Film screening and discussion: Other voices. A different outlook on autism | Proyección y charla: Otras voces.

autismoIvan Ruiz, psychoanalyst and psychologist in Barcelona, will be at the Institute Cervantes Dublin to present his film Other Voices. A different outlook on autism. Being also an artist, photography and music are used in a unique way in the realisation of this film. The event will be at 6.30 in Café Literario.

Other Voices is a documentary based on the testimony of Albert, a 21-year-old young man, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. His thoughts inside a maze, the conversations he has with a friend from his town and a trip to Brussels visiting the Tintin Museum bring us closer to his particular way of living and understanding the world.

The world of autism, approached from the perspectives of subjectivity, singularity and respect, is reflected in and reflected on through the testimonies of parents, grand-parents and psychoanalysts. A different view on autism that offers insight into the multiplicity of possible ways of being and surviving in the world. A song of dignity and, arguably, a question of civilization.

After the screening (English subtitles) there will be time for debate and dialogue with the audience.

Film screening | Cine: El cielo gira

el cielo giraThe last session of the film series Feminine Space brings us the poetic film El cielo gira by Mercedes Álvarez. Don’t miss the screening tomorrow at 6pm in Café Literario.

Located in the most depopulated area of  Europe, the province of Soria, where more than 75% of the population is over 75 years old, in the village of Aldeaseñor, there are 14 inhabitants; the youngest is 48 years old, the oldest a woman born in 1900. They are the last generation after an uninterrupted history of more than eight centuries. Nothing now can change the ticking away of time in this world which is folding in upon itself. Nowadays life continues.

In a short time it will die out without a sound and without witnesses. For the visitor this landscape of moors and pine woods has been kept strangely intact and virginal without traces of the passing of time. This world forms part of the personal and artistic interests of the 48 year old painter, Pello Azketa who comes to the village along with his wife with the intention of renting a house and spending a short time there.

de_tu_ventana_a_la_mia

The new session of Feminine Space, a film series with a particular focus on women, comes today at 6pm to Café Literario. The film is De tu ventana a la mía by Paula Ortiz.

Violet, Inés and Louise are women of different ages, whose days pass in apparent calmness on the other side of the window. Wheatfields, mountains, and the streets of an old city provide settings in which De tu ventana a la mía recreates these women’s lives, as seen through the light and the beauty of memories.

The film gives us the magical past when it was still possible for a young girl to dream in the woods; it gives us, the distant gaze of a mother in the arid desert and the autumnal memory of a mature woman in a closed house. It tells the tale of women who seem to live in silence, but who have memories that keep secrets, passions, and dreams alive.

tres_dias_con_la_familiaThe second movie of the Feminine Space film series is Tres días con la familia by the talented Mar Coll. Enjoy this film today at 6pm in our cosy Café Literario.

Lea suddenly has to travel to Girona, where her paternal grandfather has just passed on. Awaiting her there is her family, whom she has not seen virtually since she went away to live abroad. Inundating the three days of ceremonies, between the wake, the mass and the funeral, are bits of nostalgia from the past and the sadness that death typically leaves behind in its path.

It is also a good time to dismantle that game of façades of a bourgeoisie in decline. Lea rejects a hypocritical world that seems to cling to her skin like a custom-made suit.

tambien_la_lluviaToday we start a new film series: Feminine Space and the opening film is También la lluvia by renowned director Icíar Bollaín. We highly recommend you to enjoy this thought-provoking film today at 6pm in Café Literario.

Obsessive idealist Sebastian has sworn to direct a film about one of the world’s most iconic figures, Christopher Columbus. But not for him the lie of a genius hero on a divine mission to win “souls for Christ”. Sebastian is determined to overturn the myth of the arrival of Western Civilization in the Americas as a force for good.

His film will show what Columbus set in motion: the obsession with gold, the taking of slaves, and the terrible violence visited on those Indians who fought back. The brilliant actor playing Columbus constantly challenges the director, accusing him of hypocrisy and cheap manipulation.

Costa, Sebastian’s friend and producer doesn’t give a damn. All that matters is that the film comes in on time and within budget. Costa has a crazy plan. Despite Sebastian’s fury, they will shoot in Bolivia, the cheapest, most “Indian” of  Latin American countries. While the shoot progresses in and around the city of  Cochabamba, civil and political unrest simmer, as the entire water supply of the city is privatized and sold to a British/American multinational.

Violence increases daily until the entire city explodes in the now infamous Bolivian Water War – a war which actually took place in April 2000. 500 years after Columbus, sticks and stones once again confront the high-tech weaponry of a modern army. David against Goliath. Only this time the fight is not over gold, but the simplest of lifegiving elements – water.

dias_de_futbolToday is the last session of the 10 years entertaining through laughter, singing, dancing and…football film series. You still have the chance to taste the very best of Spanish cinema with the comedy Football Days. The film is at 6pm at Café Literario and  the producer Tomás Cimadevilla will be with us to explain all the ins and outs of the film.

Jorge is thirty and thinks his life can’t possibly get any worse. He finds his work depressing and his girlfriend leaves him when he asks her to marry him. But things can always get worse and to see the truth in this he only has to look at his friends. Ramón can’t decide what gets at him most; his wives crazy ideas or his lost battle against baldness. Gonzalo has been studying law for as long as he’s been looking for a girlfriend. Carlos hopes to become an important actor but has got no further than a minor part in the teleshop. Miguel is a policeman and the father of a family but his dream is to be a singersongwriter; that is if his wife lets him. The only one who seems to have his life under control is Antonio but this doesn’t mean much as he has just come out of prison. The brilliant solution for changing their lives is to set up the football team they had in their youth and finally win something in life even if it’s only the Football 7 trophy.

2.5 million spectators watched this movie in cinemas.

dias_de_cine_difusionDias de cine is the comedy that you cannot miss today at 6pm at Café Literario. Once again Tomás Cimadevilla, producer of the film will be with us to tell us all the secrets of the film.

A comedy set in 1977 in which a prestigious, anti-francoist playwright tries to film a drama of social condemnation starring a downcast folksinger who was a former child prodigy. A lying producer with a lot of cheek produces the film. Inexperience, ambition, the lack of means and the director’s love-hate relationship with the star mean the shooting descends into madness.
