Edwin Williamson, M.A., Ph.D., es profesor titular de la “Cátedra Rey Alfonso XIII de Estudios Hispánicos” en la Universidad de Oxford y Fellow de Exeter College, Oxford. Fue titular de la “Cátedra Forbes de Estudios Hispánicos” en la Universidad de Edimburgo, profesor en Birkbeck College, Universidad de Londres, y en Trinity College, Dublin. Ha sido profesor visitante en las universidades de Stanford, Cornell, Denver-Colorado, y en la Universidad de  São Paulo, Brasil. Sus publicaciones reflejan su interés tanto por América Latina como por la España del Siglo de Oro. Además de numerosos artículos, es autor de The Half-way House of Fiction: Don Quixote and Arthurian Romance (Oxford University Press, 1984), traducido al español con prólogo de Mario Vargas Llosa (Taurus, 1991); The Penguin History of Latin America (2009), que ha sido traducido al español (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2014) y al portugués; y de la biografía Borges: A Life (2004), también publicado por Penguin, que ha sido traducido a español (Seix Barral, 2006) y a otras seis lenguas. Ha sido editor de los siguientes volúmenes: Cervantes and the Modernists (1991), Cervantes: Essays in Memory of E.C. Riley, con Jeremy Robbins (2005), Autoridad y poder en el Siglo de Oro, con Ignacio Arellano y Christoph Strosetzki (2009), La autoridad política y el poder de las letras en el  Siglo de Oro, con Jesús María Usunáriz (2013), The Cambridge Companion to Jorge Luis Borges (2013).

Professor Edwin Williamson, M.A., Ph.D., holds the King Alfonso XIII Chair of Spanish Studies at the University of Oxford and is Professorial Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford.  He previously held the Forbes Chair of Hispanic Studies in the University of Edinburgh and posts at Birkbeck College, University of London, and Trinity College, Dublin. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford, Cornell and the University of São Paulo, Brazil, as well as lecturing widely in Spain, Latin America, the USA, and Europe. His teaching and publications reflect his interest in both Latin America and early-modern Spain. In addition to numerous articles, he is the author of The Half-way House of Fiction: Don Quixote and Arthurian Romance (Oxford University Press, 1984), translated into Spanish with a  prologue by Mario Vargas Llosa; The Penguin History of Latin America (2009), which has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese, and the biography, Borges: A Life (2004), also published by Penguin, which has been translated into Spanish and six languages. El II Festival de Teatro Español en Londres presenta ‘En un lugar del Quijote’ de la Compañía Ron-Lalá. Mientras Miguel de Cervantes escribe su opus magnus, el noble caballero de nombre Alonso Quijano, recrea su increíble aventura como caballero andante. Ron Lalá presenta así su personal versión de Don Quijote de La Mancha. A través de esta gran aventura teatral, donde conviven, la música en directo y la palabra hablada, los espectadores experimentarán el humor, la magia, la tristeza, la resistencia y profundidad de esta inmortal obra literaria. Tras la matinée de los días 24 y 25 habrá una mesa redonda con los actores que, además, impartirán tres talleres los días 23, 24 y 25 de mayo.

Somewhere in the Quixote

The 2nd Festival of Spanish Theatre in London presents ‘Somewhere in the Quixote’ by Ron Lalá Company. The story moves us to an imaginary library. While Miguel de Cervantes is writing his opus magnus, a nobleman by the name of Alonso Quijano recreates his incredible adventures as a knight errant. Ron Lalá presents its own version of Don Quixote of La Mancha. Through this great theatrical adventure, combining live music and the spoken word, the audience will experience the humour, magic, sadness, defiance and depth of this enduring literary work. After the afternoon performances on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 there will be a post-show discussion with the actors. As well as the play, there will be three workshops during the mornings of 23, 24 and 25 May.

La 4ª edición del “Fin de semana de primavera” acercará el más reciente cine español a la audiencia londinense. La programación incluirá Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados, dirigida por David Trueba y ganadora de la última edición de los Goya, así como 15 años y un día (Gracia Querejeta), Petit indi (Marc Recha), Los ilusos (Jonás Trueba), Harry, un amie qui vous veut du bien (Dominik Moll), La herida (Fernando Franco) y Todas las mujeres (Mariano Barroso). Junto a las últimas producciones de cine español, esta cuarta edición acogerá también la sección Acting Across Frontiers, con la participación del actor Sergi López, que se unirá al programa con una singular entrevista.

