The winners of the Premio Valle Inclán for translation from Spanish have been announced.

The winning and commended titles were presented at the Society of Authors Translation Prizes gala, held on 17 February 2016 at Europe House. Read the full press release

The Premio Valle Inclán is generously sponsored by the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Embassy of Spain in London, the Instituto Cervantes in London and Arts Council England.

The winner of the Premio Valle Inclán for translation from Spanish is Anne McLean for her translation of Outlaws by Javier Cercas (Bloomsbury). Judges John King and Jason Wilson said:

Anne McLean’s splendid, convincing translation of Javier Cercas’s compelling portrait of a teenage hoodlum, in post-Franco Spain, conveys with great subtlety and accuracy the shifting narrations and narrative tempo, the nuances of voice and of class difference and the evocations of urban landscapes and communities in the process of rapid change.

 Anne McLean has translated Latin-American and Spanish novels, short stories, memoirs and other writings from authors including Héctor Abad, Julio Cortázar and Juan Gabriel Vásquez. She has twice won the independent Foreign Fiction Prize and was awarded the Spanish Cross of the Order of Civil Merit in recognition of her contribution to making Spanish literature known to a wider public.

 Margaret Jull Costa was commended for her translation of Tristana by Benito Pérez Galdós (New York Review Books).

The judges said:

‘An excellent, modernising translation of a light, slightly mocking novel – a classic – once filmed by Buñuel.’

Margaret Jull Costa, OBE has been a translator of Spanish and Portuguese fiction and poetry for over twenty-seven years. She has translated many of the greats of Spanish and Portuguese literature including the works of Eça de Queiroz, José Saramago, Javier Marías and Bernardo Atxaga. Her work has won the Premio Valle Inclán three times and been commended a further four.

El nuevo ciclo de guitarra clásica de Londres, Guitarrísimo, nace en homenaje a las raíces latinas de la guitarra – el instrumento nacional español por excelencia. Arranca con la actuación solista de la estrella naciente del flamenco, el joven virtuoso Manuel Valencia, que presentará una selección de sus propias composiciones como parte del London Flamenco Festival.

Manuel Valencia creció con una guitarra bajo el brazo. Estudió con su tío Fernando Terremoto, antes de unirse al grupo liderado por Gerardo Núñez, con el que se diera a conocer internacionalmente.  Un excepcional acompañante de la canción, Valencia ha enfatizado las voces de Vicente Soto ‘Sordera’, Manuel Agujetas, José Mercé, Pansequito, Aurora Vargas, Tomasa ‘La Macanita’ Juana del Pipa y Fernando Terremoto, así como voces noveles, como la de Felipa Moreno, Jesús Méndez y David Carpio.

Como solista, Manuel Valencia debutó en el Festival de Jerez, que pavimentó el camino hacia apariciones posteriores como la Bienal de Sevilla, el Festival de la Mistela, Mont de Marsan y Suma Flamenca. En 2014 ganó el premio Giraldillo a Artista Revelación en la Bienal de Sevilla, «por sus contribuciones inéditas al toque tradicional». Su primer disco como solista saldrá publicado en breve.

MANUEL VALENCIA IN CONCERT, 24 FEBRUARY 2016 AT 7:30PM

London’s new guitar classical series, guitarrísimo, celebrates the Latin roots of the guitar – Spain’s national instrument par excellence – launching with a solo concert by exciting young virtuoso and rising flamenco star, Manuel Valencia, performing a selection of his own compositions, as part of the London Flamenco Festival.

Manuel Valencia grew up with a guitar under his arm. He studied with his uncle, Fernando Terremoto, before being recruited by Gerardo Núñez to join his ensemble, with whom he has toured internationally. A great song accompanist, Valencia has underpinned the voices of Vicente Soto ‘Sordera’, Manuel Agujetas, José Mercé, Pansequito, Aurora Vargas, Tomasa ‘La Macanita’ Juana del Pipa, Fernando Terremoto as well as newer voices like Felipa Moreno, Jesús Méndez and David Carpio. As a concert soloist he made his debut in 2010 at the Festival of Jerez, which paved the way for subsequent appearances at the Seville Biennial, the Festival de la Mistela, Mont de Marsan and Suma Flamenca. In 2014 he won the ‘Revelation Giraldillo’ of the Bienal de Sevilla “for his original contributions to traditional toque”. His first solo album is shortly due for release.

