If you want to enjoy a good Spanish comedy, just come to the Institute today and enjoy the film Friend Zone. The film is part of the 10 years entertaining through laughter, singing, dancing and… football series. The screening will be on Tuesday at 6pm in Café Literario and Tomás Cimadevilla, producer of the film will be with us for Q&A.

Chema has chucked his long-standing girlfriend because he’s sure he can aspire to something better but for the moment he hasn’t been too lucky in his nighttime skirmishes. So when he meets Claudia he thinks his luck has changed. She’s good fun, really hot and what’s more important she seems to be interested in him. The problem arises when it becomes clear that Claudia does love Chema, she loves him very, very much … but “as a friend”. So Chema has to decide: either not to bother about a girl who he’s got absolutely no chances with or lie in wait and be on the lookout for the first chance he gets to make a pass at her.

Si quieres disfrutar de una buena comedia española, ven esta tarde al Instituto y disfruta de la película Pagafantas. La película es parte del ciclo 10 años haciendo reir, cantar, bailar y… jugar al fútbol. La proyección será el martes a las 18:00 en el Café Literario y Tomás Cimadevilla, productor de la película estará con nosotros presentando la película.

En ese momento Chema tendrá que decidir: o pasar de una chica con la que no tiene ninguna posibilidad o esperar agazapado y estar alerta a la primera oportunidad que surja para entrarle a Claudia.

Acércate a descubrir la literatura europea contemporánea a través del trabajo de destacados autores de diferentes países europeos, leídos en inglés por celebridades irlandesas en lugares inusuales alrededor de St. Stephens Green. Paséate de un lugar al siguiente y disfruta de lecturas de 15 minutos de duración, que tendrán lugar cada 30 minutos de 18:30h a 21:00.

El Instituto Cervantes te invita a asistir a la lectura, por parte del presentador de TV irlandés Mark Cagney, de un fragmento de la obra La flaqueza del bolchevique (The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik), de Lorenzo Silva, en el edificio histórico Newman House, sede de la primera universidad católica de Irlanda.

Lorenzo Silva (Madrid, 1966) ha escrito, entre otras, las novelas La flaqueza del Bolchevique (finalista del Premio Nadal 1997) que ha sido llevada al cine por Manuel Martín Cuenca, y Carta blanca (Premio Primavera 2004). Ha publicado también libros infantiles y juveniles, además de ensayos. Es especialmente conocido por la serie policiaca protagonizada por los investigadores Bevilacqua y Chamorro. En 2012 le fue concedido el Premio Planeta de Novela a su último trabajo, La Marca del meridiano. Su obra ha sido traducida a numerosos idiomas, como ruso, francés, alemán, italiano y griego. La flaqueza del bolchevique saldrá publicado en inglés en 2013 bajo el título The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik (Hispabooks Publishing).

Try a taste of contemporary European literature as outstanding writers from different European countries are read in English by Irish celebrities in unusual venues around St. Stephens Green. Go from venue to venue and enjoy readings of 15 minute duration which will be held every half hour from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

Instituto Cervantes invites you to attend the reading of a passage from The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik (La Flaqueza del Bolchevique) by Lorenzo Silva, in voice of Irish TV presenter Mark Cagney, at the historic building of Newman House, home of the first Catholic University inIreland.

Lorenzo Silva (Madrid, Spain, 1966) is author of novels such as La Flaqueza del Bolchevique which was shortlisted for the Nadal Award in 1997, and adapted for the cinema by Manuel Martín Cuenca, and Carta Blanca which won the Primavera Award in 2004. He has also published books for children and young adults, as well as essays. He is specially known for the crime series starring detectives Bevilacqua and Chamorro. In 2012, he was awarded the Spain’s Literary Planeta Prize for his last book, La Marca del meridiano. His books have been translated into numerous languages such as Russian, French, German, Italian and Greek. The English translation of La flaqueza del bolchevique, “The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik”, will be released in 2013 by Hispabooks Publishing.

La España Celta llega a Irlanda. Este año, Dublín acoge un variopinto programa de actividades que dan a conocer lo mejor de Galicia y su legado celta a través de su gastronomía, moda, cultura y turismo. Desde catas de vino hasta una conferencia sobre moda, el Instituto Cervantes, la Oficina Comercial de la Embajada de España y la Oficina de Turismo te invitan a un apasionante viaje cuyo destino final es el Camino de Santiago.

La primera de las actividades programadas es hoy en el Café Literario a la 13:oo pm. La célebre periodista gastronómica británica Claudia Roden  presentará su libro Food of Spain (Penguin Books) y conducirá al público irlandés a través de los secretos y placeres de la comida gallega, desde los mariscos hasta la tarta de Santiago.

