultánea en inglés, y como introducción podéis disfrutar del sabor de un buen vino español a las 5.30.

¿Can we smell a word? ¿Are we able to read a taste? ¿Is it possible to capture a smell?

Yolanda Castaño and Andrea Costas are two Gallician authors who discovered that it’s possible, as they have proved in their project “Cooking by the book”. Relationships between cuisine, literature and photography are brilliantly expressed in the book containing the conclusions of the project, which share the name with it.

Words, flavours and images will be merged with creativity and originality in the presentation of these young authors. They will show us the results of their work this afternoon in the round table discussion “Cooking by the book“. Besides, both Yolanda (poet) and Andrea (photographer and designer) will visit us in the library in order to take part of the Virtual Interview and answer your questions.

If you want a piece of advice, don’t miss the meeting with “The taste of words” today at 6 p.m. at Café Literario. The conference will be in Spanish with English interpreting and you will be able to taste a Spanish glass of wine as introduction if you come at 5.30 pm.

Yolanda Castaño y Andrea Costas. Dos gallegas, la una escritora, la otra fotógrafa, a las que un día se les ocurrió mezclar sus dos artes y añadir como tercer ingrediente su pasión común por la gastronomía, para cocinar un libro muy original y apetitoso: “Cociñando ao pé da letra”.

Yolanda Castaño and Andrea Costas. Two Galician women, a writer and a photographer, who one day came out with the idea of mixing their two disciplines, adding their common love for cuisine as a third ingredient, and cooking a very original and appetizing book: “Cociñando ao pé da letra”.

Luis Ramón Marín, a figure now regarded as the world’s first photojournalist, is currently represented in the Instituto Cervantes Dublin by a handful of his most striking photographs.

His large body of work, including over 18,000 negatives, was hidden by his wife Eduarda Plá in a cavity behind her kitchen wall for several decades after the Spanish Civil War, for fear they would be destroyed due to their political content.
