Como cada miércoles a las seis, el Instituto Cervantes os ofrece una película en su acogedor Café Literario.  Esta semana se proyecta La lengua de las mariposas, dentro del ciclo “Una película, un libro” .

Está basada en el relato del mismo nombre y en otro más, Un saxo en la niebla. Ambos forman parte del libro ¿Qué me quieres, amor? de Manuel Rivas.

La historia se sitúa en 1936. Don Gregorio enseñará a Moncho con dedicación y paciencia toda su sabiduría en cuanto a los conocimientos, la literatura, la naturaleza, y hasta las mujeres. Pero el trasfondo de la amenaza política subsistirá siempre, especialmente cuando don Gregorio es atacado por ser considerado un enemigo del régimen fascista. Así se irá abriendo entre estos dos amigos una brecha, traída por la fuerza del contexto que los rodea. La política y la guerra se interponen entre las personas y desembocan, indefectiblemente, en la tragedia.

Manuel Rivas (A Coruña, 1957) es escritor, poeta, ensayista y periodista considerado la voz más sobresaliente de la literatura gallega contemporánea cuya obra está escrita originariamente en lengua gallega. Es autor de varias novelas cortas destacando El lápiz del carpintero (1998), Premio de la Crítica española.

José Luis Cuerda (Albacete, 1947) es director, guionista y productor de cine español. Ha trabajado en Televisión Española realizando más de 500 reportajes y documentales. En su obra vemos una etapa, inaugurada con El bosque animado, caracterizada por un humor surrealista con profundo sabor español. Ha adaptado dos veces la obra de Manuel Rivas, La lengua de las mariposas y Todo es silencio.

A la proyección le seguirá un debate dirigido a todo tipo de público.

As every Wednesday at 6pm, Instituto Cervantes shows a new film in its cosy Café Literario. The film for this week is  “The Butterfly´s Tongue”, part of the cinema series “One movie, one book”.

Based on stories from the book ¿Qué me quieres, amor? (What’s up my love?) by Manuel Rivas (A Coruña, 1957).

The story is about a young boy, Moncho who lives in a Galician town and goes to school for the first time and is taught by Don Gregorio about life and literature. At first Moncho is very scared that the teachers will hit him, as that was the standard procedure then, but after his first day at school, he is relieved that Don Gregorio doesn’t hit his pupils. Don Gregorio is unlike any other teacher, and he builds a special relationship with Moncho, and teaches him to love learning. When fascists take control of the town, they round up known Republicans, including Don Gregorio.

Manuel Rivas (A Coruña, 1957) is considered the most prominent contemporary writer, poet, essayist and journalist in Galician language. He is author of several short novels; El lápiz del carpintero is especially noteworthy. The recent film Todo es silencio by director José Luis Cuerda is based in Rivas’ novel Todo é silencio.

José Luis Cuerda (Albacete, 1947) is a Spanish film director, scriptwriter and producer. He has produced over 500 documentaries and reports for Spanish Public Broadcasting. Starting from El bosque animado, his films are notable for the surrealistic humour and a strong Spanish taste.

The screeening will be followed by an open discussion.

El pasado 27 de marzo se celebró el Día Mundial del Teatro, una tradición que comenzó en 1961 por iniciativa del Instituto Internacional del Teatro (ITI) y que la Unesco asumió como propia. Se trataba con ella de difundir y dar reconocimiento a esta arte escénica milenaria, que no pierde fuerza a pesar de los incesantes avances tecnológicos y las nuevas alternativas culturales.

En España, este día volvió a celebrarse imponiendo una bufanda blanca a la estatua de Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, una de los personajes fundamentales de la dramaturgia española, en el Paseo de Recoletos en Madrid.

Su obra más relevante, “Luces de Bohemia” y su protagonista, Max Estrella, son el origen de un recorrido cultural de carácter lúdico por las calles de la capital de España, similar a la celebración del Bloomsday dublinés.

Al recorrido se le llama “La noche de Max Estrella” y fue creada por el autor teatral Ignacio Amestoy Eguigure con el patrocinio del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid.

Durante la noche de Max Estrella se recorren algunas de las calles, plazas, plazuelas y callejones del centro Madrid que de una u otra manera aparecen en la obra de Valle-Inclán,  y algunos de los lugares que frecuentaba el autor. Cada una de las estaciones sirve como lugar de encuentro en el que se declaman versos y dramatizan pasajes literarios, se realizan bululús, se da lectura a manifiestos así como a otros textos y parlamentos, e incluso en algunas de las paradas se sirven aperitivos, refrigerios, tentempiés y viáticos.