Claudia Roden nació y se crió en El Cairo. Tras finalizar sus estudios en París se trasladó a Londres para estudiar arte. Con la publicación de su best seller A book of Middle Easter Food revolucionó la actitud del mundo occidental hacia las comida de Oriente Medio. Ha publicado otros diez libros, entre ellos el clásico The book of Jewish Food, con los que ha obtenido numerosos premios.

Se ofrecerá un aperitivo de productos gallegos por cortesía de: Martin Codax, Vitivinícola do Ribeiro SCG, Portomuinos, San Simón DOP,Arzúa DOP.

Celtic Spain comes to Ireland. This year, Dublin will host a wide range of events all highlighting the best of Galicia and its Celtic ancestry through their food, wine, fashion, culture and tourism. From wine tastings to a fashion talk, Instituto Cervantes, the Trade Section of the Spanish Embassy and the Tourism Office gives you every reason to join us on a very interesting journey to the final destination at St. James Way.

The first of this series of events  will be today at 1pm at Café Literario. The coveted British food writer, author of the book The Food of  Spain (PenguinBooks), will lead an Irish audience on the secrets and pleasures of the Galician food, from seafood to St James’s cake.

Claudia Roden was born and brought up in Cairo. She finished her education in Paris and later studied art in London. With the publication of her bestselling A book of Middle Easter Food in 1968, she revolutionized Western attitudes to the cuisines of the Middle East. She as written ten other books, which have won her many awards, including the classic The Book of Jewish Food.

Galician refreshments will be served compliment of: Martin Codax, Vitivinícola do Ribeiro SCG, Portomuinos, San Simón DOP,Arzúa DOP.

Si hoy quieres escuchar buena música no tienes más que venir esta tarde al concierto que el coro de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid nos ofrece a las 7.30pm en el Café Literario.

El Coro de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid comienza su andadura en noviembre de 1990. La dirección musical corre a cargo de Nuria S. Fernández Herranz, y la gestión y coordinación de Félix Márquez.

A lo largo de su historia, ha colaborado en la recuperación del Patrimonio Musical Español con la interpretación de obras de Jaume Casellas (1690-1764) y Antonio Soler (1729-1783), y ha estrenado numerosas obras de compositores contemporáneos españoles como Javier Busto, Alicia Santos, Asís Márquez y Albert Alcaraz. El Coro UC3M ha realizado giras por Portugal, Holanda, Cuba y Hungría. Ha obtenido diversos galardones en concursos nacionales entre los que cabe destacar su reciente Premio “Ciudad de Torrevieja 2012” en el Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonía de dicha localidad.

En 2012 presenta una ecléctica selección de programas entre los que destacan Dixit Dominus yCoronation Anthems de Haendel, la Misa de Coronación de Mozart y el espectáculo escénico-coral EnAmorArte de Lorca basado en textos del autor granadino puestos en música por compositores españoles contemporáneos.

En estos días, el Coro se encuentra en Dublín realizando un Taller de  Interpretación con el director y compositor Michael McGlynn. No queríamos dejar pasar la ocasión de mostrar parte de la creación musical para coro de compositores españoles y, por ello, les ofrecemos este concierto dedicado a la música española.

If you want to listen to some good music you can enjoy today a concert by the Choir from the Carlos III University of Madrid. This event will be at 7.30pm at Café Literario.

The Choir from the Carlos III University of Madrid was set up in November 1990. Nuria S. Fernández Herranz is in charge of their musical direction, while Félix Márquez is responsible for their management.

Throughout its career, the choir´s interpretation of the works of Jaume Casellas (1690-1764) and Antonio Soler (1729-1783) has contributed to the preservation of Spanish musical heritage, and it has showcased numerous works of contemporary Spanish composers such as Javier Busto, Alicia Santos, Asís Márquez y Albert Alcaraz. The UC3M choir has toured Portugal, Holland, Cuba and Hungry and has received numerous awards in national competitions. The most outstanding award they have received to date is the recent honour, ‘City of Torrevieja 2012’, in the International Competition of Habaneras and Polifany.

In 2012 the choir presented an eclectic range of programs, most notably Dixit Dominus and Handel´s Coronation Anthems, The Coronation Mass by Mozart and the spectacular choral performance EnAmorArte de Lorca, based on texts by the author from Granada, set to music by contemporary Spanish composers.

The choir is currently in Dublin taking part in a performance workshop with the director and composer Michael McGlynn. To mark this occasion and demonstrate the musical achievements of Spanish choral composers, we invite you to attend a concert dedicated to Spanish music by the UC3M choir.

