En una primera entrega en marzo, abril y mayo, proponemos dos rutas para descubrir lugares emblemáticos relacionados con los exiliados españoles protestantes (siglo XVI), liberales (siglo XIX) y republicanos (siglo XX).

A lo largo de 2022 iremos ampliando el catálogo de itinerarios, que tendrán lugar los sábados por la mañana, elaborados y realizados por Milagros Dapena-Collopy (“Qualified Blue Badge London Tourist Guide”).

Ruta 1, Memoria de nuestros Exilios

Londres fue la capital del exilio para muchos españoles, la otra patria. Por ella deambularon los protestantes, los liberales y, un siglo más tarde desde este Londres conoció el final de la Guerra Civil y sufrieron los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial los desterrados republicanos.

Para poder conocer la presencia española en tierras británicas y agradecer su contribución a la cultura española y a la memoria de todos, en nuestro recorrido conoceremos lugares donde vivieron y trabajaron, y siguiendo sus huellas ahondaremos en sus vivencias y secretos.

Panic Cure es una selección de poemas de “diez innovadores poetas españoles contemporáneos” escritos en español. Más que de una visión exhaustiva de la poesía española, se trata de una personalísima miscelánea escogida por un poeta no español, publicada fuera de España y creada principalmente para lectores no españoles. Forrest Gander ha elegido un pequeño grupo de poetas españoles emergentes que, inconscientemente, despliegan una multiplicidad de estilos y procedimientos que van más allá de los límites establecidos por la identificación con una generación y un país. Los poetas incluidos en esta obra son Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador y Esther Ramón.

Forrest Gander (Barstow, 1956) interesado por la manera en cómo somos traducidos, su obra Core Samples from the World fue finalista del Premio Pulitzer y del National Book Critics Circle Award. Es autor de numerosas publicaciones de poesía, novela así como traducciones. Entre sus más recientes antologías,
se encuentran Pinholes in the Night: Essential Poems from Latin American (seleccionada por Raúl Zurita) y Panic Cure: Poems from Spain for the 21st Century. La poesía de Gander ha sido publicada en revistas literarias tanto de Estados Unidos como en el extranjero y ha sido traducida a una docena de idiomas. Sus publicaciones se pueden encontrar en Francia, México, Chile, España, Bulgaria, Japón, Alemania y Holanda. Es miembro de United States Artists Rockefeller y ha recibido la beca de The National Endowment for the Arts y de las fundaciones Guggenheim, Whiting y Howard.

Esther Ramón (Madrid, 1970) es poeta, crítica literaria, profesora de escritura creativa y doctora en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Ha escrito artículos de estética y crítica literaria para Revista de Libros, Archipiélago o Cuadernos hispanoamericanos y, entre otros, el estudio Geografía del frío, introducción al libro Poemas encadenados de Pedro Casariego Córdoba (Seix Barral, 2003), autor al que dedicó su tesis doctoral. Ha publicado los poemarios Tundra (Igitur, 2002), Reses (Trea, Premio Ojo Crítico 2008), Grisú (Trea, 2010, Sales (Amargord, 2011) y Caza con hurones (Icaria, 2013). Es coordinadora de redacción de la revista Minerva, en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, y dirige el taller La flecha y lo blanco. Taller de poesía y otras artes en la Fundación Centro de Poesía José Hierro.

Pilar Fraile Amador (Salamanca, 1975) es profesora de filosofía, además de dedicarse a la labor editorial. Fue Premio de Poesía de la Universidad de Zaragoza en 2005. Accésit de Poesía en el Certamen de Jóvenes Creadores del Ayuntamiento de Madrid en el año 2004 y 2005. Ha publicado los libros de poemas La pecera subterránea (Amargord Ediciones, 2011), El límite de la ceniza (Prensas Universitarias de Zaragoza, 2006); Y dos plaquettes: Antídoto (La República de la imaginación, Ed. Legados, Madrid 2009) y La disección de los insectos (Pánica 2, Ed. Delirio, Salamanca, 2006). Poemas suyos han sido publicados en diversas revistas como Hache, Alhucema o las electrónicas: 7de7, Pata de gallo o La dama duende. Actualmente coordina las actividades de difusión de la poesía de la asociación Indómita.

Panic Cure selects poems by “ten innovative contemporary poets from Spain” writing in Spanish. It is not a comprehensive survey of national poetry, but rather a highly personal miscellany chosen by a non- Spanish poet, published outside of Spain, and created primarily for non- Spanish readers. Forrest Gander has chosen a small group of up-and-coming poets from Spain who unselfconsciously display a multiplicity of stylistic and procedural choices beyond constraints of national and generational identifications. The poets featured in this volume are Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador, and Esther Ramón.