Este año, con motivo del quince aniversario de esta celebración, el ya tradicional recorrido por las calles, fue sustituido por una maratón teatral en el Círculo de Bellas Artes en torno al genial dramaturgo. La representación de Luces de Bohemia fue el plato principal. Una vez más, Max Estrella, poeta miserable y ciego que vagabundea por un Madrid absurdo, brillante y hambriento de principios del siglo pasado volvió a la vida para recordarnos su última noche en la que tragedia, comedia y esperpento se unen indisolublemente.

Por todo ello, el teatro es nuestro tema del mes de abril en el Instituto Cervantes y la sección de teatro es la destacada en nuestra biblioteca. Ven a conocerla.

The World Day of  Theatre took place on the 27^th of March. It is an initiative that started in 1961 through the International Institute of Theatre of Unesco to promote this scenic art that keeps going strong despite incessant technological developments and new cultural options.

It was celebrated in Spain by putting once again a white scarf on the statue of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, one of the key pieces of Spanish drama. His most relevant play, “Luces de Bohemia” and his main character, Max Estrella” are the origin of a cultural route through the streets ofMadrid, it is an event similar to the Dubliner Bloomsday.

The name of the route is “The Max Estrella Night” and it was created by the playwright Ignacio Amestoy Eguigure with the support of the Circle of Fine Arts of Madrid.

It usually takes place during the evening and it goes along streets, squares, small squares and alleys of Madrid city centre rescuing the places, atmospheres and scenes that somehow appear in the play or were frequented by the author. Each stop serves as a meeting point where verses and monologues are recited, parts of the play performed, manifests are given and you can even drink and eat at some of the stops.

This year, as it is the fifteenth anniversary of this celebration, the route which has already become a tradition has been substituted by a theatrical marathon in the Circle of Fine Arts around this brilliant playwright. The performance of “Luces de Bohemia” was the main event. Once again, Max Estrella, miserable and blind poet who wanders around the absurd, shining and starving Madrid from the 19^th century, came back to life to remind us about his last night. A night where tragedy, comedy and a grotesque reality tie each other indissolubly.

For all these reasons, theatre is our topic this April at  Instituto Cervantes and our theatre section is the highlight in our library. Come to see it!

La Mucura, Los Panchos, Mariano Mores o Carlos Gardel son algunos de los clásicos latinos que sonarán esta noche de la mano de Kazemi, Sandoval & Cia, un trío especializado en levantar al público de sus asientos con su elegante y nostálgico repertorio de tangos, boleros, rumbas, salsa y cha cha cha de los años 20, 30 y 40.

Sus armas son la pasión de la guitarra española, la belleza del violín, la elegancia de sus voces y el buen humor latino, con las que ya han conquistado al público en salas como el Hampton Hotel de Donnybrook, el Project Arts Centre en Temple Bar, el Mansion House, Café en Seine, el Radisson Saint Helen’s Hotel o el Festival Internacional de Tango de Dublín, por citar solo unos cuantos.

Tables and chairs out, polished flooring, party lights, wine instead of coffee… Attention salseros: This evening our Café Literario gets dressed up in ballroom!

La Mucura, Los Panchos, Mariano Mores and Carlos Gardel are some of the Latin classics to be played this evening by Kazemi, Sandoval & Cia, a trio specialized in getting the audience out of their seats with their elegant and nostalgic repertoire of tangos, boleros, rumbas, salsa and cha cha cha from the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Their weapons are the passionate Spanish guitar, the beautiful sound of violin, their elegant voices and Latin good mood. With these they have already conquered the audience in Hampton Hotel in Donnybrook, the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar, Mansion House, Café en Seine, Radisson Saint Helen’s Hotel and International Tango Festival in Dublin, to mention but a few.

La segunda sesión del ciclo “Un libro, una película” tendrá lugar esta tarde a las seis en el Café Literario. Se proyectará la película “La colmena”, la adaptación de uno de los clásicos recientes de la literatura española. Está basada en la novela homónima del Premio Nobel de Literatura (1989) Camilo José Cela (1916-2002).