Esta tarde podrás disfrutar a partir de las 18:30 en el Café Literario de la charla Don Guillén de Lampart o “El Zorro” en México. Contaremos con la inestimable colaboración una vez más de la Embajada de México en Irlanda.

Don Guillén de Lampart (William Lamport o Guillermo Lombardo, 1611-1659), originario de Wexford, Irlanda, fue un teólogo, matemático, astrólogo, rebelde, pirata, soldado del Imperio español y espía de la Corona en la Nueva España (hoy México). Encarcelado por la Inquisición a partir de 1642, fue en la cárcel defensor de los judíos y denunció a sus captores y verdugos. Logró huir de prisión en 1650 y denunció a la Inquisición en varios puntos centrales de la ciudad de México, incluida la cámara del virrey. Murió en la hoguera, a pesar de que el propio rey de España intentó numerosas veces arrancarlo de las garras del Santo Oficio. Por su osadía y varias leyendas atadas a su nombre, se dice que es él quien da origen a “El Zorro”, emblemática y legendaria figura, inspiradora de mitos, novelas y películas.

Andrea Martínez Baracs es mexicana, Doctora en Historia por El Colegio de México. Se especializó en etnohistoria virreinal (siglos XVI-XVIII) y escribió siete libros, de manera individual o junto a otros autores, sobre la provincia indígena de Tlaxcala, México, durante esos siglos. Realizó otras obras de historia, como el “Repertorio de Cuernavaca” (Editorial Clío, 2011). Dirige desde noviembre 2008 para Conaculta la Biblioteca Digital Mexicana, la cual publica documentos históricos que se caracterizan por su rareza y unicidad. Su obra, “Don Guillén de Lampart, Hijo de sus Hazañas”, incluye manuscritos originales del propio Lampart, nunca antes publicados, contribuyendo sustancialmente de esta manera a la investigación sobre este personaje histórico.

Don Guillén de Lampart (William Lamport or Guillermo Lombardo, 1611-1659), originally from Wexford in Ireland, was a theologian, mathematician, astrologist, rebel, pirate, soldier of the Spanish Empire and a spy for the Crown of the New Spain (Mexico today). Imprisoned by the Inquisition in 1642, while in jail he was a defender of the Jews and denounced their captors and torturers. He managed to escape from prison in 1650 and denounced the Inquisition in various parts of Mexico City including the Viceroy’s Chamber. He died on the Stake despite various attempts by the King of Spain to grab him from the clutches of the Inquisition. For his audacity and the several legends associated with his name, they say that it was he who gave rise to “El Zorro”, emblematic and legendary figure who inspired myths, novels and films.

Andrea Martinez Baracs is Mexican, and has a PhD in History from El Colegio de México. She specialized in Mexican Colonial History (centuries XVI-XVIII) and wrote, alone or with other scholars, seven books on the Indigenous province of Tlaxcala, Mexico, in those centuries. She has done other historical books, like the “Repertoire of Cuernavaca”.  Since 2008 she is the Director of the Mexican Digital Library, which publishes rare historical documents. Her work, “Don Guillén de Lampart, Son of his Own Exploits”, includes original writings by Lampart, never before published, and so is a substantial contribution to the research about this historical figure.

Banda formada en el trascurso del año 2012. Vienen desde Santiago de Compostela a presentar su nuevo trabajo. Sus influencias van desde el blues más clásico de artistas como Howlin Wolf, Muddy waters, Hound Dog Taylor hasta el soul de Aretha Franklin, Etta James o Sam Cooke, pasando por elcountry de Johnny Cash. Sin olvidar a los grandes clásicos del rock y el rock and roll como Bob dylan, los Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley o Neil young del que toman prestado el psicodélico Down by the river. Otras de sus potentes influencias son dos de los nuevos talentos del rockabilly y el rock & roll actual, considerados ya clásicos modernos, Imelda May y los tres hermanos que forman Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. A pesar de ser un grupo influenciado sobre todo por la música americana, también abordan clásicos en castellano como el famoso Chan chan, La Paloma o La Llorona de la gran Chavela Vargas.

Café Literario will be full of  good music today as the band The Lákazans are visiting us with the best of its repertoire. The concert will start at 7.30pm and the entrance is free although donatiosn will be accepted.

