Mujeres y el flamenco en el S.XIX
Este año, el Instituto Cervantes de Utrecht celebra el Día Internacional de la Mujer (8 de marzo) centrándose en la enriquecedora pero complicada relación entre las mujeres y la música. Para ello hemos organizado cuatro actos diferentes y los dos primeros se harán públicos el mismo 8 de marzo. En primer lugar, una mesa redonda sobre las mujeres y la música, su papel, sus legados y sus retos futuros, con la colaboración de EUNIC NL. Ese día también podremos disfrutar de un programa musical protagonizado por mujeres de toda Europa que interpretarán piezas compuestas en su mayoría por mujeres.
Además, la pianista española Lara M. Taboada ha coordinado un ciclo de conciertos llamado «Polygnota: ayer musa, hoy compositora». Desde enero hasta mayo, el Instituto ofrece un concierto mensual retransmitido en directo, que intenta rescatar la obra de mujeres compositoras como Clara Schumann o Nadia y Lili Boulanger. Aparte de estas actividades, hemos investigado un poco sobre cómo las mujeres españolas interpretaban y utilizaban la música popular como acto de resistencia antes de que se les permitiera acceder a los conservatorios y profesionalizar su talento. ¿Cuál era la relación entre las mujeres y el flamenco a finales del siglo XIX y antes de la Guerra Civil? ¿Y qué significó el cuplé –un género musical rompedor y descaradamente femenino– para la liberación de la mujer en España?

Dit jaar viert het Instituto Cervantes Internationale Vrouwendag (8 maart) door aandacht te schenken aan de verrijkende maar tegelijkertijd moeizame verhouding tussen vrouwen en de muziek. Ter gelegenheid hiervan hebben we vier verschillende activiteiten georganiseerd, waarvan de eerste twee plaats zullen vinden op 8 maart zelf.
De eerste is een rondetafelgesprek over vrouwen en muziek, hun rol, hun erfenis en hun uitdagingen voor de toekomst, in samenwerking met EUNIC NL. Op deze dag kunnen we bovendien genieten van een muzikaal programma door vrouwelijke musici vanuit heel Europa die werken uitvoeren van grotendeels vrouwelijke componisten.
Daarnaast heeft de Spaanse pianiste Lara M. Taboada een concertreeks samengesteld getiteld «Polygnota: gisteren muze, vandaag componist». Van januari tot en met mei organiseert het Instituto Cervantes maandelijks een concert via livestream, dat het werk van vrouwelijke componisten als Clara Schumann of Nadia en Lily Boulanger van de vergetelheid wil redden. Naast deze activiteiten hebben we onderzoek gedaan naar de manier waarop Spaanse vrouwen de populaire muziek vertolkten en gebruikten als teken van verzet, voordat zij uiteindelijk werden toegelaten tot de conservatoria en hun talent konden professionaliseren. Welke relatie hadden vrouwen met de flamenco aan het einde van de 19e eeuw en vóór de Burgeroorlog? En wat betekende de cuplé (populair en pikant theaterlied) – een muzikaal genre dat roldoorbrekend en ongegeneerd vrouwelijk was – voor de bevrijding van de vrouw in Spanje?

This year, the Instituto Cervantes is celebrating International Women’s Day (8th March) focusing on the enriching but complicated relationship between women and music. That is why we have organized four different events. The first two will take place on the 8th of March. Firstly, we will have a round table on women and music, their role, their legacies and their future challenges, with the collaboration of EUNIC NL. That day we will also be able to enjoy a musical programme performed by women from all across Europe who will perform pieces mostly composed by women.
Moreover, the Spanish pianist Lara M. Taboada has coordinated a concert series called “Polygnota: ayer musa, hoy compositora”. From January until May, the Institute offers a monthly concert in which we try to rescue the work of women composers such as Clara Schumann or Nadia and Lili Boulanger. On top of that, we have also done a bit of research on how Spanish women performed and used folk music as an act of resistance before they were allowed to access the conservatories and professionalize their talent. And what did cuplé – a ground-breaking and shameless women-oriented music genre – meant to the liberation of women across Spain?