Autor muy prolífico, trabajó como novelista, periodista, ensayista, editor y conferenciante. Fue académico de la Real Academia Española y recibió numerosos reconocimientos como el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1989 o el Premio Cervantes en 1995. Fue autor de más de 60 obras y de novelas memorables que también han sido llevadas al cine, destacando La familia de Pascual Duarte y La colmena.

“La colmena” es una historia coral que se inicia, y continúa a veces, en el café La Delicia. El café está siempre repleto de personas que huyen del frío, que se refugian en la charla, en la compañía, y en los sueños… Son sesenta personajes, dentro y fuera del café, que vemos vivir en las calles y en las casas de la ciudad. Son un torrente de gentes que a veces son felices, y a veces, no. Tras ellos, como fondo, el paisaje urbano del Madrid de la posguerra, tan especial, tan distinto, tan sórdido, tan luminoso a veces. El tema principal de la película es el contraste entre los poetas que sobreviven a la miseria bajo el régimen franquista y los ganadores de la guerra, una clase emergente que hace dinero fácil a través de negocios ilegales.

Dirige la película Mario Camus (Santander, 1935). Estudió cine en la Escuela Oficial después de pasar por la facultad de derecho. Destaca por su maestría en la dirección de adaptaciones cinematográficas al cine.

A la proyección le seguirá un debate dirigido a todo tipo de público a cargo del profesor Juan Pablo Auñón.

The second session of the cinemas series “One book, one film” will take place today at 6pm in the Café Literario. It will be screened the film “La colmena”, the adaptation of one of the recent classics of the Spanish Literature. It is based on a 1943 book of the same title by the Nobel Price in Literature (1989) Camilo José Cela (1916-2002).

He was a prolific novelist, journalist, essayist, editor and lecturer. He was appointed member of the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española). Amongst some of the numerous awards he received are the 1989 Nobel Prize in Literature or the Cervantes Prize in 1995. He published over 60 works and memorable novels that were adapted to the cinema like La familia de Pascual Duarte y La colmena.

“La Colmena” is an ensemble film that features the comings and goings of a wide variety of characters, all trying to survive in a poverty-stricken Madrid during World War II. Rather than feature any single story line, these people from all walks of life cross paths almost randomly as they come to a café to sip their one cup of coffee and work on a book, or pick up a prostitute, or get their shoes shined, or play billiards, or just warm themselves on a cold winter’s day. The main theme of the film is the contrast between the poets, surviving close to misery under the Franco’s regime, and the winners of the war, the emerging class of the people that makes easy money with illegal business.

Mario Camus (Santander, 1935) studied law followed by cinema studies at the Spanish Official Cinema
School. He belongs to the so called “New cinema generation” together with Saura and Martín Patino amongst others. He excels in his work as director of screen adaptations.

The screening will be followed by an open discussion moderated by the teacher Juan Pablo Auñón.

Un libro, una película  es un ciclo de cine centrado en la relación entre el séptimo arte y la literatura con el que podrás acercarte a obras clásicas y contemporáneas de la literatura en español y disfrutar de sus adaptaciones cinematográficas.

Con el fin de abrir una discusión y de ofrecer un espacio para la reflexión, cada película será introducida por un moderador que guiará el posterior debate tras cada proyección. Este debate está dirigido a todo tipo de público.

La primera de estas películas se emitirá este miércoles a las seis de la tarde en el Café Literario. Se trata de “Soldados de Salamina”, basada en la novela homónima del escritor Javier Cercas y es su libro más reconocido hasta la fecha. Obtuvo gran repercusión por los comentarios favorables de autores tan prestigiosos como Mario Vargas Llosa, Susan Sontang o J. M. Coetzee.

La película está dirigida por David Trueba, considerado uno de los jóvenes talentos del cine español. “Soldados de Salamina” es su película más conocida hasta la fecha y fue candidata a representar a España en los Oscar como mejor película extranjera. David Trueba es un autor polifacético que compagina su trabajo como director de cine con la de guionista, escritor y periodista.

Soldados de Salamina narra la historia de una novelista que ha abandonado su carrera de escritora y rastrea una historia real sucedida en los últimos días de la Guerra Civil, la historia del escritor y falangista Rafael Sánchez Mazas, “fusilado” junto a otros cincuenta prisioneros, pero que logró huir por el bosque y esconderse bajo la lluvia. Al parecer, un soldado de los que peinaban la zona intentando capturarlo lo encontró, pero le dejó escapar. La escritora recompone las piezas de esta historia, plagada de contradicciones y personajes enigmáticos. En su búsqueda, sin saberlo, no sólo persigue encontrar la verdad, sino encontrarse a sí misma.

