Tercera y última sesión del ciclo con el que hemos celebrado la poesía amorosa española. En cada una de ellas, poetas y traductores han ofrecido una mirada fresca a la obra de algunos de los más destacados poetas españoles.

Federico García Lorca es considerado como el más famoso y reconocido poeta y autor teatral del siglo XX en español. Su obra poética, entre la que se encuentran el Romancero Gitano y Poeta en Nueva York, le sitúan en un lugar privilegiado de la literatura española, y sus piezas teatrales, como la reconocida trilogía Bodas de sangre, La casa de Bernarda Alba y Yerma, le han hecho ser comparado, por su influencia e importancia, con Shakespeare.

Jane Duran inició su carrera poética con la Breathe Now, Breathe (Enitharmon, 1995), que obtuvo el Forward Prize al mejor primer poemario. Su segundo libro de poemas, Silences from the Spanish Civil War apareció en 2002, también editado por Enitharmon; otro tanto sucedió con el siguiente, Coastal, en 2005, que recibió una recomendación de la “Poetry Book Society” y el premio Cholmondeley es mismo año. Su último volumen publicado data de 2010, Graceline, y también fue recomendado por la sociedad mencionada.

Gloria García Lorca nació en Nueva York, donde vivió hasta 1967. Estudió en la Universidad de Madrid y, anteriormente, en Sarah Lawrence College, graduándose en 1967. Vive y trabaja en Madrid desde el año 1973, desarrollando una extensa carrera como artista plástica y ceramista. Es co-traductora, junto a Jane Duran, de la edición en inglés de El Romancero Gitano publicada por Enitharmon en 2011.

The final event in the Mi Amor series, celebrating Spanish love poetry. In each of these events, contemporary poets and translators have taken a fresh look at some of the most important poets in the Spanish language.

Federico Garcia Lorca remains the most famous and celebrated modern poet and playwright in the Spanish language. His poetical works, including the Gypsy Ballads and Poet in New York, are landmarks in Spanish literature, and his plays, including the famous trilogy Blood Wedding, The House of Bernanda Alba and Yerma, have been compared to Shakespeare for their importance and influence.

Jane Duran’s debut collection, Breathe Now, Breathe (Enitharmon, 1995) won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Her second collection Silences from the Spanish Civil War was published in 2002 by Enitharmon, her third collection Coastal (Enitharmon, 2005) received a PBS Recommendation. She received a Cholmondeley Award in 2005. Her latest collection Graceline was published in 2010 and is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

Gloria García Lorca is the niece of Federico Garcia Lorca. Her family moved to New York during the end of the Spanish Civil War. In 1967 they returned to Spain, and since 1973 Gloria has worked as a plastic artist, specialising in installations and site specific art. She is also a ceramicist. Gloria García Lorca translated Lorca’s Gypsy Ballads with the poet Jane Duran in 2011 (Enitharmon Press).

A talk by Lady Rachel Billington on the research for her latest novel

Maria and the Admiral is a novel based on the meeting between two real and extraordinary people in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1822. Both were British of Scottish descent. Maria Graham was a travel writer whose husband, a sea captain, died as his ship rounded Cape Horn. Admiral Lord Cochrane was a Napoleonic naval hero who ran foul of the Admiralty, spent time in prison and re-found his vocation as admiral of the new Chilean fleet. His tactical brilliance helped achieve independence for Chile and made him a hero once more. But no-one, as amply demonstrated by her journals, admired him more than Maria Graham.

Lady Rachel Billington tells the story from Maria’s point of view, recreating her life and character, after research in Chile, London and Scotland. In her talk she describes her own journey, both literal and figurative, in following Maria and Cochrane’s dramatic story. It is the story of a great love which endured earthquake, civil war and eventual separation. It is also an accurately researched picture of Chile as it emerged into independence.
The author, Lady Rachel Bilington, has published 21 novels for adults, six novels for children and six religious childrens’ books. She is an honorary Vice-President of English PEN, the writers’ organisation, and was made an OBE in 2012 for her services to literature. Rachel’s stimulus to write Maria and the Admiral came from a visit she paid to Chile in 2002 after her daughter married a Chilean.
The inaugural Sir Leslie Bowes Lecture was in 1989, following his death in 1988. Sir Leslie had a long and deep connection with Canning House (Chairman 1964-66; Vice-President 1967), and very close links with Latin America over many years. He was Vice-Chairman of the Anglo-Chilean (Chairman ‘65-70), Anglo-Peruvian, Anglo-Mexican, Anglo-Argentine and Anglo-Brazilian Societies.
Entry to the lecture is free, and a collection will be made afterwards, the profit from which will go towards the restoration of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Valparaíso, Chile.