Forrest Gander (Barstow, 1956) concerned with the way we are revised and translated in encounters with the foreign, his book Core Samples from the World was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is author of numerous other books of poetry, novels and translations. His most recent anthologies are Pinholes in the Night: Essential Poems from Latin American (selected by Raúl Zurita) and Panic Cure: Poems from Spain for the 21st Century. Gander’s poems appear in many literary magazines in the U.S. and abroad, and have been translated into a dozen languages. His books in translation are available in France, Mexico, Chile, Spain, Bulgaria, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands. He is a United States Artists Rockefeller Fellow and has received fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim, Whiting, and Howard Foundations.

Esther Ramón (Madrid, 1970) is a poet and professor of creative writing and comparative literature at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Her work has been widely anthologized and also published in the volumes, Tundra (Montblanc: Ediciones Igitur, 2002), Reses (Gijón: Ediciones Trea, Critical Eye Award 2008), Grisú (Ediciones Trea, 2009) and Sales (Madrid: Ediciones Amargord, 2011). She is the coordinating editor of the magazine Minerva and she co-directs a Radio Circle poetry program called Definición de savia.

Pilar Fraile Amador (Salamanca, 1975) has a PhD in Philosophy from University of Oviedo and a Masters from University of Salamanca. A Professor of philosophy at Enseñanza Secundaria, she also works as an editor. In 2005, she was awarded the Poetry Prize from the University of Zaragoza. Her publications include El límite de la ceniza (Zaragoza: Prensas universitarias de Zaragoza), Larva (Amphibia Editorial) and La pecera subterránea (Madrid: Ediciones Amargord). Her work has also been collected in the homage for José Ángel Valente, Pájaros raíces (Madrid: Abada Editores), and in the anthology La república de la imaginación (Legados Ediciones). For three years, she directed events for the Association Indómita (http:// redindomita.blogspot.com) and she co-directed a poetry program on radio in Madrid.

Tercera y última sesión del ciclo con el que hemos celebrado la poesía amorosa española. En cada una de ellas, poetas y traductores han ofrecido una mirada fresca a la obra de algunos de los más destacados poetas españoles.

Federico García Lorca es considerado como el más famoso y reconocido poeta y autor teatral del siglo XX en español. Su obra poética, entre la que se encuentran el Romancero Gitano y Poeta en Nueva York, le sitúan en un lugar privilegiado de la literatura española, y sus piezas teatrales, como la reconocida trilogía Bodas de sangre, La casa de Bernarda Alba y Yerma, le han hecho ser comparado, por su influencia e importancia, con Shakespeare.

Jane Duran inició su carrera poética con la Breathe Now, Breathe (Enitharmon, 1995), que obtuvo el Forward Prize al mejor primer poemario. Su segundo libro de poemas, Silences from the Spanish Civil War apareció en 2002, también editado por Enitharmon; otro tanto sucedió con el siguiente, Coastal, en 2005, que recibió una recomendación de la “Poetry Book Society” y el premio Cholmondeley es mismo año. Su último volumen publicado data de 2010, Graceline, y también fue recomendado por la sociedad mencionada.

Gloria García Lorca nació en Nueva York, donde vivió hasta 1967. Estudió en la Universidad de Madrid y, anteriormente, en Sarah Lawrence College, graduándose en 1967. Vive y trabaja en Madrid desde el año 1973, desarrollando una extensa carrera como artista plástica y ceramista. Es co-traductora, junto a Jane Duran, de la edición en inglés de El Romancero Gitano publicada por Enitharmon en 2011.

The final event in the Mi Amor series, celebrating Spanish love poetry. In each of these events, contemporary poets and translators have taken a fresh look at some of the most important poets in the Spanish language.

Federico Garcia Lorca remains the most famous and celebrated modern poet and playwright in the Spanish language. His poetical works, including the Gypsy Ballads and Poet in New York, are landmarks in Spanish literature, and his plays, including the famous trilogy Blood Wedding, The House of Bernanda Alba and Yerma, have been compared to Shakespeare for their importance and influence.

Jane Duran’s debut collection, Breathe Now, Breathe (Enitharmon, 1995) won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Her second collection Silences from the Spanish Civil War was published in 2002 by Enitharmon, her third collection Coastal (Enitharmon, 2005) received a PBS Recommendation. She received a Cholmondeley Award in 2005. Her latest collection Graceline was published in 2010 and is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

Gloria García Lorca is the niece of Federico Garcia Lorca. Her family moved to New York during the end of the Spanish Civil War. In 1967 they returned to Spain, and since 1973 Gloria has worked as a plastic artist, specialising in installations and site specific art. She is also a ceramicist. Gloria García Lorca translated Lorca’s Gypsy Ballads with the poet Jane Duran in 2011 (Enitharmon Press).