Su director describe muy bien la película con estas palabras: “Trata de la soledad, de la recuperación de las ganas de vivir y de los buenos sentimientos como razones para seguir viviendo”.

This month Instituto Cervantes  in Dublin offers  you  a new interesting cinema series:  One book, one film. It will be focussed on the relationship between cinema and literature and you will have the chance to get a closer look to classic and contemporary works of  Spanish literature by seeing their adaptation on screen.

The screenings will be followed by an open discussion introduced by a moderator who will conduct a debate  in order to discuss and reflect on the film. This debate is open to all kind of public.

The first film will be shown this Wednesday at 6pm at the Café Literario. It is “Soldados de Salamina” based on the homonymous novel by Javier Cercas. It is his most renowned novel so far and got a big impact on the literary scene with big praise from prestigious authors like Mario Vargas Llosa and Coetzee.

The film is directed by David Trueba who is considered one of the young talents of  Spanish cinema. “Soldados de Salamina” is his most famous movie and it was chosen to represent Spainto in the Oscar Awards in the best foreign film category. He is a versatile author as he combines his work as a film director with his facets as screenwriter, journalist and writer.

The film is about a professor and writer (Lola Sánchez) who is assigned to write a column in the newspaper about the Spanish Civil War, she researches and finds for the first time about the shooting of Rafael Sánchez Mazas. Lola has lost her passion for writing, and she becomes intrigued about Rafael, who was a writer and journalist who returned to Spain from the Italy of Mussolini and founded the fascist party Spanish Falange, becoming advisor of the leader Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera. Lola decides to write a book about the historic event and to disclose the identity of the unknown soldier.

The director describes very well the film with these words: “It´s about solitude, getting back the desire for life and the good feelings, making of them reasons to keep going”.

Don´t miss this touching movie and participate in the debate after the film moderated by the teacher Carmen Sanjulián.

Si quieres practicar tu español a través de la música, te proponemos este taller interactivo en el que aprenderás y mejorarás tu español de forma entretenida y en una atmósfera relajada.  

En las sesiones se  trabajarán diferentes canciones en español por medio de audiciones, contextualización del autor y estilo, traducción y comprensión de las letras, discusión y profundización de usos de expresiones idiomáticas y por supuesto, interpretación del tema.

Dirigido a alumnos de cualquier nivel dispuestos a pasar un buen rato con ganas de aprender, participar y por supuesto cantar. Estará impartido por el músico y compositor Fernando Blanco Vicente.

If you want to practise your Spanish through songs, we offer you this workshop in which you can practise and improve your Spanish in an entertaining way and with a great atmosphere.

This is your opportunity thanks to this interactive workshop that will enable you to improve your Spanish through music. The sessions will offer you the opportunity to work with Spanish songs, listen to the music and explore the author and his/her style in context. You will work on translation and lyrics comprehension, discussion, exploration of sayings and phrases and, of course, song interpretation! Learn and practise your Spanish in a relaxed and fun environment.

Designed for students of any level who want to have fun while learning, participating and, of course, ‘singing’. It will be taught by Spanish music and composer Fernando Blanco Vicente.

Hoy continuamos con la segunda sesión del ciclo de cine chileno contemporáneo organizado por el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín en cooperación con la Embajada de Chile en Irlanda. Con esta muestra intentamos ofrecer al público irlandés una perspectiva del arte cinematográfico chileno contemporáneo.

La película de hoy es “Los debutantes”, que cuenta la historia de dos hermanos huérfanos que llegan a Santiago a probar suerte. El menor quiere “perder su virginidad” (Víctor) y el mayor (Silvio) necesita dinero para mantenerlos a ambos.

La vida de los hermanos se quiebra cuando Silvio encuentra trabajo como asistente personal de un empresario mafioso y no puede resistir la tentación de iniciar un romance clandestino con Gracia, la chica que por el día trabaja como taquillera en un cine porno y por la noche como bailarina en un club nocturno. De ella, que además es la amante de su jefe, es de quien Víctor se enamora platónicamente.

No recomendada a menores de 18 años.

Today we show the second film of the Chilean Cinema Season organized by Instituto Cervantes in cooperation with the Embassy of Chile in Ireland. We intend to offer an insight into the cinematographic contemporary art from Chile to the Irish audience.