Año 1944, posguerra española. Ofelia y su madre, Carmen, que se encuentra en avanzado estado de gestación, se trasladan a un pequeño pueblo al que ha sido destinado el nuevo marido de Carmen, Vidal, un cruel capitán del ejército franquista por el que la niña no siente ningún afecto. La misión de Vidal es acabar con los últimos miembros de la resistencia republicana que permanecen escondidos en los montes de la zona. Reconocido como un clásico contemporáneo, El laberinto del fauno ofrece una brillante reflexión sobre los peligrosos excesos del fascismo y las posibilidades que brinda la imaginación como espacio para la creatividad y la evasión ante las más difíciles circunstancias.

Okwe es un inmigrante ilegal en Londres, un nigeriano que trabaja como chófer de un minitaxi y como recepcionista en un hotel poco respetable. Comparte apartamento con Senay, una orgullosa muchacha que busca refugiados turcos. El delicado equilibrio de su vida se rompe, sin embargo, cuando hace un descubrimiento asombroso en una de las habitaciones del hotel.

Before celebrating the 10th edition of the London Spanish Film Festival in September, we once again bring to London audiences a Spring Weekend from 16 to 18 May with some recent Spanish films including David Trueba’s absolute winner at this year’s Goya awards celebration, Living Is Easy with Eyes Closed, as well as some excellent films from the past year not to be missed: 15 Years and One Day (Gracia Querejeta), Little Indi (Marc Recha), The Wishful Thinkers (Jonás Trueba), With a Friend Like Harry… (Dominik Moll), Wounded (Fernando Franco) and Todas las mujeres (Mariano Barroso). In parallel to this line-up of recent productions, we are happy to host the third instalment of the Acting Across Frontiers section which will look at the work across European frontiers of actor Sergi López, who will join us for a unique on-stage interview.

Guillermo del Toro’s magical masterpiece, fusing fairy tale, horror and myth, provides Sergi López with one of his most acclaimed roles. A young girl, Ofelia faces a series of challenges in a post-Civil War Spain landscape where nothing can be taken a face value. Her mother’s remarriage to the sadistic army captain Vidal creates a climate of oppressive fear and surveillance within the family home while in the surrounding forest a series of creatures and fairies offer a different set of challenges. López excels as the ruthless military officer determined to stop at nothing to carry out his mission to root out the enemy within who meets his match in the enterprising, ingenious Ofelia. Now rightly recognised as a contemporary classic.

Dirty Pretty Things, by Stephen Frears

Stephen Frears gritty urban thriller offers a tale of two cities in its focus on the illegal immigrants servicing a smart London hotel where they work silently in the shadows – expendable, underpaid labour. Okwe (Chiwetal Ejiofor), a doctor who has escaped from his native Nigeria, juggles a day job as a taxi driver with night duties as a hotel porter. One evening, a horrifying discovery brings him into conflict with the hotel’s manager, Juan, known as Sneaky (Sergi López) who appears to be using his position to run a number of dangerous illegal operations. Soon Okwe finds that his own safely as well as that of his Turkish co-worker Senay (Audrey Tautou) is in jeopardy, for the smug, smooth-talking Sneaky (one of López’s most infamous creations) knows much more than he initially reveals.

Encuentro con Carlos Saura

En conversación con Joana Granero, Directora del London Spanish Film Festival

La directora del Festival de cine español en Londres, Joana Granero, conversará con Carlos Saura sobre su dilatada trayectoria cinematográfica, sus proyectos actuales y su faceta como fotógrafo.

Carlos Saura es uno de los cineastas españoles más reconocidos a nivel nacional e internacional, galardonado en los festivales de cine de San Sebastián, con el documental Cuenca, y de Berlín, que consagró internacionalmente la figura de Saura al concederle el Oso de Plata en 1964 por su largometraje La Caza. Berlín premiará también sus películas Peppermint frappé con el Oso de Plata en 1968 y Deprisa, deprisa con el Oso de Oro en 1980. Carlos Saura ha mantenido también una relación especial con el Festival de Cannes, donde se presentaron, dentro de la sección oficial las películas La Madriguera, 1969 y Ana y los lobos, 1972. Con La prima Angélica, 1973, Cría cuervos, 1976 y El Dorado, 1987 consiguió el Premio Especial del Jurado; Elisa, vida mía, 1976, Carmen, 1983 y Tango, 1997 también fueron premiadas. Su extensa trayectoria fue reconocida en 1991 al recibir la Medalla de Oro de las Bellas Artes, a la que se sumaría en 2004 el Premio del Cine Europeo.

Meet Carlos Saura

The Director of the London Spanish Film Festival , Joana Granero, will converse with Carlos Saura about his vast cinematographic career, his current projects and his career as a photographer.