Formed in 2012, the band from Santiago de Compostela  has come to perform their new music. Their influences range from classic blues artists such as Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Hound Dog Taylor, to the soul music of Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Sam Cooke, and the country sound of Johnny Cash. Not forgetting the great classic rock and roll music of the likes of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Neil Young, from whom they borrowed the psychedelic song Down by the River. Other strong influences come from two major new talents of rockabilly and contemporary rock and roll, already considered to be modern classics – Imelda May and the three brothers that make up the group Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. Besides being a group influenced by American music, they also take inspiration from classic Spanish artists like the famous Chan Chan, and particularly the songs Paloma Negra (Black Dove) and La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) from the great Chavela Vargas.

El ciclo de cine chileno continua esta tarde a las 18:00 con la proyección de una nueva película, Teresa, dirigida por Tatiana Gaviola.

Teresa Wilms Montt, talentosa, atormentada y bella. Casada a los 17 años, pese a la oposición familiar, al poco tiempo se enamora de quien no debe. El castigo que recibe es el encierro en el convento de la Preciosa Sangre. Separada definitivamente de sus dos hijas se escapa a Buenos Aires con Vicente Huidobro. Desde ese momento su vida se transforma en un apasionante y trágico itinerario.

The new Chilean film series brings you a new film today at 6pm. The film is Teresa by Tatiana Gaviola.

Teresa Wilms Montt is a talented, tormented and beautiful woman. She married at 17 despite family opposition and soon falls for the wrong kind. She is sent to The Convent of the Precious Blood as punishment and is separated from her two daughters. She finally escapes to Buenos Aires with Chilean poet and writer Vicente Huidobro. From that moment on her life becomes an exciting and tragic journey.

Esta tarde y con la inestimable cooperación de la Embajada de México os ofrecemos una interesante charla sobre el papel de la lengua materna en la vida de aquellas personas que por una circunstancia u otra viven en otro país. Te esperamos a las 18:30 en el Café Literario.

Al vivir lejos de la tierra materna, algunas palabras de nuestro idioma nos generan emociones de nostalgia, cariño o cercanía. Con conceptos psicológicos, filosóficos y semánticos, la conferencia versará sobre el lenguaje materno hablado a la distancia. Inspirada en el proyecto “El jardín de nuestra lengua”, la plática tiene como objetivo reflexionar en la cualidad emocional de las palabras del idioma materno cuando se vive fuera, así como revelar las posibilidades de su uso a través de tecnologías como “skype”. Con este fin, Helen Blejerman revelará estadísticas, hará preguntas al público y quizá también, si la memoria ayuda, contará historias.

Helen Blejerman es escritora y artista. Nació en la Ciudad de México y vive en el Reino Unido desde el año 2006. Después de exhibir sus proyectos artísticos nacional e internacionalmente, su práctica viajó orgánicamente hacia la literatura y la radio. Helen escribe cuento corto y lo publica con editoriales Mexicanas. Además escribe proyectos que en su fase final son series radiofónicas. También es una invitada frecuente en la BBC Radio de Sheffield. Su trabajo explora en general, nociones de hogar y distancia, y en particular, la manera en que las palabras del idioma materno detonan sensaciones de pertenencia y cierran el espacio entre la persona que vive fuera y su tierra. Helen es catedrática asociada en el Departamento de Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Sheffield Hallam.

This evening we offer you a talk with the invaluable cooperation of the Embassy of Mexico in Ireland. It is about the role of  mother tongue for people living in another country due to different circumstances. We hope to see you today at 6.30pm in the Café Literario.

When living far away from homeland, some words of our language provoke strong emotions of nostalgia, affection or closeness. Using psychological, philosophical and semantic concepts, the conference will focus on maternal language spoken from abroad. Inspired by the project “Our Language Garden” the objective of the talk is to reflect on theemotional quality of words in the native tongue when living abroad, and also to reveal the possibilities of their use through technologies like “skype”. To this end, Helen Blejerman will reveal statistics, will ask the audience questions and perhaps, if memory permits, tell stories.

Helen Blejerman is a writer and artist. She was born in Mexico City and she has been based in the UK since 2006. After exhibiting her art projects nationally and internationally her practice travelled organically into writing and radio. Helen writes and publishes short stories for Mexican publishers and writes and devises projects that in the final stage become radio shows. Helen is also a frequent guest at BBC Radio Sheffield. Her work explores in general, notions of home and distance, and in particular, she is interested in researching the way in which certain words trigger strong feelings of belonging, closing the emotional gap between the person abroad and their homeland. Helen is an associate lecturer in the Department of Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.

