Cine / Film screening: Yo bailé con Don Porfirio
Finalizamos hoy el ciclo “Grandes figuras del cine mexicano” con la proyección de “Yo bailé con Don Porfirio” en el Café Literario a las seis.
México a principios de siglo. Don Severo, su esposa y su hija Rosa llegan a la capital donde él tiene otra hija, Violeta, quien aspira a ser vedette. Ambas son idénticas y ese parecido provocará varios equívocos. Don Severo se encuentra con Porfirio, su amigo astrólogo, quien le presenta al coronel don Evaristo, el cual va a dar una fiesta para don Porfirio. El teatro Principal, la sociedad afrancesada y los duelos dan vida a esta comedia nostálgica.
Cine / Film screening: Ahí está el detalle
La comedia llega hoy al Café Literario con “Ahí está el detalle”. La película se proyectará a las seis dentro del ciclo “Grandes figuras del cine mexicano”.
En la película el novio de la sirvienta de un rico empresario tiene que entrar en la casa para matar un perro rabioso. La confusión entre el perro Bobby y un gángster del mismo nombre desencadena una serie de enredos entre un celoso marido, su nerviosa esposa, una pícara criada, una esposa abandonada con ocho hijos y el singular Cantinflas.
Comedy is coming today to our Cafe Literario with the film “Ahí está el detalle”. The screening is at 6pm as part of the film series “Great Figures of Mexican Cinema”. Cantinflas is the boyfriend of the servant of a rich industrial man, gets into the house in order to kill a mad dog. Suddenly this man appears so the servant tells him that Cantinflas is his wife’s brother, who had been lost for years. The rich man then remembers that his father in law’s testament could only be paid when all brothers get together, so treats Cantinflas, a real bum, as a king.
Exposición | Exhibition: Geografía postal. Las postales de las familias García Lorca y De los Ríos
Esta tarde a las seis inauguramos una nueva exposición: Geografía postal. La postales de las familias García Lorca y De los Ríos. Después tendremos el recital “Homenaje a Federico García Lorca” con la soprano Judith Mok y la pianista Dearbhla Collins.
¿Quién no ha escrito alguna vez una tarjeta postal? Ahora ya casi nadie envía o recibe postales. Todo esto ha sido sustituido por el correo electrónico o los mensajes de móviles que poco a poco han ido dejando en el olvido a las postales. Sin embargo, a comienzos del siglo pasado, las postales se utilizaban para enviar mensajes cortos a amigos o familiares. Este es el caso de Federico García Lorca y su familia.
En la primera mitad del siglo XX estas dos familias (García Lorca y De los Ríos), se enviaron postales casi todos los días, creando así una amplísima colección que el Instituto Cervantes te invita a conocer. Martin Parr, fotógrafo y especialista en postales, ha seleccionado las más importantes para esta exposición, que nos ayudará a adentrarnos en la faceta más íntima de la vida del poeta.
La exposición estará abierta del 20/09/2012 al 17/11/2012.

We open a new exhibition today at 6pm: “Postal Geography, García Lorca and De los Ríos families´postcards”. It will be followed by the recital “Tribute to Federico García Lorca” by soprano Judith Mok and pianist Dearbhla Collins.
Who hasn´t written a postcard? People hardly send or receive postcards nowadays. Emails and text messages have substituted them and have made them fall into oblivion. At the beginning of the previous century postcards were used to send brief messages to friends or family. In this case, the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca and his family.
In the first half of the 20th Century these two families, García Lorca and De los Ríos sent each other postcards almost daily. Martin Parr, photographer and a specialist in postcards has selected the most important ones for this exhibition. This display will bring us closer to the most intimate side of the poet´s life.
The exhibition will open fro the 20/09/2012 to 17/11/2012.