Día Internacional de la Mujer – 8 de marzo 2021
Hace ya cuatro años el Instituto Cervantes de los Países Bajos se fijó el objetivo de asignar un tema anual a la conmemoración del Día Internacional de la Mujer para, de esa forma, centrar el debate y hacerlo más eficaz.
En 2018 hablamos de Mujer y Libros; en 2019 de Mujer y Arte; en 2020 de Mujer y Ciencia, y este año 2021 lo dedicamos a Mujer y Música con un programa muy elaborado que tiene diversas ramificaciones.
En un proyecto esencialmente colaborativo, en el que hemos trabajado junto a EUNIC NL, la Embajada de España en La Haya, la representación de la Comisión Europea en los Países Bajos y la OBA (Biblioteca Pública de Ámsterdam), hemos obtenido también participaciones específicas de varias de los institutos y embajadas integrantes de nuestro clúster europeo.
Estas son las diferentes actividades que conforman el programa común:
1. Polygnota de Tebas: ayer musa, hoy compositora
Ciclo de cinco conciertos que se retransmiten en directo desde el Auditorio del Instituto Cervantes de Utrecht y que pretende poner en valor el trabajo de mujeres compositoras más o menos silenciadas por la historia. Coordinado por la pianista Lara Martínez Taboada, la serie ofrece un escenario para mostrar su trabajo a jóvenes de varias nacionalidades que actualmente estudian en los Países Bajos. Más información
2. Mesa redonda
Se celebrará en el teatro de la OBA/Ámsterdam y contará con la participación de siete ponentes (4 presencialmente, 3 desde diferentes países de Europa) para hablar sobre temas que hoy preocupan en el ámbito de las mujeres y el mundo de la música. Más información.
3. Actuaciones musicales
Patrocinados por diferentes socios de EUNIC NL, ofrecemos siete actuaciones musicales que se han grabado en diferentes ciudades especialmente para esta ocasión. El nexo común es que los protagonistas de cada actuación son intérpretes y/o compositoras mujeres. Más información.
4. Exposición virtual: Marsch der Frauen
Titulada “The March of the women”, la muestra virtual está producida por EntArteOpera y llega desde Viena a través de la Embajada de Austria en La Haya y presenta perfiles de docenas de mujeres compositoras europeas marginadas que trabajaron entre 1850 y 1980. Más información.

Internationale Vrouwendag . 8 maart 2021
Vier jaar geleden stelde het Instituto Cervantes in Nederland zich ten doel de viering van Internationale Vrouwendag elk jaar een thema te geven om zo het debat meer aandacht en daadkracht te geven.
In 2018 was het centrale thema Vrouwen en Boeken; in 2019 Vrouwen en Kunst; in 2020 Vrouwen en Wetenschap, en dit jaar hebben we het over Vrouwen en Muziek met een zeer uitgebreid programma met uiteenlopende activiteiten.
Aan het gezamenlijke sproject, waarin we hebben samengewerkt met EUNIC NL, de Ambassade van Spanje in Den Haag, de vertegenwoordiging van de Europese Commissie in Nederland en de OBA (Openbare Bibliotheek van Amsterdam), hebben ook een aantal instituten en ambassades die lid zijn van onze Europese cluster deelgenomen.
Het gemeenschappelijke programma bestaat uit de volgende activiteiten:
1. Polygnota van Thebe: gisteren muze, vandaag componist
Reeks van vijf concerten die live worden uitgezonden vanuit het auditorium van het Instituto Cervantes in Utrecht en die tot doel heeft het werk van vrouwelijke componisten die door de geschiedenis min of meer het zwijgen zijn opgelegd, in de schijnwerpers te zetten. Gecoördineerd door pianiste Lara Martínez Taboada, biedt de serie een podium om hun werk te laten zien aan jongeren van verschillende nationaliteiten die momenteel in Nederland studeren. 2. Rondetafelgesprek
Het gesprek vindt plaats in het OBA / Amsterdam theater met zeven sprekers (vier persoonlijk aanwezig, drie vanuit verschillende Europese landen) die zullen praten over kwesties die vandaag de dag zorgen baren op het gebied van vrouwen en de muziekwereld. Meer informatie
3. Muzikale uitvoeringen
Gesponsord door verschillende EUNIC NL partners, bieden wij zeven muzikale optredens aan die speciaal voor deze gelegenheid in verschillende steden zijn opgenomen. De voorstellingen hebben een ding gemeen: de hoofdrolspelers zijn vrouwelijke artiesten en / of componisten. Meer informatie.