The film that we show today is “Los debutantes”. It tells the story of two orphan brothers who arrive to Santiago to try their luck. The younger one (Víctor) dreams with losing his virginity and the older brother (Silvio) needs money to support both of them. Their lives change when Silvio finds a job as personal assistant for a mafia businessman and he cannot resist the temptation of starting a secret romance with Gracia, the girl who works during the day as the box-office clerk of a porn cinema and at night as a stripper in a night club. She also is also the lover of Silvio´s boss and Victor falls in love with her platonically.

Fit for viewing by persons aged 18 years+

La Biblioteca Nacional celebra su tercer siglo de existencia con una variada programación que constituye una de las propuestas culturales más atractivas de este año.

La Biblioteca Nacional de España no es solo una de las instituciones culturales más emblemáticas de nuestro país, sino que es además una de las que mejor ha sabido adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos, a los desafíos de cada momento.

Rememorando sus orígenes, en diciembre de 1711, el Rey Felipe V aprobó la creación de una Real Biblioteca abierta al público que se inauguró en marzo de 1722. Se dice pronto, pero la Biblioteca Nacional es también la más antigua de todas cuantas existen en los países de habla hispana.

Alberga 30 millones de documentos, 240 kilómetros lineales de estanterías, con un depósito robotizado de más de 30 kilómetros. Para facilitar la consulta de los distintos tipos de fondos, se encuentra dividida en salas: monografías desde el siglo XIX (Salón General), fondo antiguo (Sala Cervantes), revistas y periódicos (Sala de Prensa y Revistas), grabados, fotografías, mapas y dibujos (Sala Goya), partituras, registros sonoros y audiovisuales (Sala Barbieri).

Con motivo de su aniversario la Biblioteca Nacional de España inauguró la exposición “300 años haciendo historia”, que organiza junto con Acción Cultural Española.

Hasta el 15 de Abril, se expondrán sólo 240 obras, entre las que se encuentran tesoros como, El ‘Beato de Liébana’, códices de Leonardo da Vinci, grabados de Rembrandt, Velázquez, Durero, Piranesi y Goya; incunables, manuscritos de Lope de Vega, Galdós, Gómez dela Serna, Dalí, Lorca, Borges y unos sonetos autógrafos de Miguel Hernández escritos en la cárcel.

Una especie de viaje en el tiempo, pero también una mirada hacia el futuro porque su gran reto es ese desde hace unos años: modernizarse y acercarse al gran público digitalizando parte de sus fondos y aumentando su presencia en las redes sociales.

Con motivo de su “cumpleaños”, la biblioteca ha creado una pagina especifica para estos actos Pagina del Tricentenario, donde podemos encontrar toda la información sobre los próximo actos conmemorativos.

The National Library commemorates its third century of existence with a varied programme that is one of the most attractive cultural proposals of this year.

The National Library of Spain is not only one of the most emblematic of our cultural institutions but it has also changed with the times adapting to the challenges of modern society.

Going back to its origins, in December of 1711, the King Felipe V approved the project of creating a Royal Library open to the public, it was opened in March 1722. It is easy to say but it is not only the oldest and the most important library of Spain, but also of the rest of the Spanish speaker countries.

It contains 30 million documents, 240 linear km of shelves, with a mechanical deposit of over 30km. It is divided in different rooms to make consultation easier: monographs since the XIX century (General Room), old archive (Cervantes Room), magazines and newspapers (Press Room), engravings, photographs, maps and drawings (Goya Room), music scores, sound recordings and audiovisual recordings (Barbieri Room).

An exhibition has been organized to celebrate the anniversary of the library. The name is “National Library of Spain: 300 Years Making History” in cooperation with Acción Cultural Española.

240 works are shown until the 15th of April, we can find treasures as “El Beato de Liebana”, Leonardo da Vinci´s codex, engravings by Rembrandt, Velázquez, Durero, Piranesi and Goya; incunabulum by Lope de Vega, Galdós, Gómez de la Serna, Dalí, Lorca, Borges and and some autographed sonnets written by Miguel Hernández while he was in jail.

It is a kind of time travel but also focussing on the future. In the last few years the biggest challenge of the institution has been to modernize and seek a larger public by digitalizing part of its funds and showing a great activity in the social networks.

The National Library has created a special web-site to celebrate its “birthday” where you can check all the inform
ation about the next commemorative events. The name of the web site is Página del Tricentenario.