Film screening | Cine: Modisto de señoras
Una comedia ligera llega hoy a nuestro Café Literario a las 18:00. En Modisto de señoras, el sastre D’Maurice simula ser afeminado para encajar en el mundo de la alta costura y tomar ventaja de dicha apariencia para conquistar a todas sus clientas; burlándose así de todos los esposos de las mismas quienes confiadamente creen dejar a sus mujeres en buenas manos. La película forma parte del ciclo Grandes figuras del cine mexicano.
A funny film comes today to the Café Literario today at 6pm. In Modisto de señoras, a the susccessful fashion designer D’Maurice seduces married women while he pretends to be gay in order to avoid arousing suspicion among his clientele’s husbands. The film is part of the Great figures of Mexican Cinema series.
Federico García Lorca: nuestro autor del mes de septiembre
Desde el día 20 de este mes y hasta el 17 de noviembre contaremos en el Instituto con la exposición “Geografía postal. Las postales de las familias García Lorca y De los Ríos”.
En la biblioteca, aprovechamos esta ocasión para recordar al que en la actualidad es el poeta español más leído de todos los tiempos. Fundamental es también su figura en el teatro español contemporáneo. En 1915 comienza a estudiar Filosofía y Letras y Derecho en la Universidad de Granada. Formó parte de El Rinconcillo, centro de reunión de los artistas granadinos donde conoce a Manuel de Falla quien ejerció una gran influencia en él, transmitiéndole su amor por el folclore y lo popular.
A partir de 1919, se instaló en Madrid, en la Residencia de Estudiantes, donde conoció a Juan Ramón Jiménez y a Machado, y trabó amistad con poetas de su generación y artistas como Buñuel o Dalí. En este ambiente, Lorca se dedicó con pasión no sólo a la poesía, sino también a la música y el dibujo, y empezó a interesarse por el teatro.
From the 20th of this month until the 17th of November, you can enjoy at the Institute the exhibition “Postal Geography. García Lorca and De los Ríos Families´s Postcards”.
At the library, we take the chance to remember the most read Spanish poet of all times. He is also an essential part of contemporary Spanish theatre. He started to study Philosophy and Literature and also took Law studies at the University of Granada. He was part of El Rinconcillo, a meeting point for the artists of Granada where he met Manuel de Falla who was a big influence, learning from him about folk and tradition .
In 1919 he moved to Madrid and lived in the Residence for Students, where he met Juan Ramón Jiménez and Machado and he became good friend of poets and artists of his generation such as Buñuel or Dalí. Lorca worked with passion in that environment in poems and also in music, drawing and he started to be interested in theatre.
Luis Alegre y David Trueba en el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín
Luis Alegre y David Trueba nos concedieron una entrevista el pasado mes de mayo. Los dos participaron en el homenaje a Félix Romeo celebrado en el centro. Un día después, se proyectó el documental La silla de Fernando, dirigido por ellos, para dar a conocer la figura de Fernando Fernán-Gómez, intelectual clave del siglo XX español: actor, escritor y director de cine, teatro y televisión. Sobre estos y otros temas hablaron con nuestra compañera Carmen Sanjulián.
Luis Alegre (Lechago, Teruel, 1962) polifacético escritor, periodista, cineasta, y presentador de televisión, ha recibido múltiples reconocimientos por su carrera.
David Trueba (Madrid, 1969) es uno de los jóvenes talentos del cine español que ha trabajado también como actor, guionista, escritor y periodista.
David Trueba and Luis Alegre uncover Fernando Fernán-Gómez, an outstanding character who enriched Spanish culture with his work: actor, writer and television, theatre and cinema director. Fernán-Gómez is a giant of the Spanish 20th Century and an essential figure in Spain’s cultural heritage.
Luis Alegre (Lechago, Teruel, 1962) is a versatile writer, journalist, film maker and television presenter. He has received various awards in recognition of his invaluable contribution to Spanish cinema.
David Trueba (Madrid, 1969) is one of the young talents of Spanish cinema. He has also worked as an actor, script writer, writer and journalist.
Cine | Film screening: Salve Melilla + La boda de Mawla
Hoy finaliza el ciclo de cine Los límites de la frontera en colaboración con PhotoIreland. Os ofrecemos dos documentales que no os podéis perder. En Salve Melilla, Carlos Rubiales se convierte, un año más, en el hombre de la Semana Santa. El presentador del programa religioso es el Cruz de guía que la televisión de Melilla pone en antena con motivo de la fiesta religiosa.
La boda de Mawla cuenta la historia de Mawla, que es de Bangladesh y vive en Madrid. Tiene trabajo y muchos amigos, pero su sueño es formar una familia. Después de siete años decide volver por primera vez a su país, con el fin de encontrar novia y casarse.