4. Virtuele tentoonstelling: Marsch der Frauen
De virtuele tentoonstelling, getiteld «The March of the Women», wordt geproduceerd door EntArteOpera en komt vanuit Wenen via de Oostenrijkse ambassade in Nederland en presenteert de profielen van tientallen gemarginaliseerde Europese vrouwelijke componisten die werkten tussen 1850 en 1980. International Women’s Day 2021. March 8, 2021
Four years ago the Instituto Cervantes in the Netherlands set itself the goal of assigning an annual theme to the commemoration of International Women’s Day in order to focus the debate and make it more effective.
In 2018 we talked about Women and Books; in 2019 about Women and Art; in 2020 about Women and Science; and this year, 2021, we are dedicating it to Women and Music, with a very elaborate programme that has several ramifications.
In an essentially collaborative project, in which we have worked together with EUNIC NL, the Spanish Embassy in The Hague, the representation of the European Commission in the Netherlands and the OBA (Amsterdam Public Library), we have also been lucky enough to receive specific contributions from several of the institutes and embassies that are members of our cluster.
Four different sets of activities make up our 2022 programme:
1. Polygnota of Thebes: yesterday muse, today composer
A series of five concerts broadcast live from the Auditorium of the Institute in Utrecht, which aims to highlight the work of women composers who have been more or less silenced by history. Coordinated by pianist Lara Martínez Taboada, the series offers a stage to showcase their work to young conservatory students of different nationalities currently studying in the Netherlands. 2. Round Table
It will be held in the theatre of the OBA/Amsterdam and will bring together seven speakers (4 in person, 3 connecting online from different European countries) to talk about current issues of concern in the field of women and the world of music. More information
3. Musical program
Sponsored by different partners of EUNIC NL, we offer seven musical videos that have been recorded in different European cities and especially for this occasion. The common link is that the protagonists of each performance are female performers and/or composers. More information
4. Virtual exhibition: Marsch der Frauen

La vida es sueño es una película de Vanesa Abajo Pérez. Fue seleccionada por el concurso Gouden Kalf de documental largo y se presentó el pasado mes de septiembre en el Festival de Cine de los Países Bajos (Nederlandse Film Festival). La directora presentará la película y después de la proyección contestará las preguntas del público.
A finales de la década de 1960, los padres de Vanesa huyeron de la profunda pobreza del régimen de Franco para perseguir su sueño en Holanda. Trabajaron de forma ininterrumpida durante 45 años, con el objetivo de volver ricos a España. Allí, en una cómoda casa llena de kitsch azul y dorado brillante de Delft, finalmente pueden descansar.
Vanesa creció en Holanda, donde aún vive, pero todavía se siente atrapada en la imagen onírica de sus padres, a pesar de la distancia que los separa. Dividida entre dos lugares en casa, se sumerge en su pasado. ¿Qué tipo de vida vivía realmente su familia?
La directora disecciona el sueño migrante de sus padres con la poesía y la precisión de su cámara. Mientras que el límite entre el sueño y la realidad, la ilusión y la desilusión se desvanece lentamente, la película se convierte en una historia íntima y surrealista sobre el desarrollo personal y el valor de los lazos familiares.
La vida es sueño is een film van Vanesa Abajo Pérez. De film werd geselecteerd voor de Gouden Kalf competitie voor lange documentaires en werd afgelopen september gepresenteerd tijdens het Film Festival in Nederland (Nederlands Film Festival).
De regisseur zal de film inleiden en na de vertoning vragen van het publiek beantwoorden.
