El Instituto Cervantes te invita mañana día 21 a celebrar el 25º Aniversario de la denominación de origen vinícola Rias Baixas con la presentación del libro de fotografías Rías Baixas, el vino del mar. Eva Minguez, Directora de Márketing de la DO Rias Baixas viene desde España para guiarnos en este singular viaje fotográfico por Galicia, la verde y ventosa región española situada en el extremo noroccidental, de tradición celta. La célebre sommelier Lisa O’Doherty compartirá su último viaje a las Rias Baixas y su amor por esta tierra celta.

Esta actividad está enmarcada dentro del festival La experiencia celta: Galicia y el Camino.

Se servirá un vino de Rias Baixas como complemento perfecto a esta velada.

Cetarti is completely down. Without a job or any purpose in life, he spends his days locked watching tv and smoking joints until a stranger informs him that his mother and his brother have been shot and assassinated. He travels to Lapachito, a village in ruins where his mother used to live to take charge of the bodies. There he meets Danielito and Duarte, a former military man, executor and friend of his mother’s murderer.

This is a powerful novel, constructed with the actions of these outsiders without any ethical or political lesson about torture, crime, guilt, existential emptiness or the recent history of the country. Nevertheless, these issues are present in the narration as the insects that crash  into the windscreen of the cars driven by Cetarti, Duarte and Danielito in their trips to nothingness.

Un año más el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín se une al Festival Bealtaine para celebrar, de forma activa y creativa, la llegada a la tercera edad. Hoy a las 18:00 puedes disfrutar de la comedia Nacidas para sufrir que proyectaremos en el Café Literario.

Flora, de 72 años, es una solterona de un pequeño pueblo que siempre se ha consagrado al cuidado de sus familiares más ancianos. Su única hermana murió muy joven y le dejó tres sobrinas huerfanitas de las que también tuvo que ocuparse. Las tres sobrinas crecieron y se fueron del pueblo y ahora Flora está asustada porque llega el momento en que tendrán que cuidar de ella y teme que la lleven a la residencia donde trabaja una de ellas. Su única salvación es Purita, una joven que ha estado ayudándola en los últimos años a cuidar de sus ancianos parientes, y que es la única con la que se siente en familia.

Instituto Cervantes is joining the Bealtaine Festival again this year to ‘Celebrate creativity as we age’. Today the film Nacidas para sufrir will be screened at 6pm at Café Literario.

Aunt Flora is a 70-year-old woman who has always had to care for others. She never married because she was never really interested in men, but that meant all her relatives turned to her when they needed someone to take care of them. First it was her parents, then her three nieces… When the girls grew up and left the village, she had to look after her Aunt Virtudes, also single and very long-lived. Flora uncomplainingly agreed to look after her but felt indignant that none of her nieces would consider moving back to town to lend a hand. Her nieces do what they think is sensible: they look for another woman to help Flora, paying her to live with Flora and Aunt Virtudes. This woman is Purita, an absolute saint, hard-working, submissive, obedient and quite… almost like a slave.

El Instituto Cervantes te invita a asistir a la lectura, por parte del presentador de TV irlandés Mark Cagney, de un fragmento de la obra La flaqueza del bolchevique (The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik), de Lorenzo Silva, en el edificio histórico Newman House, sede de la primera universidad católica de Irlanda.

Lorenzo Silva (Madrid, 1966) ha escrito, entre otras, las novelas La flaqueza del Bolchevique (finalista del Premio Nadal 1997) que ha sido llevada al cine por Manuel Martín Cuenca, y Carta blanca (Premio Primavera 2004). Ha publicado también libros infantiles y juveniles, además de ensayos. Es especialmente conocido por la serie policiaca protagonizada por los investigadores Bevilacqua y Chamorro. En 2012 le fue concedido el Premio Planeta de Novela a su último trabajo, La Marca del meridiano. Su obra ha sido traducida a numerosos idiomas, como ruso, francés, alemán, italiano y griego. La flaqueza del bolchevique saldrá publicado en inglés en 2013 bajo el título The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik (Hispabooks Publishing).

Try a taste of contemporary European literature as outstanding writers from different European countries are read in English by Irish celebrities in unusual venues around St. Stephens Green. Instituto Cervantes invites you to attend the reading of a passage from The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik (La Flaqueza del Bolchevique) by Lorenzo Silva, in voice of Irish TV presenter Mark Cagney, at the historic building of Newman House, home of the first Catholic University inIreland.

Lorenzo Silva (Madrid, Spain, 1966) is author of novels such as La Flaqueza del Bolchevique which was shortlisted for the Nadal Award in 1997, and adapted for the cinema by Manuel Martín Cuenca, and Carta Blanca which won the Primavera Award in 2004. He has also published books for children and young adults, as well as essays. He is specially known for the crime series starring detectives Bevilacqua and Chamorro. In 2012, he was awarded the Spain’s Literary Planeta Prize for his last book, La Marca del meridiano. His books have been translated into numerous languages such as Russian, French, German, Italian and Greek. The English translation of La flaqueza del bolchevique, “The Faint-Hearted Bolshevik”, will be released in 2013 by Hispabooks Publishing.

Durante el taller que se celebra en el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín esta tarde, dará a conocer uno de los vinos más de moda en EEUU y su cepa principal: Albariño.

En este seminario de 60 minutos de duración se degustarán 6 vinos de Rias Baixas.

Hoy continuamos con el ciclo de cine: 10 años haciendo reir, cantar, bailar y …. jugar al fútbol en el que te ofreceremos varias de las películas españolas más populares de los últimos años. La película de esta tarde es El crimen de una novia. Esta vez contaremos con la presencia no solamente del productor Tomás Cimadevilla sino que también asistirá Lola Guerrero, directora de la película y el actor Fernándo Rodríguez. Cuenta los hechos reales que inspiraron a Lorca para escribir su “Bodas de sangre”, a través de la mirada de María Botto, actriz a la que Rafael Amargo propone participar en el papel de novia en un montaje, mezcla de teatro y danza, sobre la conocida obra del poeta y dramaturgo español. Lo que en un principio empieza como un simple interés de una actriz por conocer y entender su personaje, termina convirtiéndose en un viaje iniciático en busca de la realidad de unos hechos, el crimen de Níjar, ocurrido el 22 de julio de 1928 en un pequeño pueblo almeriense. En ese viaje ambos personajes se sumergirán en una investigación que permitirá conocer un poco más a Lorca, a descubrir a la escritora almeriense Carmen de Burgos y a desgranar el suceso ocurrido en Níjar.

Today is the second session of the film series: 10 years entertaining through laughter, singing, dancing and…playing soccer with some of the most popular Spanish films of the last few years. Today’s film is El crimen de una novia and it will be presented by director Lola Guerrero, the actor Fernando Rodríguez and the producer Tomás Cimadevilla. The screening will be at 6pm at Café Literario.

This film recounts the true events that inspired Lorca to write “Bodas de sangre” (Blood wedding) seen through the eyes of María Botto. Rafael Amargo asks this actress to play the part of the bride in the production, a mixture of theatre and dance, based on the work of the Spanish poet and playwright. What starts out as simply the interest of an actress to get to know and understand her character becomes a journey of initiation in search of the reality behind the events, the Nijar crime that took place on 22 July 1928 in a small village in Almeria.

La España Celta llega a Irlanda. Este año, Dublín acoge un variopinto programa de actividades que dan a conocer lo mejor de Galicia y su legado celta a través de su gastronomía, moda, cultura y turismo. Desde catas de vino hasta una conferencia sobre moda, el Instituto Cervantes, la Oficina Comercial de la Embajada de España y la Oficina de Turismo te invitan a un apasionante viaje cuyo destino final es el Camino de Santiago.

La primera de las actividades programadas es hoy en el Café Literario a la 13:oo pm. La célebre periodista gastronómica británica Claudia Roden  presentará su libro Food of Spain (Penguin Books) y conducirá al público irlandés a través de los secretos y placeres de la comida gallega, desde los mariscos hasta la tarta de Santiago.

Claudia Roden nació y se crió en El Cairo. Tras finalizar sus estudios en París se trasladó a Londres para estudiar arte. Con la publicación de su best seller A book of Middle Easter Food revolucionó la actitud del mundo occidental hacia las comida de Oriente Medio. Ha publicado otros diez libros, entre ellos el clásico The book of Jewish Food, con los que ha obtenido numerosos premios.

Celtic Spain comes to Ireland. This year, Dublin will host a wide range of events all highlighting the best of Galicia and its Celtic ancestry through their food, wine, fashion, culture and tourism. From wine tastings to a fashion talk, Instituto Cervantes, the Trade Section of the Spanish Embassy and the Tourism Office gives you every reason to join us on a very interesting journey to the final destination at St. James Way.

The first of this series of events  will be today at 1pm at Café Literario. The coveted British food writer, author of the book The Food of  Spain (PenguinBooks), will lead an Irish audience on the secrets and pleasures of the Galician food, from seafood to St James’s cake.

Claudia Roden was born and brought up in Cairo. She finished her education in Paris and later studied art in London. With the publication of her bestselling A book of Middle Easter Food in 1968, she revolutionized Western attitudes to the cuisines of the Middle East. She as written ten other books, which have won her many awards, including the classic The Book of Jewish Food.

Galician refreshments will be served compliment of: Martin Codax, Vitivinícola do Ribeiro SCG, Portomuinos, San Simón DOP,Arzúa DOP.

Si hoy quieres escuchar buena música no tienes más que venir esta tarde al concierto que el coro de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid nos ofrece a las 7.30pm en el Café Literario.

El Coro de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid comienza su andadura en noviembre de 1990. La dirección musical corre a cargo de Nuria S. Fernández Herranz, y la gestión y coordinación de Félix Márquez.

A lo largo de su historia, ha colaborado en la recuperación del Patrimonio Musical Español con la interpretación de obras de Jaume Casellas (1690-1764) y Antonio Soler (1729-1783), y ha estrenado numerosas obras de compositores contemporáneos españoles como Javier Busto, Alicia Santos, Asís Márquez y Albert Alcaraz. El Coro UC3M ha realizado giras por Portugal, Holanda, Cuba y Hungría. Ha obtenido diversos galardones en concursos nacionales entre los que cabe destacar su reciente Premio “Ciudad de Torrevieja 2012” en el Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonía de dicha localidad.

En 2012 presenta una ecléctica selección de programas entre los que destacan Dixit Dominus yCoronation Anthems de Haendel, la Misa de Coronación de Mozart y el espectáculo escénico-coral EnAmorArte de Lorca basado en textos del autor granadino puestos en música por compositores españoles contemporáneos.

En estos días, el Coro se encuentra en Dublín realizando un Taller de  Interpretación con el director y compositor Michael McGlynn. No queríamos dejar pasar la ocasión de mostrar parte de la creación musical para coro de compositores españoles y, por ello, les ofrecemos este concierto dedicado a la música española.

If you want to listen to some good music you can enjoy today a concert by the Choir from the Carlos III University of Madrid. This event will be at 7.30pm at Café Literario.

The Choir from the Carlos III University of Madrid was set up in November 1990. Nuria S. Fernández Herranz is in charge of their musical direction, while Félix Márquez is responsible for their management.

Throughout its career, the choir´s interpretation of the works of Jaume Casellas (1690-1764) and Antonio Soler (1729-1783) has contributed to the preservation of Spanish musical heritage, and it has showcased numerous works of contemporary Spanish composers such as Javier Busto, Alicia Santos, Asís Márquez y Albert Alcaraz. The UC3M choir has toured Portugal, Holland, Cuba and Hungry and has received numerous awards in national competitions. The most outstanding award they have received to date is the recent honour, ‘City of Torrevieja 2012’, in the International Competition of Habaneras and Polifany.

In 2012 the choir presented an eclectic range of programs, most notably Dixit Dominus and Handel´s Coronation Anthems, The Coronation Mass by Mozart and the spectacular choral performance EnAmorArte de Lorca, based on texts by the author from Granada, set to music by contemporary Spanish composers.

The choir is currently in Dublin taking part in a performance workshop with the director and composer Michael McGlynn. To mark this occasion and demonstrate the musical achievements of Spanish choral composers, we invite you to attend a concert dedicated to Spanish music by the UC3M choir.

Esta frase, sin duda una de las más duras que puede decirnos alguien en nuestra vida, precipita todos los acontecimientos que se cuentan en esta comedia musical que habla del amor, del sexo, de la amistad y sobre todo de la mentira.

El 23 de abril es una fecha simbólica para el mundo literario. En 1616, ese mismo día, murieron Cervantes, Shakespeare e Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. El Día Internacional del Libro, cada 23 de abril, es la fecha establecida por la UNESCO para la promoción de la lectura y la edición, que se celebra desde 1995. En Cataluña además, coincide con la festividad de Sant Jordi, en la que es tradición que los hombres regalen una rosa a las mujeres y ellas les correspondan con un libro, en recuerdo a la leyenda de Sant Jordi y el dragón.

Este año el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín rinde tributo a nuestro autor por excelencia, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, con un recital abierto a los alumnos del centro y con una doble conferencia a cargo de los hispanistas Grace Magnier y Diego Martínez Torrón, en la que se destacarán los rasgos que han convertido la literatura cervantina en una riqueza universal y específicamente su influencia en el ámbito anglosajón. Además, tendremos un mercadillo de libros en la Biblioteca.

Today we celebrate the International Day of the book with a double programme that you cannot miss: first you will have the chance to participate in a recital.  Afterwards there will be a talk to pay tribute to the most universal Spanish writer: Miguel de Cervantes. The events will start at 6pm at Café Literario.

The 23rd of April is a symbolic date in the literary world. On this day in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. Since 1995, on the 23rd of April each year, World Book Day has been organised by UNESCO to celebrate reading and publishing. In Catalonia, this coincides with the festival of ´Sant Jordi’ or Saint George. It is a traditional custom on this day for men to give women a rose and receive a book in return, which is symbolic of the legend of Saint George and the dragon.

This year at the Cervantes Institute in Dublin, in tribute to the esteemed Spanish author, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, we are holding a recital  that is open to students of the centre, as well as a double lecture by hispanists Grace Magnier and Diego Martínez Torrón, featuring the singularities which make the Cervantes’ literature a universal treasure, and specifically his influence on the English-Speaking world. We will also be setting up a book shop in the library.

Es este un texto breve, intenso y emotivo, que cuenta la historia de una niña que creció al lado de su madre biológica y de su pareja, también mujer. Para no herir la sensibilidad de su familia, la autora ha preferido convertir este texto en una novela, pero ahí está su experiencia real, que arranca el día de la boda de sus ‘madres’ y luego camina hacia atrás en el tiempo, hasta llegar al día que que las dos mujeres se conocieron y la madre de Muriel decidió hablar con su marido para contarle la nueva experiencia y despedirse de él.

Despedimos el III ciclo de cine chileno con la proyección a las 18:00 en el Café Literario de la película La luna en el espejo de Silvio Caiozzi.

En el mágico puerto de Valparaíso, un viejo y enfermo marino, don Arnaldo, vive encerrado junto a su hijo, El Gordo. Desde su cama controla todos los movimientos de la casa a través de los espejos que cuelgan de las paredes de su dormitorio. Lucrecia, es la vecina, una viuda algo mayor. El Gordo y Lucrecia se desean, se buscan y se esconden de don Arnaldo. Varios actos de rebeldía provocan a don Arnaldo, quien juega su última carta para recuperar el control del hijo.

This evening we say good bye to the 3rd Chilean Cinema Season. The name of the last film is  La luna en el espejo by Silvio Caiozzi and it will screen at Café Literario at 6pm.

In the mystic port of Valparaiso, an elderly ailing sailor, Don Arnaldo, lives bedridden with his son, nicknamed Fatty. From his bed he controls every movement in the apartment through the mirrors hung on his bedroom walls. Lucrecia is the middle aged widow living next door. Fatty and Lucrecia desire and seek each other while hiding from Don Arnaldo. Their rebellious behaviour forces Don Arnaldo to take desperate measures to regain his paternal authority over his son.

Banda formada en el trascurso del año 2012. Vienen desde Santiago de Compostela a presentar su nuevo trabajo. Sus influencias van desde el blues más clásico de artistas como Howlin Wolf, Muddy waters, Hound Dog Taylor hasta el soul de Aretha Franklin, Etta James o Sam Cooke, pasando por elcountry de Johnny Cash. Sin olvidar a los grandes clásicos del rock y el rock and roll como Bob dylan, los Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley o Neil young del que toman prestado el psicodélico Down by the river. Otras de sus potentes influencias son dos de los nuevos talentos del rockabilly y el rock & roll actual, considerados ya clásicos modernos, Imelda May y los tres hermanos que forman Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. A pesar de ser un grupo influenciado sobre todo por la música americana, también abordan clásicos en castellano como el famoso Chan chan, La Paloma o La Llorona de la gran Chavela Vargas.

Café Literario will be full of  good music today as the band The Lákazans are visiting us with the best of its repertoire. The concert will start at 7.30pm and the entrance is free although donatiosn will be accepted.

Formed in 2012, the band from Santiago de Compostela  has come to perform their new music. Their influences range from classic blues artists such as Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Hound Dog Taylor, to the soul music of Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Sam Cooke, and the country sound of Johnny Cash. Not forgetting the great classic rock and roll music of the likes of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Neil Young, from whom they borrowed the psychedelic song Down by the River. Other strong influences come from two major new talents of rockabilly and contemporary rock and roll, already considered to be modern classics – Imelda May and the three brothers that make up the group Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. Besides being a group influenced by American music, they also take inspiration from classic Spanish artists like the famous Chan Chan, and particularly the songs Paloma Negra (Black Dove) and La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) from the great Chavela Vargas.