Este miércoles llega a nuestro Café Literario una de las películas más controvertidas de los últimos años, Camino, ganadora del Goya a la mejor película en el año 2008.

Pamplona, junio de 2001. Camino, una niña de once años, vive sus últimos momentos en la habitación de un hospital. Rodeada de familiares, amigos, sacerdotes y un gran número de personal clínico, da a todos un ejemplo de muerte serena y feliz. En una atmósfera de santidad y cuando parece que la muerte es ya inevitable, ocurre algo extraordinario en la habitación.

Inspirada en hechos reales, “Camino” es una aventura emocional en torno a una extraordinaria niña de once años que se enfrenta al mismo tiempo a dos acontecimientos que son completamente nuevos para ella: enamorarse y morir.

Javier Fesser es director y guionista español. Con esta película, Fesser abrió un debate en España sobre el modus operandi del Opus Dei. La familia de Alexia González Barros, en quién se inspiró Fesser, se declaró en contra de la película.

En palabras de Fesser, “Camino pretende ser una historia objetiva, sin prejuicios ni estereotipos. Una película espaciosa que muestre la realidad sin juzgarla. Casi una radiografía. Por eso precisamente se permite el lujo de ser nítida, directa y contundente”.

We show in the Café Literario today one of the most controversial movies in the last few years, Camino, winner of the Goya Award for Best Film in 2008.

Pamplona, Spain, June 2001. Camino, an eleven year old girl is on her deathbed in a hospital room. Surrounded by her family, friends, priests and sanitary personnel she gives example of a happy and serene death. In this holy atmosphere and when death seems inevitable, an extraordinary event takes place in her room.

Camino is a film based on a true story. It is an emotional adventure that takes place around an extraordinary eleven year old girl that is facing two completely new emotions: falling in love and dying.

Javier Fesser is a Spanish director and screen writer. With “Camino”, Fesser opened a debate on the Opus Dei inSpain. Alexia´s family, the girl that Fesser based his film on were opposed to the film.

In the words of Fesser, “Camino is meant to be a story told from an objective angle, free from prejudiced or stereotyped mindsets. A film which regards reality with a generous gaze, without judging it. Rather like an x-ray image. And this is precisely the reason for this film’s bold, closely focused and severe quality”.

Miguel Hernández (1910-1942) forma parte de esa lista negra de insignes poetas y escritores a los que la Guerra Civil Española sesgó la vida y con ella una brillante trayectoria en la literatura. No hizo falta que se ejecutara su sentencia de muerte, la insalubridad de la cárcel de Alicante, a la que había sido confinado por su participación en el frente republicano, se lo llevó a los 32 años.

A pesar de su temprana muerte, su precocidad en las letras y su tenacidad incluso en las condiciones más duras nos han dejado un amplio repertorio de poemas y obras de teatro que os invitamos a conocer durante este mes en nuestra biblioteca. Es imprescindible hurgar también en la sección musical porque muchos autores han converitdo sus poemas en canciones: Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Jara, Enrique Morente, Camarón dela Isla, Extremoduro, etc. Además, el 20 de febrero el Café Literario será escenario de En otra voz: Homenaje a Thomas MacGreevy y Miguel Hernández.

Siendo vástago de familia humilde, la formación de Miguel Hernández fue prácticamente autodidacta como voraz lector de poesía clásica española. Una vez prendida en él la llama literaria, se hace asiduo de las tertulias de su Orihuela natal y en 1930 se traslada a Madrid, donde entra en contacto con los poetas de la generación del 27. En ese mismo año empiezan a publicarse sus obras, en cuya evolución intervienen el barroco, el surrealismo, los movimientos obreros, las penurias de la guerra, la cárcel… En ellas dejó plasmados su  humanidad, sus convencimientos ideológicos, su alto sentido de la justicia y su amor al pueblo. Como diría su amigo Pablo Neruda, “recordar a Miguel Hernández que desapareció en la oscuridad y recordarlo a plena luz, es un deber de España, un deber de amor”.

Miguel Hernández (1910-1942) is part of the black list of prominent writers and poets whose lives and brilliant literary careers were cut short by the Spanish Civil War. He was sentenced to death; however the insalubrious conditions in the prison of Alicante, where he had been confined to for his involvement in the republican front, took his life earlier at the age of 32.