Eind jaren zestig ontvluchtten Vanesa’s ouders de diepe armoede van het Franco-regime om hun droom in Nederland na te jagen. Ze zwoegden onafgebroken, 45 jaar lang, met als doel rijk naar Spanje terug te keren. Daar, in een comfortabel huis vol Delfts blauw en goud glimmende kitsch, kunnen ze nu eindelijk uitrusten.
Vanesa groeide op in Nederland en woont er nog steeds maar voelt zich, ondanks de afstand tussen hen, nog altijd gevangen in het droombeeld van haar ouders. Verscheurd tussen twee thuisplekken, duikt ze opnieuw in haar verleden. Wat voor leven heeft haar familie eigenlijk geleefd? In Het leven is droom ontleedt Vanesa de migrantendroom van haar ouders met de poëzie en precisie van haar camera. Terwijl de grens tussen droom en werkelijkheid, illusie en desillusie, langzaam vervaagt, ontwikkelt de film zich tot een intieme, surrealistische vertelling over zelfontplooiing en de waarde van familiebanden.

Juan Gómez Bárcena -European Literature Night
La Noche Europea de la Literatura, un proyecto de EUNIC Países Bajos, reúne a autores célebres y otros talentos literarios de toda Europa. Es un espacio de exploración, de comprensión de las diferencias y de reconocimiento de las similitudes, que pretende un replantamiento del concepto de «europeidad» tanto por parte de los autores como del público. El tema de este año es «La literatura, el antídoto».
Nunca antes habíamos estado tan conectados y tan aislados al mismo tiempo. ¿Cómo será nuestro mundo después de la pandemia? Según Arundhati Roy, la Covid-19 «es un portal, una vía de entrada entre un mundo y el siguiente», que «obliga a los humanos a romper con el pasado e imaginar su mundo». ¿Cómo podemos imaginar este mundo? ¿Qué puede predecir la literatura a partir de la experiencia de los últimos meses en Europa? Escuchemos a los escritores europeos de hoy, las antenas de nuestras sociedades. ¿Puede la literatura ser un antídoto?.
El escritor español invitado en esta ocasión es Juan Gómez Bárcena (Santander, 1984), licenciado en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada, en Filosofía y en Historia. Es autor de la novela El cielo de Lima (Salto de Página, 2014), editada en neerlandés por Wereldbibliotheek con el título De hemel boven Lima. Su libro de relatos Los que duermen (Salto de Página, 2012) fue considerada una de las mejores primera obras de 2012. Recibió el premio La Tormenta al mejor autor revelación. Juan participó virtualmente en nuestro club de lectura el pasado mes de abril, con su reciente novela Kanada (Sexto Piso, 2017), que será publicada en breve en neerlandés por la misma editorial holandesa. Su última novela se llama Ni siquiera los muertos y ha sido editada este mismo año en España, también por la editorial Sexto Piso.
Este año La Noche de la Literatura Europea forma parte del Foro de Cultura Europea de De Balie, y se presenta también en relación con el Estado de la Literatura Europea, una conferencia anual protagonizada este año por Philipp Blom y coorganizada con la Universidad de Ámsterdam (Facultad de Humanidades, ACES, con el apoyo de OSL).

De European Literature Night, een project van EUNIC Netherlands, brengt zowel gevierde auteurs als veelbelovend literair talent uit heel Europa samen. Het is een ruimte voor verkenning, voor het begrijpen van verschillen en het erkennen van overeenkomsten, en het opnieuw vormgeven van ‘Europeaan-zijn’ voor zowel auteurs als publiek. Het thema van dit jaar is ‘Literatuur, het tegengif’.
Nooit eerder waren we zo verbonden en tegelijkertijd zo geïsoleerd. Hoe ziet onze wereld eruit na de pandemie? Volgens Arundhati Roy is Covid-19 ‘een portaal, een poort tussen de ene wereld en de volgende’, die ‘mensen dwingt te breken met het verleden en zich hun wereld opnieuw voor te stellen’. Hoe kunnen we ons deze wereld voorstellen? Wat kan literatuur voorspellen op basis van de ervaringen van de afgelopen maanden in Europa? Laten we luisteren naar de Europese schrijvers van vandaag, de antennes van onze samenlevingen. Kan literatuur een tegengif zijn?