In Salve Melilla, Easter arrives at Mellilla. Carlos Rubiales becomes, another year, Easter man. He is the presenter of the religious programme Cruz de Guía (Guiding Cross) that Melilla’s Television broadcasts.
La boda de Mawla is about a young man from Bangladesh living inMadrid (Spain). He has a job and plenty of friends but his dream is to have a family. For the first time after seven years he decides to return to his country in search of a bride to get married.

Charla | Lecture: El mariachi: cultura popular mexicana, Patrimonio de la Humanidad
¿Quién no ha escuchado a un mariachi? Ya sea en en vivo, en disco, en la radio o en películas, indudablemente la música
de mariachi es la más representativa de la música tradicional mexicana, e incuestionablemente parte fundamental de la cultura de México. No hay ninguna otra expresión musical mexicana más difundida en el mundo que la del mariachi.
Originaria del estado de Jalisco, en el occidente de México, la música de mariachi fue distinguida en el 2011 por la UNESCO como patrimonio intangible de la humanidad. Conocedor del tema, el Secretario de Cultura del Gobierno de Jalisco, Jesús Alejandro Cravioto, ofrecerá un panorama sobre el significado del mariachi, compañero de vida de los mexicanos, ya que está siempre presente, desde el bautizo hasta el entierro, como lo describió recientemente en medios periodísticos. Who has not heard a Mariachi? Whether live, on records, on the radio or in the movies, the Mariachi music undoubtedly is the most representative of traditional Mexican music, and unquestionably a fundamental part of the culture of Mexico. No other Mexican musical expression is more widespread in the world than the Mariachi music.
Born in the state of Jalisco, in Western Mexico, the Mariachi music was honored in 2011 by the UNESCO, the United Nations cultural organization, as intangible cultural heritage of mankind. Knowledgeable on the subject, the Secretary of Culture of the Government of the State of Jalisco, Jesus Alejandro Cravioto, will provide an overview of the meaning of the Mariachi, a life partner of Mexicans, “since it is always present, from the baptism to burial,” as he described it recently in the media. Cine documental hoy a las seis en el Café Literario. Os ofrecemos un programa doble con las proyecciones de Día noche y En la línea dentro del ciclo de cine Los límites de la frontera en cooperación con PhotoIreland.
Dia noche ocurre un sábado cualquiera en el sur de California. Adam, un norteamericano de clase media-baja, se despide de su mujer e hijos para acometer su tarea semanal. Un cometido que entraña sacrificios pero que él desempeña con la sólida convicción de sus ideales.
En la línea oscila entre el vértigo que moldea el día y la noche en la capital china seguimos durante un año a un motero danés que sueña con abrir un bar rockabilly a orillas del lago Houhai, a una estudiante del norte del país que deambula entre dos modelos culturales, a un joven de Alaska que se esconde bajo la tierra de Pekín y a un periodista español empeñado en dar con la tecla que desenvuelva el misterio que le rodea. Su cotidianidad nos descubrirá una China corriente y cercana a trasmano del tópico.
Documentary cinema today at 6pm at Café Literario. There will be two films today: Day Night and On the line. They are part of The Limits of the Frontiers series in cooperation with PhotoIreland.
Day Night happens during an ordinary Saturday in Southern California. Adam, an American lower-middle class man, bids farewell to his wife and children to undertake his weekly chore. A task implying sacrifices, but that he accomplishes with the solid conviction of his ideals.
On the line tells the vertigo that shapes day and night in China’s capital, this documentary follows, over a year, the lives of a Danish biker who dreams of opening a rockabilly bar by Houhai Lake, a student from the North wandering between two cultural models, ayoung man from Alaska who hides underground inBeijing, and a Spanish journalist seeking to unravel the mystery that surrounds him. Their everyday lives reveal a China that, contrary to thecliché, is ordinary and close.