In spite of passing away so young, his early interest for literature and tenacity even in the hardest times made him produce a wide range of poems and plays which we invite you to discover during this month at our library. We highly recommend to take a look also at the music section, as many of his poems have been converted into songs by famous singers: Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Jara, Enrique Morente, Camarón dela Isla, Extremoduro, etc. Furthermore, on February 20^th we carry out at Café Literario the event In a different voice, a tribute to Miguel Hernández and Irish poet Thomas MacGreevy.

Coming from a humble family, Miguel Hernández was a self-taught who virtually got his education by avidly reading Spanish classical poetry. Once he was captivated by the books, he started to attend the literary circle of his home town, Orihuela, and in 1930 he moved to Madrid, where he got in contact with writers from the generation of 1927. His books started to be published on that same year and they’re influenced by Spanish baroque, surrealism, the labour movements, the hardships of war, the prison… His writings are a reflection of his humanity, his ideals, his high sense of justice and his love for the people. Quoting his friend Pablo Neruda, “it is a duty of Spain, a duty of love, to remember Miguel Hernández in broad daylight, as he disappeared in the dark”.

El Instituto Cervantes extiende su alfombra roja para ofrecernos un ciclo de cine dedicado a  las películas ganadoras de los  Premios Goya en los últimos años. Nada mejor que comenzar con una película que arrasó en la edición de 2011, y que fue seleccionada para representar a España en los Oscar de este año: Pa Negre, del director Agustí Villaronga.

La película nos traslada a los años de la posguerra en la Cataluña rural.  Andreu, un niño que pertenece al bando de los perdedores, encuentra en el bosque los cadáveres de un hombre y su hijo. Las autoridades quieren cargarle las muertes a su padre, pero él, para ayudarle, intenta averiguar quiénes son los auténticos responsables. En este recorrido, Andreu desarrolla una conciencia moral frente a un mundo de adultos alimentado por las mentiras. Para sobrevivir, traiciona sus propias raíces y acaba descubriendo el monstruo que habita en él.

No os olvidéis, en el Café Literario tenemos cine de lujo ¡Aunque no hace falta vestir con glamour para poder entrar!

Instituto Cervantes displays  its red carpet  with  a season  of  films that have been acknowledged with a Goya Award.  There´s nothing better  to begin with than a movie awarded with nine  Goya Awards in  2011. The film was also short-listed  for an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.  We are talking about  Black Bred, by  Agustí Villaronga.

Black Bred is set in the war-ravaged Catalan countryside during the  1940’s .  A local man is accused of murderer and his son sets out to find out the truth. The eleven-year-old Andreau stumbles upon a crushed wagon hidden under the underbrush close to a high cliff and witnesses the dying moments of a man and boy who are inside. When the police tries to put the blame on  Andreu’s father , he goes into hiding and Andreau is sent away to live with some relatives. The frightened boy starts to create a fantasy life there but he is forced to confront a world of adult deception, festering hatred and the monstrous consequences of war.

Don´t forget, we´ve got luxury cinema in the Café Literario ,   you don´t need  glamorous  clothes to come in though!

Se acerca final de año y es hora de hacer balance. Conscientes de que la inmensa base del iceberg se nos queda en el tintero, destacamos las siguientes efemérides de un 2011 plagado de grandes acontecimientos literarios:

• Por lo que respecta a galardones, el querido José Luis Sampedro se reafirma como una eminencia tras recibir el Premio Nacional de las Letras. El Premio Cervantes viaja a Chile con el poeta Nicanor Parra. La novela El imperio eres tú, de Javier Moro, se lleva el Premio Planeta y el Nadal lo gana Alicia Giménez con Donde nadie te encuentre.
• En el apartado aniversarios, homenajeamos a Gaspar Melchor Jovellanos por el bicentenario de su muerte. Se cumplieron también 25 años de la muerte de Borges y desafortunadamente dijimos adiós a Ernesto Sabato, a Josefina Aldecoa y a Gonzalo Rojas.
• Por nuestra parte, 2011 se ha saldado con 240 entradas de blog, 6 Entrevistas Digitales y una veintena de Encuentros en la Biblioteca con eminentes personalidades de la cultura en español: un acervo documental nada desdeñable que nuestros lectores podrán disfrutar durante muchos años.

Después de todo esto, nos tomamos una pequeña pausa para coger fuerzas y seguir aportando nuestro granito de arena a la escena literaria durante 2012. La biblioteca y el blog volverán a abrir sus puertas el 11 de enero.