Al final de los años 80, el joven músico Gastón Fernández (Luciano Cruz-Coke) tenía por delante un futuro brillante, junto a su grupo de amigos soñadores e idealistas. Quince años después, el destino los ha separado. Gastón regresa a Chile, y se enfrenta a un país distinto y a la frustración del éxito artístico que nunca llegó. Mientras sus amigos disfrutan de la prosperidad, los recuerdos lo atormentan. Obligado por las circunstancias, Gastón deberá transar trabajando en la corredora de propiedades de su padre, iniciando así un viaje donde conocerá a Elisa (Francisca Lewin) y entenderá la vida, sin el peso del pasado.

Después de la proyección tendrá lugar un cóctel inaugural, por cortesía de la Embajada de Chile en Irlanda.

You cannot miss the opening session of the 3rd Chilean Cinema Season. We will screen the film Se arrienda by filmmaker Alberto Fuguet at 6pm at Café Literario.

At the end of the 80’s, the young musician Gastón Fernández (Luciano Cruz-Coke) had a brilliant future ahead with his dreaming and idealist friends. Fifteen years later, destiny separated them. Gaston returns to Chile carrying the frustration of an artistic success that never materialized and finds a changed country. While his friends enjoy a prosperous life, memories haunt him. Life pressures lead Gaston to work in his father´s estate agency. It is in his workplace that he embarks on a journey that will lead him to Elisa (Francisca Lewin) and to an understanding of the meaning of life without the weight of the past.

Followed by a wine reception, compliment of the Embassy of  Chile in Ireland.

Tras años de investigación sobre la música y tradiciones españolas, el desarrollo de una interpretación de música de siempre va tomando forma y el sonido de España emana de las seis cuerdas de un instrumento que describe el alma española. Angel presenta la música de algunos de los grandes compositores españoles como Enrique Granados, Joaquín Malats, Francisco Tárrega, Manuel de Falla e Isaac Albéniz en este concierto dedicado a la guitarra española.

Las representaciones de Angel han tenido gran aceptación en la comunidad artística y público general irlandeses y europeos. Los amantes de la cultura española lo sitúan en un lugar privilegiado por su interpretación personal de la música española. Su técnica embellece su música con la impresionante expresividad de su repertorio y conciencia lírica.

Through many years of research into Spanish music and traditions, the development of an interpretation into old favourites has taken shape little by little and the sounds of Spain flows from the six strings of the instrument that describes the soul of Spain. Angel presents the music of some of the greatest Spanish composers like Enrique Granados, Joaquín Malats, Francisco Tárrega, Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albéniz in
this concert dedicated to La Guitarra Española.

Angel’s performances have had a great impact on general audiences and on the artistic community in Ireland and Europe alike. His interpretations of Spanish music make him a preferred choice for audiences captivated by the Spanish culture. His powerful expressive range and his lyrical awareness are remarkable.

Nuestro ciclo de cine de jóvenes realizadores españoles ha reservado una de sus sesiones a los más pequeños.  Mañana sábado, a las 12:15,  proyectamos Nocturna, dirigida por Adriá García y Víctor Maldonado.

Un súbito apagón de estrellas amenaza con dejar la noche sumida en la más profunda oscuridad. Tim, un niño asustadizo que vive en un orfanato, se llenará de valor para resolver este desastre enfrentándose a su propia sombra, fruto de sus miedos. Para conseguirlo se sumergirá en una emocionante aventura a través de Nocturna, un mundo paralelo que surge cada noche cuando nos quedamos dormidos. Allí descubrirá a todos los seres y criaturas que hacen que la noche sea más o menos apacible, y con quienes emprenderá un fabuloso viaje para intentar rescatar a su estrella querida: Adhara.

Our Young Filmmakers Series has one of its sessions dedicated to children. This Saturday morning we will screen at 12:15 pm the film Nocturna by Adriá García and Víctor Maldonado.

In the aging orphanage the days pass very uneventfully, but the nights are something quite different; at least for Tim they are. The light reflected from the stars is the only cure for his fear of the dark. One night this fear leads him to the orphanage rooftop. Where he discovers that his favourite star has disappeared, and unfortunately it’s not going to be the last one. Tim also discovers the Cat Shepherd and his faithful cat Tobermory, that will become Tim’s personal guardians. Tim convinces the Shepherd to take him to see Moka, the guardian of the night, and pleads for him to return the stars to the night sky.

Julio Nieves, un capataz de la construcción de 65 años, que ha vivido toda su vida solo en el madrileño barrio de Vallecas, se enfrenta, solo también, a su próxima jubilación. La vida de Nieves cambiará cuando reciba, como caída del cielo, una hija de 16 años que viene de Marsella, Francia. Pero ¿y si no es su hija? ¿y si Nieves la acoge como remedio a su soledad? ¿Hasta dónde somos capaces de llegar para no estar solos?