Hay-on-Way Festival 2012 Alejandro Zambra
Alejandro Zambra (Santiago de Chile, 1975) ha publicado libros de poesía, ensayo y novelas, ampliamente traducidas; al mismo tiempo, es colaborador asiduo, escribiendo sobre literatura, en diversos medios de prensa de chilenos y en “Babelia”, suplemento cultural de El País. Actualmente es profesor de literatura de la Universidad Diego Portales. Bonsái fue galardonada con el Premio de la Crítica como la mejor novela chilena de 2006 y convertida en película con el mismo título por Cristián Giménez, estrenada en Cannes en la selección A certain regard. Alejandro Zambra fue además seleccionado entre los mejores narradores jóvenes en español por la revista Granta.

Hay-on-Way Festival 2012 Alejandro Zambra
Alejandro Zambra was born in Santiago de Chile in 1975. His has published a number poetry books, essays and novels, most of his works have been translated to other languages. He contributes with various Chilean and Spanish publications (“Babelia” from El País newspaper). At present, He teaches Literature at University of Diego Portales (Chile). Alejandro Zambra was chosen  as one the best young authors in Spanish language by Granta magazine.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) es una de las figuras literarias españolas más destacadas, cumbre del Romanticismo. Aunque murió antes de que gran parte de su obra fuese publicada, sus poemas influyeron notablemente sobre las generaciones posteriores de escritores a lo largo del siglo XX. Sus Rimas y Leyendas están consideradas entre las mejores piezas de la poesía en español

Derek Flitter, Catedrático de Estudios Hispánicos en la Universidad de Exeter, ha realizado numerosas publicaciones sobre distintos aspectos de la literatura del Romanticismo español, la poesía española del siglo XlX y de los inicios del siglo XX. En sus libros en este campo, se incluyen Spanish Romanticism and the Uses of History (2006) and Spanish Romantic Literary Theory and Criticism (2006).

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) is one of Spain’s most important literary figures, towering over theRomantic age. Although he died before the majority of his work was published, his poems greatly influenced the following generations of writers throughout the twentieth century, and his Rimas and Leyendas are considered some of the most important work in Spanish poetry.

Derek Flitter is Professor in Hispanic Studies at the University of Exeter. He has published widely on various aspects of Spanish Romantic literature, and on Spanish poetry of the nineteenth and early twentieth-century. His books on the subject include Spanish Romanticism and the Uses of History (2006) and Spanish Romantic Literary Theory and Criticism (2006).

The WriteIdea Festival is a London’s free reading festival that takes place from 12-21 November near Tower Hamlet.

“Our City” is the theme of this year’s programme. It is focused on East London. The festival starts in style with a conversation with Tony Benn on November 12 and it includes poets, politicians, presenters, philosophers, performers as well as novelists and other writers talking about their work.

The distinguished authors that will take part in the festival are: Caroline Gilfillan, Salena Godden, Adam O’Riordan, Sarah Wise Paul Willetts, Martin Knight or Rob Young, to name a few. Signed books will be available to buy!

All events are free but will be ticketed so make sure you reserve a place.

ICLL Podcast series: New Episode (in Spanish)

Round Table discussion about the life and poetry of Miguel Hernández.

Participants: Rosa Navarrro, University of Barcelona & Alan Feinstein, writer & translator.
Miguel Hernández was born in Orihuela (Alicante) in 1910. His poetry is characterised by its strong lyricism, exemplified in both his first collection of poems, Perito en lunas (1933), and in his classical sonnets such as El rayo que no cesa.

His poems cover the themes of love, death, war and injustice, themes of which he had personal and intense experience. He fought with the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War.

In prison he wrote Cancionero y romancero de ausencias (published in 1958), poems dedicated to his wife who lived in miserable conditions. He died in prison at the age of 31. (In Spanish)

Jaime Siles habla sobre su evolución poética desde 1969 hasta hoy, ilustrándola con la lectura y comentario de los poemas de diferentes épocas que considera más representativos.

Jaime Siles is an award-winning poet and critic. He is Professor of Classic Philology and has taught in various European universities. Currently, he teaches Classic Philology at the University of Valencia and is the President of the Spanish Society of Classical Studies. He also writes essays and literary criticism. Since 2005 he has written for the daily newspaper ABC. he is also a permanent member of the Royal Academy of Culture of Valencia.
