Premio Iberoamericano de Arte 2016 / Ibero-American Arts Award: Call For Entries
Las embajadas de los países latinoamericanos, España y Portugal (ACALASP) y People’s Palace Projects (Universidad Queen Mary de Londres), en colaboración con Itaú Unibanco, se complacen de presentar el primer Premio Iberoamericano de Arte. En una conexión sin precedentes entre las culturas británica y latina, esta exposición/premio invita a todos los artistas residentes en el Reino Unido a explorar el concepto de utopía en las culturas iberoamericanas.
Tras una preselección inicial llevada a cabo por el comité curador de la organización, hasta 30 obras de arte serán expuestas durante tres semanas en la embajada de Brasil. Un jurado especial seleccionará las ganadoras.
Los interesados pueden consultar los detalles en la página web oficial del certamen. Las obras presentadas, que pueden consistir en cuadros, escultura, fotografía o grabados, se aceptarán siempre que sean obra de artistas que residan y trabajen en el Reino Unido, y sean mayores de 16 años.
¡Te animamos a tomar parte en este certamen! Puedes hacerlo de varias maneras:
- Enviando tu propio trabajo si tienes inclinación artística;
- Compartiendo esta oportunidad con amigos o conocidos que la tengan (certamen abierto al público);
- Asistiendo a la exposición de las obras finalistas en noviembre y votando a tu favorita.
Los premios consisten en:
- Primer premio £3.000;
- Segundo premio £1.000;
- Premio elección popular £1.000.
La exposición tendrá lugar en la Embajada de Brasil a partir del 16 de noviembre de 2016.

The Embassies of Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal (ACALASP), People’s Palace Projects (Queen Mary University of London) in collaboration with Itaú Unibanco are delighted to launch the first ever ‘Ibero-American Arts Award’. In an unprecedented exchange between the UK and Latin cultures, the exhibition and award invites all UK-based artists to explore the concept of Utopia in Ibero-American cultures.
Following a pre-selection process conducted by the curatorial committee, up to 30 artworks will go on display for three weeks at the Embassy of Brazil. A special jury will judge the final selection.
Further information is available on the contest website. Submissions for the competition, which may include paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and prints, are welcome on behalf of artists living and working in the UK. Participants must be aged 16 or over.
We encourage you to participate in this contest! There are several ways in which you can get involved:
- Applying if you have an artistic vein;
- Sharing this opportunity with any friends who do (as the contest is open to the public!);
- Attending the exhibition of the finalist artworks in November to vote for your favourite.
The prizes are:
- 1st Prize £3,000;
- 2nd Prize £1,000;
- People’s Choice Prize £1,000.
The exhibition will take part at the Embassy of Brazil in London from 16 November 2016.

El East End Film Festival presenta «Dead slow ahead» / The East End Film Festival Presents Dead Slow Ahead
Este año el East End Film Festival presenta un ejemplo de la nueva forma de entender el cine: «Dead slow ahead«, un documental premiado en el Locarno International Film Festival, un exponente del mejor y más experimental nuevo formato internacional, de dirección y producción españolas.
El próximo domingo 26 de junio y en colaboración con el Open City Documentary Festival, «Dead slow ahead» se emitirá en el Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Londres. Todavía quedan entradas – la organización recomienda reservar por adelantado.
This year, London’s East End Film Festival presents some innovative paths in filmmaking. An example: Dead Slow Ahead, a documentary turned horror science fiction, awarded at the Locarno International Film Festival.
Dead Slow Ahead is an edgy take on storytelling, directed and produced by Spanish professionals. This coming Sunday 26 June, in collaboration with Open City Documentary Festival, Dead Slow Ahead will screen at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
Interested? There are still a few tickets available. Organizers recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
Premio Valle Inclán: Winners Announced
The winners of the Premio Valle Inclán for translation from Spanish have been announced.
The winning and commended titles were presented at the Society of Authors Translation Prizes gala, held on 17 February 2016 at Europe House. Read the full press release
The Premio Valle Inclán is generously sponsored by the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Embassy of Spain in London, the Instituto Cervantes in London and Arts Council England.
The winner of the Premio Valle Inclán for translation from Spanish is Anne McLean for her translation of Outlaws by Javier Cercas (Bloomsbury). Judges John King and Jason Wilson said:
Anne McLean’s splendid, convincing translation of Javier Cercas’s compelling portrait of a teenage hoodlum, in post-Franco Spain, conveys with great subtlety and accuracy the shifting narrations and narrative tempo, the nuances of voice and of class difference and the evocations of urban landscapes and communities in the process of rapid change.
Anne McLean has translated Latin-American and Spanish novels, short stories, memoirs and other writings from authors including Héctor Abad, Julio Cortázar and Juan Gabriel Vásquez. She has twice won the independent Foreign Fiction Prize and was awarded the Spanish Cross of the Order of Civil Merit in recognition of her contribution to making Spanish literature known to a wider public.
Margaret Jull Costa was commended for her translation of Tristana by Benito Pérez Galdós (New York Review Books).
The judges said:
‘An excellent, modernising translation of a light, slightly mocking novel – a classic – once filmed by Buñuel.’
Margaret Jull Costa, OBE has been a translator of Spanish and Portuguese fiction and poetry for over twenty-seven years. She has translated many of the greats of Spanish and Portuguese literature including the works of Eça de Queiroz, José Saramago, Javier Marías and Bernardo Atxaga. Her work has won the Premio Valle Inclán three times and been commended a further four.

El 23 de abril es la fecha que la UNESCO, a propuesta de la Federación del Gremio de Editores de España, estableció como “Día Mundial del Libro y del Derecho de Autor” por coincidir con el aniversario de la muerte, en 1616, de Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. En España la celebración del Día del Libro es una tradición y una fiesta de la Cultura en la que tiene lugar la entrega anual del Premio Cervantes.

Launched in 1995 to promote reading, publishing and copyright, World Book and Copyright Day will, once again, take place on 23 April. With the help of the Federation of Publishers’ Guild of Spain, UNESCO established this day to coincide with the anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. In Spain, celebrating World Book Day has become a tradition, and this year’s celebration will see the beloved annual presentation of the Miguel de Cervantes prize.

Conferencia anual «Sebald» de traducción literaria: Premio Valle Inclán
La conferencia anual Sebald de traducción literaria, a cargo de Ali Smith, es precedida por la presentación de los Premios de traducción 2010. Seis reconocidos premios de traducción, de larga tradición, son concedidos por la traducción de obras de ficción, poesía y ensayo, a partir de las originales en árabe, francés, alemán, italiano, español y hebreo.
En colaboración con el Centro Británico para la Traducción Litteraria y la Sociedad de Autores; con el apoyo de la Oficina Cultural de la Embajada de España en Reino Unido.

Premios literarios
El pasado 24 de Noviembre la escritora Ana María Matute recibió el premio Cervantes, el galardón más prestigioso de las letras en lengua española. Se trata de la tercera mujer distinguida con este galardón en los 35 años de vida del premio. La autora, de 85 años, ha sido galardonada por su obra compuesta por 12 novelas y varios volúmenes de cuentos, ahora reunidos en La puerta de la Luna, desde los primeros textos de 1947 hasta 1998.

Por otra parte, el pasado 7 de Octubre el escritor hispano-peruano Mario Vargas Llosa fue galardonado con el premio Nobel de literatura, el premio más prestigioso de las letras universales. El escritor ha volado hoy a Estocolmo donde el próximo 10 de Diciembre recibirá el premio. El diario El País recoge hoy en sus páginas un sumario de la entrevista que ha concedido a los periodistas a su llegada a la capital.