Diamond Inside narra el viaje a CapeTown del colectivo Boa Mistura donde entrarán en contacto con artistas y vecinos de los barrios marginales de la ciudad, como Khayelitsa o Woodstock, con el objetivo de pintar murales que inspiren un cambio en la comunidada través del arte. El documental recala las experiencias personales de varios habitantes que luchan para generar ese cambio entre la población más desfavorecida. Esta es la tercera sesión del ciclo Los límites de la frontera, en cooperación con PhotoIreland. La proyección es hoy a las seis en el Café Literario.
Diamond Inside is the journey of the B
oa Mistura collective to Cape Town. On their arrival they will meet artists and people from marginalised neighbourhoods in the city, such as Khayelitsa or Woodstok. Their goal is to draw murals that inspire change through art in the comunity. This documentary recounts personal experiences of various dwellers who struggle to generate that change amongst the most underpriviledged sector of the population. This is the third session of The Limits of Frontierscinema series that has been organized in cooperation with PhotoIreland. The screening is today at 6pm at Café Literario.
Concierto: Celebración de guitarra clásica española | Concert: A Celebration of Spanish Classical Guitar
Hoy tenemos a las 8 de la tarde un concierto muy especial en el Café Literario. Acércate a disfrutar del homenaje que el guitarrista Alan Grundy, especialista en la obra del músico español Andrés Segovia, ha preparado para conmemorar los 25 años de la muerte del maestro Andrés Segovia. Alan Grundy ofrecerá un concierto de guitarra clásica española con trabajos que abarcan desde el Renacimiento español hasta el presente.
Alan Grundy es un destacado guitarrista y profesor de guitarra. Ha ofrecido numerosos conciertos en Irlanda y en Europa. Destaca el concierto Ireland’s Tribute to Segovia, que tuvo lugar en la Hugh Lane Gallery para conmemorar el centenario del nacimiento del maestro español Andrés Segovia. Ha publicado dos CD: Premiere Recordings from the 19th and 20th Centuries y Dedications. Ha realizado también programas para la radio y la televisión (R.T.E.) además de los dos programas dedicados a la vida de Andrés Segovia en lyric FM.

Today we have a very special concert at 8pm at Café Literario. Join us to pay tribute and commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of the Spanish musician Andrés Segovia. Alan Grundy will offer a Spanish classical guitar concert spanning compositions from the Spanish Renaissance to the present day.
Alan Grundy is a renowned Irish guitar player and teacher. He has given numerous concerts around Ireland and Europe, most notably Ireland’s Tribute to Segovia that took place in Hugh Lane Gallery to commemorate the centenary of the maestro’s birth. He has released two CDs: Premiere Recordings from the 19th and 20th Centuries and Dedications. He has also produced programs for radio and RTE, further to two programs dedicated to the life of Andrés Segovia on Lyric FM.

Hoy os ofrecemos dos interesantes piezas del cine documental más actual en la segunda sesión del ciclo Los límites de
la frontera, en colaboración con PhotoIreland. No olvidéis que como siempre la proyección será a las 18:00 en el Café Literario.
Entre líneas ofrece una mirada única e íntima a la identidad australiana a través de los ojos críticos de un artista aborigen urbano. Adam Hill realiza un viaje en busca de su identidad a través de su arte, en una intensa trayectoria personal y artística. Adam se enfrenta a sus frustraciones y a su compromiso con su propia identidad aborigen y lucha contra las opiniones, no sólo de la sociedad que le rodea, sino también de la gente más cercana a él. Las contradicciones y frustraciones de Adam no son exclusivas de él o de los aborígenes o de los australianos, sino que son universales.
La necesidad y el derecho de pertenecer a un lugar y de definir la propia identidad es una lucha que se hace ahora más fuerte que nunca con los retos de la globalización. Las estructuras de poder imponen o niegan la identidad y este documental resalta esta lucha del individuo.

Between the lines offers a unique and intimate view of Australian identity through the critic eyes of an Aboriginal urban artist. Adam Hill embarks on an intense personal and artistic journey through his artwork in search of his identity. Adam faces his frustrations and his commitment with his own aboriginality and struggles with the opinions of both the society that surrounds him and of the people closest to him. Adam’s contradictions and frustrations are not exclusive to him, to the Aboriginal Australians or the Australians. They are universal. The yearning and the right to belong to a place and to define one’s own identity is a struggle made harder than ever with the challenges faced by globalisation. The structures of power impose or deny identity, and this documentary emphasises this individual’s struggle.