• La Embajada de España en Londres organiza la mesa redonda “Science Policy in the 20^th-Century in Spain, Italy and Argentina” como celebración del lanzamiento del libro “Science Policies and Twentieth Century Dictatorships” el próximo 4 de febrero.
• El libro es fruto de la colaboración entre científicos británicos y españoles. Cuatro de los autores presentarán sus estudios sobre cómo se relaciona la comunidad científica con los gobiernos en tiempos de democracia y de dictadura.

La mesa redonda “Science Policy in the 20^th-Century in Spain, Italy and Argentina” contará con las intervenciones del catedrático de Estudios de Política Científica Brian Balmer de la University College London, la catedrática de Lógica y Filosofía de la Ciencia Amparo Gómez-Rodríguez y el profesor de Historia de la Educación Antonio Canales-Serrano, ambos de la Universidad de La Laguna, así como con el profesor de Historia de la Ciencia Francisco González Redondo de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Los ponentes tratarán las políticas científicas de tres países (España, Italia y Argentina) que experimentaron una considerable agitación política durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Se prestará especial atención a España, por una parte, por ser uno de los primeros países en aplicar el “contrato social para la ciencia” durante los años que constituyeron la Edad de Plata de la cultura española, por la convergencia con Europa tras décadas de decadencia y aislamiento; y, por otra parte, por el impacto que la Guerra Civil española tuvo en el sistema científico y en su posterior reconstrucción.

Este evento es el primer acto científico del programa “Ciencia en la Embajada” organizado por la Oficina para asuntos culturales y científicos de la Embajada de España en Londres y la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT). El acto cuenta con la participación del Instituto Cervantes, el departamento de Science and Technology Studies de University College London, la Sociedad de Científicos Españoles en el Reino Unido (SRUK/CERU) y la UCLU Spanish & Latin American Society.

• The Spanish Embassy in London organises the roundtable “Science Policy in the 20th Century in Spain, Italy and Argentina” to celebrate the launch of the book “Science Policies and Twentieth Century Dictatorships”, on 4^th
• The book is a result of collaboration between British and Spanish scientists. Four of the authors will show their studies about the relationships between scientific communities and governments during times of democracy and dictatorships.

Four scientists will participate in the roundtable “Science Policy in the 20th Century in Spain, Italy and Argentina”: Prof Brian Balmer, Professor in Science Policy Studies in University College London (UCL); Prof Amparo Gómez-Rodríguez, Professor in Logic and Phylosophy of Science, and Dr Antonio Canales-Serrano, Lecturer in History of Education, both from Universidad de La Laguna; and Dr Francisco A González-Redondo, Senior Lecturer in History of Science in Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Talks will delve in science policies in three countries—Spain, Italy and Argentina—that each experienced considerable political upheaval in the 20^th Century. Special attention will be placed in Spain, because it was one of the first countries to successfully apply the so-called ‘social contract’ for science, a concept similar to the Haldane Principle in the UK, during the first half of the 20^th Century. The Spanish convergence with Europe, after decades of isolation and decline, embodied the Silver Age for Spain. However, the Spanish Civil War would have a significant impact on the science system and its subsequent rebuilding.

This is the first event of the scientific programme “Science at the Embassy” organized by the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Spanish Embassy in London and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). It also has the collaboration of Instituto Cervantes, the Department of Science and Technology Studies from UCL, the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) and UCLU Spanish & Latin American Society.

Ahora tienes la oportunidad de hacerlo: nuestro Club de conversación está abierto a cualquier persona interesada en mejorar sus destrezas de conversación con nativos en situaciones reales.
Se abordan temas diferentes en cada sesión y se adaptan a los intereses de los participantes.