Jordi Puntí es licenciado en Filología Románica. En 1998 publicó su primer libro de cuentos, Pell d’armadillo (Proa, 1998), por el que se le concedió el Premi de la Crítica Serra d’Or y fue publicado en castellano por Salamandra. Cuatro años más tarde, Puntí confirmó su madurez literaria con Animals tristos (Empúries 2002), que fue finalista del Premi dels LLibreters. Animals tristos tuvo también una versión cinematográfica de la mano del director Ventura Pons con el título de Animals ferits. Es traductor (entre otros autores, ha traducido a Daniel Pennac, Amélie Nothomb y Paul Auster) y colaborador habitual en prensa escrita y radio. Hoy por hoy es considerado una de las voces más interesantes en el panorama narrativo en lengua catalana. Su esperada primera novela, Maletes perdudes (Empúries, 2010; Salamandra, 2010) ha tenido una extraordinaria acogida tanto en catalán como en castellano y ha merecido el Premi Llibreter, el Premi de la Crítica 2011, el Premi Lletra d’Or 2011 y el Premi Joaquin Amat-Piniella 2010. Su último trabajo publicado es la recopilación de artículos Els castellans (L’Avenç, 2011; Xordica, 2013).

Jordi Puntí is a writer, translator and a regular contributor to the Spanish press. In 1998 he published his first book of short stories, Pell d’armadillo (Proa, 1998) which won the Critics’ Prize Serra d’Or and was published in Spanish by Salamandra. Four years after this celebrated first collection, Jordi Puntí confirmed his literary maturity with Animals tristos (Empúries, 2002), published in 7 languages and turned into a film twice. After publishing his first novel Maletes perdudes (Empúries, 2010), that has won several awards and is a huge bestseller, his latest title is a collection of articles,Els castellans (L’Avenç, 2011; Xordica, 2013).

Hay-on-Way Festival 2012 Alejandro Zambra
Alejandro Zambra (Santiago de Chile, 1975) ha publicado libros de poesía, ensayo y novelas, ampliamente traducidas; al mismo tiempo, es colaborador asiduo, escribiendo sobre literatura, en diversos medios de prensa de chilenos y en “Babelia”, suplemento cultural de El País. Actualmente es profesor de literatura de la Universidad Diego Portales. Bonsái fue galardonada con el Premio de la Crítica como la mejor novela chilena de 2006 y convertida en película con el mismo título por Cristián Giménez, estrenada en Cannes en la selección A certain regard. Alejandro Zambra fue además seleccionado entre los mejores narradores jóvenes en español por la revista Granta.

Alejandro Zambra was born in Santiago de Chile in 1975. His has published a number poetry books, essays and novels, most of his works have been translated to other languages. He contributes with various Chilean and Spanish publications (“Babelia” from El País newspaper). At present, He teaches Literature at University of Diego Portales (Chile). Alejandro Zambra was chosen  as one the best young authors in Spanish language by Granta magazine.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) es una de las figuras literarias españolas más destacadas, cumbre del Romanticismo. Aunque murió antes de que gran parte de su obra fuese publicada, sus poemas influyeron notablemente sobre las generaciones posteriores de escritores a lo largo del siglo XX. Sus Rimas y Leyendas están consideradas entre las mejores piezas de la poesía en español

Derek Flitter, Catedrático de Estudios Hispánicos en la Universidad de Exeter, ha realizado numerosas publicaciones sobre distintos aspectos de la literatura del Romanticismo español, la poesía española del siglo XlX y de los inicios del siglo XX. En sus libros en este campo, se incluyen Spanish Romanticism and the Uses of History (2006) and Spanish Romantic Literary Theory and Criticism (2006).

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) is one of Spain’s most important literary figures, towering over theRomantic age. Although he died before the majority of his work was published, his poems greatly influenced the following generations of writers throughout the twentieth century, and his Rimas and Leyendas are considered some of the most important work in Spanish poetry.

Derek Flitter is Professor in Hispanic Studies at the University of Exeter. He has published widely on various aspects of Spanish Romantic literature, and on Spanish poetry of the nineteenth and early twentieth-century. His books on the subject include Spanish Romanticism and the Uses of History (2006) and Spanish Romantic Literary Theory and Criticism (2006).

This volume intends to link television medium with the democratic transition, a turning point in 20th Century Spanish history the assessment of which, whether positive or negative, raises passionate debate. The principal aim is to consider the role that TVE (the Spanish public television) played in the political, social and cultural processes that occurred from the time of the francoist dictatorship political regime to one of public freedom (1974-1981).