New Exhibition | Nueva exposición: El otro lado del alma
Por tercer año consecutivo, el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín participa en el Festival PhotoIreland. La edición 2012 lleva por título Migrations: Diaspora & Cultural Identity (Migraciones: Diáspora & Identidad cultural). Dentro de esta temática presentamos la exposición El otro lado del alma.
En El otro lado del alma nos encontramos con una serie de fotógrafos contemporáneos cubanos que investigan la temática religiosa y en concreto las religiones sincretistas con raíces en los cultos africanos importadas a la isla hace cientos de años por esclavos, desde muy diferentes perspectivas, mostrando una interpretación individual sobre la memoria espiritual colectiva de la nación.
Aunque la fotografía y el videoarte cubano actual se mueven en la esfera de los movimientos internacionales, mucho de los artistas cubanos siguen mostrando en sus fotografías y en sus vídeos que la tradición cubana sigue estando profundamente arraigada en ellos. Así, en muchas de las obras que se producen actualmente podemos apreciar la influencia de una profunda temática cubana.
La exposición estará abierta del 05/07/2012 al 31/08/2012.
El horario de visita es de lunes a jueves entre las 14:00 y las 19:00. Los viernes de 10:00 a 14:00. Cierra los sábados, domingos y bank holidays.
For the third consecutive year, Instituto Cervantes Dublin takes part in PhotoIreland Festival. The 2012 edition’s title is “Migrations: Diaspora & Cultural identity”.
In this context we introduce El otro lado del alma (The other side of the soul). This exhibition showcases various contemporary Cuban photographers who research religious themes and, specifically, syncretistic religions with roots in African cults that were imported in the island centuries ago by slaves. These photographers portray a personal interpretation of the collective spiritual memory of the nation from very different perspectives.
Although both Cuban photography and video art revolve around international movements, many Cuban artists still portray an ingrained Cuban tradition. We can therefore perceive a profound Cuban theme influence in many works produced at present.
The exhibition will be open from July 5th to 31st August 2012.

Esta tarde comienza el ciclo de cine Los límites de la frontera, organizado con PhotoIreland . Para la primera sesión
os hemos preparado un programa doble.
Primero se proyectará Distancias.
La historia: Un grupo de refugiados del Congo está bloqueado en Rabat. La frontera con España les impide cruzar a Europa. En una remota habitación en la periferia de la ciudad ensayan una pieza de teatro sobre su propia experiencia. Una obra imperfecta, inacabada. La vida real se confunde con su representación.
Entre ellos, Apollinaire cuenta, frontalmente, un eterno viaje de final incierto. Archivos televisivos muestran migrantes expulsados al desierto, obligados a empezar de nuevo. Rostros que han perdido sus nombres. Y detrás permanecen los espacios vacíos de lo sucedido. Huellas silenciosas que revelan su historia como nuestra.
Y seguidamente os ofrecemos En enero quizás.
La historia: Rumania ha entrado en la Unión Europea el 1 de enero de 2007. En la misma fecha se estableció una moratoria de dos años a la libre circulación de trabajadores procedentes de Rumania. En consecuencia de esta medida, hasta el 1 de enero de 2009, muchos rumanos que se encuentran en España no pueden trabajar por cuenta ajena pero tienen el derecho de residencia… Daniel es un rumano que intenta sobrevivir en las calles de Barcelona y aunque sin abrigo mantiene la esperanza que en enero de 2009 conseguirá encontrar un trabajo y reorganizar su vida.

This evening the new cinema series The limits of the frontiers starts. It is organized in cooperation with PhotoIreland. A group of refugees from Congo are stuck in Rabat. The Spanish borderline prevents them from entering Europe. In a remote room on the outskirts of the city they rehearse a theatre piece based on their own experiences. An imperfect, unfinished piece. Boundaries between real life and the stage are blurred.
First we will show Distancias.
The story: Apollinaire recounts, face to face, the never-ending journey with an uncertain conclusion. Television archive images show us emigrants forced into the desert to start their journey once more. Faces without a name. Left behind are the empty spaces of what has already happened. Silent tracks that reveal their story as our own.
The second screening is En enero quizás.
The story: When Romania joined the European Union on the 1st of January 2007, the Spanish government established a two-year moratorium to restrict freedom of movement for Romanian workers. Following this measure, many Romanians with residency status in Spain were prevented from working in Spain until the 1st of January 2009. Daniel is a homeless Romanian that struggles to survive in the streets of Barcelona and believes that he will find a job in January 2009 and change his life.
