Sara Baras, leyenda viva del mundo del flamenco, inauguró ayer una nueva edición del Flamenco Festival en el teatro Sadler’s Wells de Londres, con su espectáculo “Alma”, que representará hasta el próximo domingo.

Baras ha pasado los últimos 30 años construyendo una carrera internacionalmente elogiada como bailarina, directora y coreógrafa.

Ganadora del Premio Olivier 2020 a la Mejor Danza, así como de varios de los máximos galardones de la danza española, Baras infunde a las formas clásicas (sobre todo a la farruca) una poderosa sensibilidad moderna.

La española regresa a Londres por primera vez desde su aclamada obra de larga duración “Sombras” en 2019, Baras elabora una carta de amor a los orígenes del flamenco con Alma.

Mezclando elementos tradicionales del flamenco con ritmos de bolero, Baras y su compañía ofrecen una noche transformadora de zapateado propulsivo, formidable musicalidad y actuaciones inolvidables.

Sara Baras es una de las representantes de flamenco más conocidas en el mundo de hoy. Su carrera artística comenzó hace más de 30 años y la llevó a actuar en teatros de todo el mundo. En 1998 creó su propia compañía de baile, Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras.

Hasta la fecha, ha realizado 14 espectáculos, todos ellos creados y coreografiados por ella misma: ‘Sensaciones’ (Sensaciones); ‘Cádiz-La Isla’; ‘Sueños’ (Sueños); ‘Sueños de Sara’ (Sueños de Sara); ‘Juana la Loca’; ‘Mariana Pineda’; ‘Sabores’ (sabores); ‘Baras — Carreras’; ‘Carmen Esencia’ (esencia); ‘La Pepa’; ‘Medusa’, la guardiana; ‘Voces’; y su flamante especáculo ‘Sombras’ (Shadows).

Bajo el título Beyond the Spanish Golden Age (Más allá del Siglo de Oro español), cinco de las mejores agrupaciones y artistas españoles especializados en la interpretación del repertorio español antiguo y barroco desembarcarán en mayo de 2023 en el prestigioso Festival de Música Barroca de Londres, en la iglesia de St John’s Smith Square, y en el Centro Nacional para la Música Antigua de York. Estas formaciones y artistas de referencia son La Grande Chapelle (12 de mayo), Concerto 1700 (13 de mayo/ 14 de mayo en York), L’Apothéose (13 de mayo), José Miguel Moreno (14 de mayo) y Raquel Andueza y La Galanía  (14 de mayo/ 13 de mayo en York).

El objetivo de este proyecto es mostrar la riqueza, la singularidad y la calidad de nuestro patrimonio musical en dos espacios internacionales de renombre que son fundamentales para la promoción de la música española; así como apoyar a los intérpretes españoles, tendiendo puentes que les permitan establecer vínculos duraderos en el tiempo con estas ambiciosas programaciones. Además, la propuesta supone una gran oportunidad para compartir fuera de nuestras fronteras la personalidad única del repertorio español y descubrir joyas musicales de la mano de algunos de nuestros mejores intérpretes especialistas en este género, tanto en su faceta instrumental como vocal.

Esta coproducción internacional se realiza en el marco del Proyecto Europa, el Programa de Internacionalización de la Música y Artes Escénicas españolas, coorganizado por el Instituto Cervantes y el Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical, INAEM, Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte de España, y el Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia — financiado por la Unión Europea— Nextgeneration.eu. Cuenta con la colaboración de la Embajada de España en Reino Unido y la colaboración de Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), en el marco de la celebración del 10º aniversario de su programa PICE para la Internacionalización de la cultura española.

El cineclub virtual «Cita con el cine» comienza su programación de 2023 con Tótem loba, de Verónica Echegui.

La actriz y directora Verónica Echegui ganó el Premio Goya que otorga la Academia del cine español con este cortometraje basado en una experiencia real. Esta historia narrada en clave de thriller logra llevar este género a un terreno insospechado, con resultados inesperados.

Sinopsis: Estíbaliz acepta la invitación de su amiga del instituto, Raquel, a las fiestas de su pueblo. Lo que se presenta como un fin de semana divertido y excitante pronto se revela como una pesadilla, al descubrir Estíbaliz que en el pueblo de su amiga la tradición es que los hombres se disfracen de lobos y salgan a cazar a las mujeres durante la noche. Y lo que resulta más aterrador aún es que a nadie parece importarle ni alarmarle esta abominable costumbre.

La actividad está moderada por personal del Instituto Cervantes. Los encuentros, que tienen lugar en un chat en directo, cuentan con la participación de especialistas vinculados a la realización de la película (cineastas, guionistas…). ¡Disfruta del cine en español!

Federico García Lorca es el poeta español más más conocido y estudiado en el Reino Unido y, en general, en el mundo anglosajón. Por tal motivo, la biblioteca del Instituto Cervantes de Londres posee más de doscientos materiales sobre él o escritos por él. Para el rincón bibliográfico de este mes hemos realizado una selección de libros y otros materiales, fundamentalmente en inglés sobre su vida y su obra.