Carlos Saura, one of the most prominent Spanish filmmakers, has been awarded national and internationally. In 1958 he shot the documentary Cuenca, for which he won the Special Prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival. In 1964, the Berlin Film Festival established Saura as an international figure – awarding him the Silver Bear for his feature film La Caza (The Hunt). Berlin would also award his films: Peppermint Frappé with the Silver Bear in 1968, and Deprisa, Deprisa (Faster, Faster) with the Golden Bear in 1980. His films La Madriguera (Honeycomb), 1969 and Ana y Los Lobos (Ana and the Wolves), 1972 were presented in the official section at Cannes Film Festival. He received the Special Jury Prize for La Prima Angélica (Cousin Angelica), 1973, Cría Cuervos (Raise Ravens), 1976 and El Dorado, 1987. In 1991, he was awarded the Medalla de Oro de las Bellas Artes and in 2004 received the Premio del Cine Europeo (The European Film Prize) for his cinematic career.

Escritores españoles y latinoamericanos galardonados con el Premio Nobel de Literatura

Camilo José Cela (1916-2002) En los primeros años de la década de los cuarenta, trabajó como censor de revistas y en 1942 publicó su primera novela, La familia de Pascual Duarte. En 1945 comenzó a escribir la obra que la mayoría de los críticos considera su obra culmen, La colmena, publicada en 1951 en Buenos Aires. Las obras de Cela incluyen 14 novelas, relatos breves, media docena de libros de viajes, algunos de poesía y teatro, dos volúmenes de memorias, dos volúmenes sobre insultos y palabras malsonantes, y diversos ensayos sobre la literatura española y los géneros literarios. A pesar de su carácter controvertido, Cela realizó una sobresaliente contribución a la cultura española de mediados de siglo, que alcanzaría el máximo reconocimiento con la entrega del Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1989.

Dr David Henn, Honorary Reader en UCL, ha publicado artículos y capítulos de libros sobre la obra de Cela, Emilia Pardo Bazán o el Nobel portugués José Saramago. Actualmente, está terminando un libro sobre las implicaciones políticas de los libros de viajes publicados durante el régimen de Franco.

Spanish And Latin American Literature Nobel Prize Winners

Camilo José Cela (1916-2002) During the Spanish Civil War he left Republican-controlled Madrid in 1937 in order to join General Franco’s Nationalist forces. In the early 1940s he worked as a part-time censor of magazines and in 1942 published his first novel, La familia de Pascual Duarte. In 1945 he began writing the work that most critics regard as his masterpiece, La colmena which was eventually published in Buenos Aires in 1951. Cela publications include 14 novels, collections of short stories, a half dozen travel books, some poetry and plays, two volumes of memoirs, two volumes of scabrous lexicography, and many essays on Spanish literature and on literary genres. Although a controversial figure, Cela made, in an impressive variety of ways, an outstanding contribution to Spanish culture in the half century that preceded his receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1989.

Dr. David Henn, Honorary Reader at UCL, has published on the work of Cela, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Pío Baroja, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Ramón Sender as well as on the Portuguese Nobel Laureate, José Saramago. He is completing a book on the political implications of  Spanish travel writing of the Franco period.

Estos textos también se encuentran disponibles en EL Centro Virtual Cervantes, CVC. Esta exposición virtual se presentó en  Madrid el 12 de octubre de 2013 con la colaboración de Google.

It is our pleasure to announce the inauguration of the Reina Sofia Library today.  Following the inauguration speeches in the library, Her Majesty will inaugurate the exhibition of travel books on Spain written between the XVIII and the XX Century. These books can be also found in a virtual exhibition in El Centro Virtual Cervantes, CVC. This project was launched in Madrid the 12 of Oct 2013 in collaboration with Google.

Día Mundial del Libro 2014:

El 23 de abril es la fecha que la UNESCO estableció como “Día Mundial del Libro y del Derecho de Autor” por coincidir con el aniversario de la muerte, en 1616, de Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

 En España la celebración del Día del Libro es una tradición y una fiesta de la Cultura  en la que tiene lugar la entrega anual del Premio Cervantes, que este año ha recaído en la escritora y periodista mexicana Elena Poniatowska. En Cataluña, que es también el día de San Jorge, existe  la tradición de intercambiar libros y rosas.

 ¡CELEBRALO CON NOSOTROS!

World Book Day 2014:

The 23rd of April is the date designated by UNESCO to celebrate the World Book Day and the Copyright Day as a worldwide celebration of books and reading because on this date is the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Miguel de Cervantes and theInca Garcilaso de la Vega.

 In Spain the celebration of the Book Day is a tradition and a cultural festivity in which the Cervantes prize is presented. This year’s winner is the Mexican writer and journalist Elena Poniatowska. In Catalonia it is also St. George’s Day called ‘The Day of the Rose’, where there is a tradition of exchanging books and roses.