Solo nos queda desearos unas estupendas Navidades y un Feliz y Literario 2012.

The end of the year is drawing near so it’s time to take stock. Although we are aware that the vast base of the iceberg will remain unsaid, we extract the following highlights from a 2011 riddled with exceptional literary events:

• Concerning awards, the well-liked José Luis Sampedro established himself as a leading figure after receiving the Spanish National Literary Prize. The Miguel the Cervantes Prize went to Chili, to poet Nicanor Parra. The novel El imperio eres tú by Javeir Moro was awarded the Planeta Prize and Donde nadie te encuentre by Alicia Giménez was awarded the Nadal Prize.
• In the anniversaries section, we commemorated the bicentenary of the death of Gaspar Melchor Jovellanos and the 25 anniversary of Borges’ death. Furthermore, we unfortunately said goodbye to Ernesto Sabato, Josefina Aldecoa and Gonzalo Rojas.
• As for us, this year ends with 240 more posts in our blog, 6 Virtual Interviews and about 20 Meetings at the Library with prominent figures of the arts and literature in Spanish –a significant documentary asset that our readers will enjoy for many years.

After all this, we take a little break to get our strength back and keep on doing our bit for the literary scene in 2012. Both the library and the blog will resume on January 11th.

It just remains to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and Literary 2012.

El ciclo “Cine y gastronomía” nos propone hoy un plato para gourmets de la gran pantalla. Del director Jorge Coria, 18 comidas nos presenta historias cruzadas con la mesa y la búsqueda de la felicidad como común denominador. ¡Que les aproveche!

The film series “Cinema and gastronomy” brings us today a recipe for gourmets of the big screen. 18 meals, by Director Jorge Coria, depicts interlocking stories with food and the search of happiness as a common denominator. Bon appétit!

La poeta y traductora irlandesa Anamaría Crowe Serrano tuvo la amabilidad de concedernos esta pequeña entrevista dentro de la serie “Encuentros en la Biblioteca”. En ella conversa con Pilar Garrido sobre su llegada a la literatura, su concepto de la poesía y su trabajo como traductora literaria. El video está subtitulado en español e inglés.

Como se adivina por su nombre, Anamaría Crowe Serrano vive a caballo entre dos culturas, la irlandesa y la española. Es profesora de lengua española y traductora de poesía contemporánea del español e italiano al inglés. Además de sus traducciones en inglés de los poetas mexicanos, Gerardo Beltrán y Elsa Cross (Selected Poems, Shearsman, 2010), también se han publicado sus traducciones en español de Brendan Kennelly y Seamus Heaney. En narrativa ha publicado relatos cortos y una obra para teatro.

Como poeta, es autora del poemario Femispheres (Shearsman, UK, 2008). Ha sido galardonada por el Arts Council of Ireland y en febrero de este año participó en el proyecto colectivo Upstart durante la campaña electoral.

Nuestros“Encuentros en la Biblioteca” son una serie de entrevistas a personalidades del mundo de las letras y la cultura en general que se realizan en la biblioteca del Instituto Cervantes de Dublín. Esta iniciativa nació con el propósito de servir de plataforma de encuentro entre escritores y lectores y de contribuir a nuestra misión de difusión de la cultura en español.

Irish poet and translator Anamaría Crowe Serrano was so kind to give us this brief interview within the series “Meetings at the library”, where she talks with Pilar Garrido about her literary beginnings, her concept of poetry and her career as a literary translator. The interview is subtitled in Spanish and English.

As we may guess from her name, Anamaría Crowe Serrano’s life runs between two cultures, Irish and Spanish. She works as a teacher of Spanish and translator of contemporary poetry from Italian and Spanish into English. She has also translated into English the Mexican poets, Gerardo Beltrán and Elsa Cross (Selected Poems, Shearsman, 2010) as well as some of Brendan Kennelly’s and Seamus Heaney’s work into Spanish. As a writer she has published a collection of short stories, a one-act play, and a collection of poetry, titled Femispheres (Shearsman,UK, 2008). She is the recipient of two awards from the Arts Council of Ireland and recently partook in the Upstart poetry collective during the election campaign.

“Meetings at the library” is the title of a series of interviews with important figures in literature and the arts in general held at the Library of Instituto Cervantes Dublin. This initiative was conceived with the aim to serve as a meeting point between writers and readers and to contribute to our mission of disseminating the culture in Spanish.
