The Waiting Room. El exilio español en el Reino Unido – The Waiting Room. Spanish exile in the United Kingdom

The Waiting Room - Spaish exile in the United Kingdom.

______________________________________________________________

Spanish exiles arrived in the UK in the first part of the XX century. Trapped between two wars, their presence was a period of transition that, for some, became permanent.

This project serves to introduce a dialogue about the intellectual contribution of those who came to this country, and to present their story as part of the very history of the UK. Would it be possible today to rethink the notion of exile beyond its typical association of being a forced condition? Could that formulation give place to the creation of a new outcome, a global citizen able to transit among borders and cultures?

The Waiting Room, through two months of music, cinema, book, documentary, talks and art, intends to explore these vital questions around exile, memory and identity, highlighted by a city as extraordinary as London.

The Waiting Room is an open and free exhibition, taking place on 27 April through 30 June 2015 in our centre on 102 Eaton Square, London SW1W 9AN.

This is EUNIC

EUNIC is the network of the international cultural institutes from the member states of the European Union. It was formed in 2006 and has 29 members from 24 countries. Around the world, member institutes come together in “clusters” to develop local activities, and there are over 80 clusters at present. They have an international reputation as Europe’s leading cultural relations practitioners. Their projects focus on arts, languages, youth, and education, science, intercultural dialogue, and devel- opment sectors.
EUNIC London is the network of the cultural institutes from the member states of the European Union in London. Established in September 2007 the network has at present 31 members who share knowledge and resources on common projects, with the aim of developing European cultural diversity and creativity in the UK.

Why a European Cultural Centres walking tour?

The Sursum Linguae project involves several communication and debate projects to be held in London throughout the year. One part of this project is this guided tour of some of the most representative European cultural institutes in London. Thanks to Sursum Linguae, EUNIC aims to raise awareness and bring to London’s audience the multilingual diversity represented by the European cultural institutes. The diversity within the walls and the cultural richness from its rooms have prompted us to organise this tour, which aims to “stage” in one afternoon the union within diversity in the field of EUNIC, for those who want to enrol therefore in a “glocal” concept of cultural and linguistic experience. The thrill of the living experience cannot be replaced: nothing compares to the actual touch of books and accents, to walk through the rooms filled with echoes, the smell of history of the buildings, and the dynamism which brings the direct contemplation of the various proposals we support.

Walking Tour events at the Instituto Cervantes London

The Instituto Cervantes London will offer a range of activities and discounts for all new students. Level tests between 5pm and 8pm. Enrolment will be open, exceptionally, until 8pm! Plus there will be a 10 % discount for all new students who enrol in person on that day. 20 minutes taster lessons for absolute beginners, at 5 and 6pm.

FOTOGRAFÍA
EXPOSICIÓN

24 MARZO – 18 MAYO

EXHIBITION

24 MARCH – 18 MAY
Exhibition Room Instituto Cervantes de Londres

The exhibition brings together a selection of work produced by both photographers during their long careers, from the 1950s to the present day. It focuses on the portrait genre, but represents ‘portraiture’ in the broadest sense. It is for that reason that we see portraits of anonymous people and even of animals as part of the collection. Since the portrait Pomés took of his barber in 1950, or Saura’s of Pio Baroja in 1956, their cameras have captured personalities from the worlds of cinema, literature, the visual arts and design, as well as ordinary people from their personal lives or family. Pomés and Saura belong to the same generation, have achieved enormous success and have followed paths that are in some ways similar. Both have combined their dedication to photography with other activities – such as publicity campaigns and cinema. They had their first photography exhibitions in the 1950s, each beginning at an early age on their respective documentary projects. Both were invited to produce photographs of the Barcelona Olympic Games, and took not only portraits but also exercised their curiosity for other kinds of photography, taking pictures of the city and its peoples, their native towns, and their family and social circles.

Works by the Ecuadorian artist María José Argenzio

OPENING TUE 05 – 6.30pm
UNTIL SAT 30/12
Exhibitions room  Instituto Cervantes London

The exhibition presents a selection of works realised in the last years along with her most recent production synthesising a series of concerns that have permeated the artist’s practice since her beginnings: the exotism and its multilayered connotations, the absurdity of the gesture, the economic and political codification of the Ecuadorian society and the appropriation of icons to question concepts such as identity and historical legacy. The individual show deliberately opens  an assortment of interpretations that brings the works in their deep coherence and ramifications from a poetical and subtle angle.

Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape
