Todos los años se celebra en Estados Unidos el “Mes de la Herencia Hispánica” (National Heritage Month), desde el 15 de septiembre hasta el 15 de octubre.

Durante ese mes se conmemoran las historias, culturas y contribuciones de los ciudadanos americanos cuyos antepasados llegaron a aquellas tierras procedentes de España, México, el Caribe y América Central y del Sur.

No en vano, Estados Unidos es el segundo país en el mundo con mayor número de hablantes de español.

el día 15 de septiembre es significativo porque ese día se celebra el aniversario de la independencia de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. México y Chile celebran sus día de la independencia el 16 y el 18 de septiembre respectivamente.

Del mismo modo, el Día de Colón,  Día de la Raza, o Día de la Hispanidad, que se celebra rl 12 de octubre, cae también en este período de 30 días.

Each year, the United States observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Not in vain, United States of América is the second country in the world with the largest number of Spanish speakers.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Helena and Nora are a Ukulele duet that plays a nice blend of Mexican, Hawaiian and Old American Ditties from times long gone.  It was the love for this little instrument from Hawaii that brought them together.

Desde el 25 de junio hasta el 31 de agosto, los organizadores de la Noche Internacional del Libro 2012 (World Book Night 2012) recogieron las opiniones de los lectores para saber cuáles son los 10 libros preferidos del público en Irlanda y en Reino Unido.

Más de 6000 personas selecconaron más de 8000 títulos. Ahora, los 100 más votados se muestran en una lista sobre la que se puede seguir votando . De entre todos ellos, el comité de selección elegirá finalmente los 25 títulos que serán repartidos durante la Noche del Libro. El año pasado se entregaron nada más y nada menos que 40000 copias de cada uno de los títulos.

Entre todos ellos, solo había un título escrito originalmente en español. ¿Adivinas cuál?

Este año, entre los cien seleccionados hasta ahora, hay dos de autores hispanos. ¿Te animas a participar?

From 25 June to 31 August 2011 WBN 2012 organizers asked readers to nominate the 10 books they most love to read, give and share. Over 6,000 people nominated more than 8,000 titles and the top 100 displayed on their website will be used to inform the choice of the editorial selection committee who will be selecting the WBN 2012 titles

But WBN still want readers to tell them their favourite books and a constantly evolving top 100 can be seen here.

El Instituto Cervantes de Dublín, de 6 a 10 de la noche, te ofrece la posibilidad de visitar la exposición de fotografías de Marín (1908-1940), escuchar música en vivo, tomar una copa de vino, comprar alguno de nuestros libros de autores españoles e hispanoamericanos en español a muy buenos precios, y algunas otras sorpresas.

Dublin Culture Night 2011 will be open to everyone the 23rd of September with 156 venues and organisations taking part in the biggest and most diverse ever Culture Night event in Ireland.

Instituto Cervantes will be open from 6 to 10pm.

Join us for the exhibition Marín: Photographs 1908-1940, accompanied by live music and food to set your cultural taste buds tickling. Book sale of new and second-hand books at very good prices.

Luis Ramón Marín, a figure now regarded as the world’s first photojournalist, is currently represented in the Instituto Cervantes Dublin by a handful of his most striking photographs.

His large body of work, including over 18,000 negatives, was hidden by his wife Eduarda Plá in a cavity behind her kitchen wall for several decades after the Spanish Civil War, for fear they would be destroyed due to their political content.

Desde que Kate O’ Brien viniera hacia mediados de 1922 por primera vez a Portugalete para trabajar como institutriz para los hijos de la familia Areilza, se puede afirmar que inició una intensa relación con nuestro país que no sólo no perduraría con el paso del tiempo sino que se transformó en una verdadera pasión.

En sus comienzos como novelista sus dos primeras obras están ambientadas en su ciudad natal, Limerick, pero es a lo largo de la toda la década de los treinta y después cuando España se convirtió en su inspiración literaria y existencial llegándole a proporcionar un caudal de inagotables recursos que se reflejaría en dos de sus novelas más conocidas, Mary Lavelle (1936; traducida al español como Pasiones rotas) y Esa Dama (1946), un libro de viajes Adiós España (1937) y una de las mejores biografías de la lengua inglesa de la mujer que más admiró, Santa Teresa, titulada Teresa de Ávila (1951).

México nos acompaña siempre, pero especialmente este mes de septiembre con el Día de la Independencia de México que se celebra el día 16.

El Instituto Cervantes contará con dos actividades culturales relacionadas con ese país: un seminario sobre el mezcal el día 14 y una representación escénica sobre Frida Kahlo el día 15.

México también está representado en nuestra biblioteca de forma permanente a través de su música, su literatura, su cine… Acércate a conocer un poco mejor este maravilloso país, el que tiene el mayor número de hablantes de español en el mundo.

Mexico will always be with us, and even more so throughout September, with Mexican Independence Day on the 16th of this month.

Instituto Cervantes will celebrate with two cultural activities: a seminar on the traditional alcoholic spirit mezcal on the 14th, and a performance based on Frida Kahlo on the 15th.

Cristina Fernández Cubas nació en Arenys de Mar, Barcelona en 1945. Estudió Derecho y Periodismo en la ciudad condal y desde muy joven ejerció como periodista.

Vivió durante dos años en Sudamérica y durante diez meses en El Cairo, donde estudió árabe. Allí recibió la carta de la editorial Tusquets que le anunciaba su intención de publicar, por primera vez, sus cuentos. De esta forma, “Mi hermana Elba” vio la luz en octubre de 1980.

Fernández Cubas utiliza elementos de la narración fantástica para desarrollar sus historias. Precisamente sobre literatura fantástica versará su intervención en el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín el próximo 18 de octubre. En septiembre, ella es nuestra autora del mes.

Cristina Fernández Cubas was born in Arenys de Mar, Spain, in 1945. She studied Law and Journalism in Barcelona, and began her career as a journalist at an early age.

She lived in South America for two years, and spent a further ten months in Cairo, where she studied Arabic. It was there that she received a letter from Tusquets publishing house announcing their desire to publish her short stories for the first time. And thus, “Mi hermana Elba” was published in October of 1980.

Fernández Cubas utilises elements of fantasy narration in the development of her storylines. We will be delighted to welcome Cristina Ferández Cubas in discussion on fantasy literature, here in Instituto Cervantes, this coming 18th October. Throughout September, she is our author of the month