De uitgenodigde Spaanse schrijver bij deze gelegenheid is Juan Gómez Bárcena (Santander, 1984). Hij is afgestudeerd in de Literatuurwetenschap, Filosofie en Geschiedenis. Hij is de auteur van de roman El cielo de Lima (Salto de Página, 2014), in het Nederlands uitgegeven door Wereldbibliotheek onder de titel De hemel boven Lima. Zijn boek met korte verhalen Los que duermen (Salto de Página, 2012) werd beschouwd als een van de beste eerste werken van 2012. Hij ontving de La Tormenta-prijs voor de meest opvallende nieuwe schrijver. Juan nam afgelopen april virtueel deel aan onze leesclub met zijn recente roman Kanada (Sexto Piso, 2017), die binnenkort in het Nederlands zal verschijnen bij dezelfde Nederlandse uitgever. Zijn nieuwste roman Ni siquiera los muertos kwam dit jaar in Spanje uir, ook bij uitgeverij Sexto Piso.
De European Literature Night maakt dit jaar deel uit van het Forum on European Culture en gaat gepaard met de State of European Literature , een keynote die mede wordt georganiseerd door de UvA (Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen, ACES, ondersteund door OSL). Deze jaarlijkse lezing, dit jaar ingehuldigd door Philipp Blom , behandelt de staat van de literatuur in Europa en de staat van Europa vanuit literatuurperspectief.
De Literatuuravond vindt plaats in De Brakke Grond, op vrijdag 18 september van 21.00 – 23.00 uur. Om fysiek de Literatuurnacht bij te wonen, kun je kaartjes kopen op de website van het Forum on European Culture , waar je ook biografieën van de auteurs kunt vinden. Je kunt het evenement ook gratis via livestream bekijken. De livestream is te vinden op verschillende platforms, bijvoorbeeld op het YouTube-kanaal van het Forum on European Culture of op onze eigen Facebookpagina.
The European Literature Night, a EUNIC Netherlands project, brings together both celebrated authors and promising literary talents from all over Europe. It is a space for exploration, for understanding differences and recognizing similarities, reimagining ‘Europeanness’ for both authors and audiences. This year’s theme is ‘Literature, the Antidote’.
Never before have we been so connected and so isolated at the same time. What will our world look like after the pandemic? According to Arundhati Roy, Covid-19 ‘is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next’, which ‘forces humans to break with the past and to imagine their world anew.’ How can we imagine this world? What can literature predict on the basis of the experience of the past months in Europe? Let’s listen to the European writers of today, the antennae of our societies. Can literature be an antidote?
The Spanish writer invited on this occasion is Juan Gómez Bárcena (Santander, 1984), who holds degrees in Literary Theory and Compared Literature, in Philosophy and in History. He is the author of the novel El cielo de Lima (Salto de Página, 2014), published in Dutch by Wereldbibliotheek under the title De hemel boven Lima. His book of short stories Los que duermen (Salto de Página, 2012) was considered one of the best first works of 2012. He received the La Tormenta award to the most outstanding new writer. Juan participated virtually in our book club last April, with his recent novel Kanada (Sexto Piso, 2017), which will be published shortly in Dutch by the same publisher in the Netherlands. His latest novel is called Not Even the Dead and has been published this year in Spain, also by the publisher Sexto Piso.
The European Literature Night is this year part of the Forum on European Culture, and paired with the State of European Literature, a key note co-organized by UvA (Faculty of Humanities, ACES, supported by OSL). This annual lecture, this year inaugurated by Philipp Blom, will address the state of literature in Europe and the state of Europe through the perspective of literature.
The Literature Nnight will take place at De Brakke Grond, on Friday the 18th of September from 9.00 pm – 11.00 pm. To attend the Literature Night physically, you can buy tickets on the website of the Forum on European Culture, where you can also find biographies of the authors. You can also watch the event through livestream for free. The livestream can be found on several platforms, for example on the YouTube channel of the Forum on European Culture or on our own Facebook page.