El Instituto Cervantes Londres amplía su programa de visitas guiadas, bajo el nombre “Rutas Cervantes”, invitando a recorrer la ruta de las reinas españolas en Londres y la ruta de las obras maestras del arte español en la National Gallery, sumándose así a los dos paseos ya existentes que rememoran los exilios españoles en Londres.

“Las rutas Cervantes por Londres permiten permeabilizar la acción cultural del Instituto Cervantes por la ciudad, unida por infinidad de vínculos comunes desde el nacimiento del Reino de España y el Reino Unido. No en vano, es la española en Londres, la primera embajada en el mundo”, explica el director del Instituto Cervantes de Londres, Víctor Ugarte, quien resalta “queremos que los londinenses conozcan estos vínculos”.

Las visitas guiadas cuentan con una guía de excepción, la española Milagros Dapena-Collopy (“Qualified Blue Badge London Tourist Guide”), quien descubre a los participantes las huellas de la presencia de las artes, la cultura, la literatura y la historia de España y Latinoamérica a través de sus personajes y figuras clave de todos los tiempos.

Ruta de las reinas españolas

En esta ruta tiene protagonismo la Abadía de Westminster, oficialmente la Colegiata de San Pedro en Westminster, el lugar donde se corona a los monarcas, donde un gran número de ellos están enterrados y por ser un mausoleo en el que están sepultados y conmemorados los personajes ilustres de la nación.

Desde la coronación de Guillermo el Conquistador en el 1066, todos los monarcas (con la excepción de dos) han seguido esta tradición. Algunos de los monarcas de sangre española no solo han sido coronados, sino que también están enterrados en este lugar que ocupa una posición única en la historia del Reino Unido.

El interior de la abadía y el paseo por sus alrededores nos recordará los enlaces históricos entre el reino de Castilla, el reino de España y el reino de Inglaterra.

Ruta de las obras maestras del arte español en la National Gallery

En este paseo caminaremos por los alrededores de la National Gallery para conocer los avatares de la historia que en el pasado unieron a las coronas de España e Inglaterra. A continuación, entraremos en la National Gallery. Aunque John Julius Angerstein y Sir George Beaumont sentaron las bases de la colección, otros legados y adquisiciones importantes han tenido una gran relevancia en su éxito. 

La colección de pintura española está considerada como una de las más importantes del mundo fuera de España. La mayoría de las piezas pertenecen al denominado Siglo de Oro español, periodo comprendido entre 1575 y 1700, y que fue testigo de un gran florecimiento artístico, con obras maestras de Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán, El Greco y Goya.

Ruta de los exilios españoles en Londres

Además, volvemos a repetir los itinerarios 1 y 2 de las ruta I de los exilios españoles en Londres, en las que se recuerda a los los protestantes, los liberales y los desterrados republicanos, para así poder conocer la presencia española en tierras británicas y agradecer su contribución a la cultura española y a la memoria de todos.

En el paseo del itinerario 1, nos adentraremos en lugares señeros de nuestros exiliados protestantes (S.XVI), liberales (S. XIX) y republicanos (S.XX).Manuel Chaves Nogales, Luis Gabriel Portillo, Josep Trueta, Esteban Salazar Chapela, Arturo Barea, Rafael Martínez Nadal y Antonio del Corro, entre otros. Seguimos sus huellas comenzando en el barrio intelectual de Bloomsbury, continuando por el barrio jurídico de Holborn y terminando en The Temple. En este paseo conoceremos dónde vivieron y trabajaron y sabremos de sus aportaciones  a la sociedad británica, especialmente durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

En el paseo del itinerario 2, nos centraremos en el Norte y Sur de Hyde Park. Conoceremos donde vivieron y trabajaron Rafael Martínez Nadal, Gregorio Prieto, Luis Cernuda y Arturo Duperier. En Bayswater, barrio residencial del Norte de Hyde Park se fundaron el Hogar Español y la Capellanía.Caminando a través de los jardines de Kensington encontraremos el vínculo entre la monarquía británica y la española, dándonos la oportunidad de hacer un repaso de la figura monárquica española previa a la proclamación de la Segunda República

En South Kensington, seguiremos ahondando en la memoria de nuestros exiliados, sin olvidarnos del lugar donde se fundó el Instituto Español en Londres, considerado como el dignísimo precursor de la red de sedes del Instituto Cervantes, bajo la dirección de un comité hispano-inglés.

The 10th Spring Weekend of the London Spanish Film Festival comes back, 28 – 30 May 2021, after missing one very strange year, full of energy and positive vibes setting the mood for an exciting 17th edition in September.

To celebrate Spanish cinema and its artists, as part of this weekend, you’ll find the latest film by veteran Fernando Trueba, three impressive debuts by three promising women, a hopeful and moving reflexion on what life is… and a special screening of the latest treat from Maestro Almodóvar.

Celia is an 11-year-old girl studying at a nun’s school in 1992. She’s a responsible student and a considerate daughter but the arrival of a new classmate will open a little window Celia is willing to look out from to discover about the outside world. Together with her group of friends she’ll give her first steps into adolescence and first-times even if that means confronting her mother and questioning everything that meant comfort and security. The film has won several awards among which Best Film, Best New Director, Best
Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay Goya Awards.

Trueba’s latest film tells the story of Héctor Abad Gómez, one of Colombia’s most beloved national heroes, through the eyes of his son. He balances a nuanced portrait of Abad Gómez’s family life in Medellín and the harsh reality of the country in the turbulent 1970s and 1980s, in which corruption is common and the government cannot be criticised. Based on the book written by Abad Gómez’s son, Memories of My Father is a memorable work, a love story and the portrait of a man fighting for the basic human rights of his
people: food, water and adequate shelter.

LA VOZ HUMANA
The Human Voice

Jean Cocteau wrote The Human Voice in 1928 and, since then, many artists have staged or filmed their own vision of this woman’s dramatic moments after her lover of the last few years leaves her to get married with to another woman. Almodóvar’s stunning version brings to The Human Voice his sense of aesthetics, of rhythm and his peculiar, subtle sense of humour, making the pièce his own. Chameleonic Swinton, in what seems a wonderful and perfect tuning with Almodóvar, captures the essence of his style bringing to it some
delightful British exquisiteness. A must.
The film will be followed by a 40 min video-Q&A with Pedro Almodóvar and Tilda Swinton with Mark Kermode. It will be preceded by a video-presentation by Prof. Maria Delgado

Lis is a teenager whose dream is to become a circus artist and go traveling. While she knows she’ll have to confront her parents and fight for it, she spends the summer playing around with her friends and with her boyfriend, a few years older than herself and the relationship with whom she tries to keep hidden from the constant gossip of the neighbours. Lucia Alemany’s impressive first feature film is a fresh coming-of-age story that captures perfectly the rural and festive mood without losing any realism nor honesty.

MY MEXICAN BRETZEL

Giménez’s debut film offers, through archive footage of home made movies, a glimpse into the life of a wealthy European couple, Léon and Vivian Barrett, after WW2 and up to the 1960s. The quality of the footage is superb and is accompanied by text from Vivian’s diary offering details of their lives, her thoughts, gossip… Mesmerising and compelling, this is a clever work of direction and of editing by Giménez, and has won her, among others, the Found Footage Award at the Internation Film Festival of Rotterdam last year.

When María and Verónica end up meeting and sharing a hospital room in Belgium, the only thing they have in common is that they are Spaniards who came to work to this country with the hope to find more opportunities than back at home. Slowly a bond grows between them and one of them will start a
journey to Almería, where the roots of the other are, initially to meet her family, finally to discover principles beyond those on which she had based her whole life. The film is poignant in his humble and intimate approach. The subtly nuanced acting of Petra Martínez in the lead role as a woman pushing herself
out of the boundaries of the role in which she felt confined, adds emotion to this wonderful film.

Deep seduction with Caribe Punk twist, a conversation with Dominican writer Yaissa Jiménezthat promises to be sharp and clear, without sacrificing the candid humidity of a tropical jungle. In the hands of the London-based, Venezuelan journalist Carla Tofano, who will unravel the uninterrupted moments of Yaissa’s poetry alongside her personal history. In collaboration with Metralla Rosa.

Authors Patria Román and Jessica Retis will be discussing with Silvia Rothlisberger (Literary South) their recently published book Narratives of Migration, Relocation and Belonging, a publication that gives voices to the diverse diasporic Latin American communities living in the UK by exploring first and onward migration of Latin Americans to Europe, with a specific reference to London. In collaboration with Flawa Festival and Literary South. (In English)

Mexican writer Olivia Teroba will talk with Jael de la Luz García about her bookUn lugar seguro(México, Paraíso Perdido Editorial, 2019) about «the place» for to be a woman writer, holding a dialogue with the British writer Virginia Woolf and her ideas about the importance to have a room of one´s own. In collaboration with The Feminist Library (In Spanish)

Join the distinguished translators Adam Feinstein and Richard Gwyn while they discuss the specific challenges involved in translating poetry. What is the role of the translator: interpreter, intermediary between the poet and the reader? Is it ever possible to maintain the delicate balance between music and meaning, especially in two such different languages as Spanish and English? (In English)

Mariza Bafile (ViceVersa Magazine),Lucila Carzoglio (Chop Suey Magazine), Flor Coll (femiñetas)will discuss with Silvia Demetilla (La Tundra Magazine) about the Indie Magazines Revolution, how independent media could survive in economic crisis, self-management, the digital era and the future of independent publishing. Illustrators, writers and all the ones who are truly engaged in literary tours for kids will share enriching experiences in order to understand the importance of reading fairy tales during childhood.
