The Artist and his work

Coincidiendo con la exposición que el Yorkshire Sculpture Park dedica a Jaume Plensa y que estará abierta al público del 9 de abril hasta el 25 de septiembre de 2011, el Instituto Cervantes de Londres propicia la oportunidad de acercarse a la obra y a la personalidad de uno de los escultores más valorados del panorama artístico internacional, a través de un encuentro en primera persona con el creador. La diversidad de formatos y materiales, el rigor en su trabajo y la implicación con la comunidad en la que la obra se inscribe son una constante en la trayectoria del artista. Una parte importante de su creación se encuadra en el denominado «arte público», con trabajos en España, Francia, Japón, Reino Unido, Corea, Alemania, Canadá o Estados Unidos. Ha obtenido los más importantes reconocimientos internacionales. / To coincide with Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s exhibition dedicated to Jaume Plensa, which runs from 9 April to 25 September, the Instituto Cervantes in London is offering the opportunity to get closer to the work and personality of one of the mostly highly regarded sculptors in the world, through a personal encounter with the artist himself. The diversity of form and materials, the robustness of his work, and the way each piece is linked to the community in which it is exhibited, are all central to his development as an artist. A major part of his work is so called «public art», with pieces in spain, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the United States. His sculpture has been recognised with major awards on the international stage.

Spanish exiles in Great Britain 2: Manuel Chaves Nogales

Manuel Chaves Nogales (1987-1944), practicó el «Nuevo Periodismo» en el que combinaba elementos periodísticos y otros puramente narrativos. De ellos surgen dos brillantes libros Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales tuvo el coraje de denunciar los peligros, el sectarismo y las salvajadas de los dos enemigos de la democracia liberal, el fascismo y el comunismo, en su obra sobre la Guerra Civil española  A sangre y fuego. Al servicio de la República, cuando el Gobierno abandonó Madrid, emprendió con su familia el exilio a Francia, donde colaboró con la prensa francesa y latinoamericana. Fichado por la Gestapo, embarcó rumbo a Inglaterra, donde ejerció la profesión hasta su prematura muerte a causa de una enfermedad en 1944./ Manuel Chaves Nogales (1897-1944) practised «New Journalism», with a blend of journalistic elements and the purely narrative. He creates two outstanding books: Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales had the courage to condemn the dangers, the sectarianism and the atrocities of the two enemies of liberal democracy – fascism and comunism- in his book about the Spanish Civil War A sangre y fuego. He believed fervently in the Republic. When the Government abandoned Madrid, he went into exile with his family in France, where he collaborated with the French and Latin American press. Wanted by the Gestapo, he moved to England, where he continued as a journalist until his premature death in 1944 following an illness.

Cada uno de ellos ha elegido su palabra favorita del idioma.  Mario Vargas Llosa, Eugenia Silva, Ricardo Darín, Shakira, Diego Forlán, Margarita Salas, Emilio Botín, Vicente del Bosque, Ferran Adriá, Alejandro Sanz, Alicia Alonso o Antonio Skármeta son sólo algunas de las figuras que han elegido su palabra, que los internautas ya pueden votar a través de la web participativa www.eldiae.es

Good Morning Freedom! celebra el período del cine español influenciado, de una parte, por «La Movida Madrileña» -movimiento cultural que tuvo lugar, aunque no exclusivamente, en Madrid cuando, tras la muerte de Franco en 1975, España abandonaba la dictadura- y que se prolongó hasta finales de la década de los ochenta, con la denominada «Comedia Madrileña» y con aquellas películas que reflejaban, sin miedo a las represalias por parte de los militares o la policía, un período oscuro de la historia de España. Todo ello, en un contexto y crecimiento económico y surgimiento de una nueva identidad española. El movimiento se caracterizaba por la libertad de expresión y la transgresión de los tabúes impuestos por la dictadura. / Good Morning Freedom! celebrates a period of film-making in Spain which was influenced by «La Movida Madrileña» -the cultural movement based predominantly, though not solely, in Madrid during Spain’s emergence from dictatorship following Franco’s death in 1975 and which lasted until the end of the 1980s with the so-called «Comedia Madrileña» and with films which reflected, without fear of military or police reprisals, a dark period in Spain’s history. All this coincided with economic growth and the emergence of a new Spanish identity. The movement was characterised by freedom of expression and transgression from the taboos imposed by the dictatorship.

El Quijote de mi vida

Invitado de honor / Guest of honour: Eliacer Cansino, Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2010

«¿Quién es para ti un Quijote?» Responder a esta pregunta en un mini-relato de no más de 500 palabras es la forma que proponemos a los estudiantes de español como lengua extranjera de las escuelas del ReinoUnido para celebrar el Día Internacional del Libro y la Lectura (23 de abril) y el Día Cervantino del Libro Infantil (25 de mayo). Y es en este último cuando se realizará el acto de entrega de los premios a los ganadores y contaremos con la presencia de Eliacer Cansino, último Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2010 en España, que viene , expresamente, para esta ocasión / «¿Quién es para ti un Quijote?» To answer this question in a short account of no more then 500 words, is the cahllenge we set for those learning Spanish in UK schools- in order to celebrate the International Day of the Book and Reading (23 April) abd the Cervantes Day of the Children’s Book (25 May). On the later we will hold a prize-giving for the winners and are pleased to welcome Eliacer Cansino, winner of the Premio Naional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2010 in Spain, who joins us specifically for the occasion.

WINNERS SHORT STORY COMPETITION II 2011

First of all, thank you all very much again for participating in the II Short Story competition contest “El Quijote de tu vida”. We also like to thank all the teachers that encouraged their pupils to write about Don Quijote. You all did a very good job. We have received more than 90 stories. Since this year there were a lot of wonderful stories the judge panel has decide to grant 2 more prizes for the runner-ups. We really enjoyed reading the texts received and we are very sorry we just could give six prizes for three winners in the two different categories.

We hope you enjoyed as much as we did practicing your Spanish and maybe discovering something new about our culture and about Don Quijote. In fact, this was the main purpose of our competition.

We will love you to participate again next year.

Mexico Knows Mexico. Texts by 50 contemporary prose writers.

Obra que ofrece una muestra amplia de lo mejor de la literatura producida a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XX en México. Esta antología convoca a más de cincuenta escritores mexicanos, desde los mundialmente reconocidos hasta las jóvenes voces de la actualidad. Entre todos ellos se compone un visión válida del país, su historia y sus diferentes realidades: combinando la erudición del ensayo, las perturbadoras sorpresas del cuento fantástico o lo real maravilloso, junto a fragmentos de novelas casi hiperrealistas. / A book that illustrates the very best in Mexican literature from the second half of the 20th century. This anthology gathers more than 50 Mexican  writers, from the world-renowed to the young voices of today. Together they make up a powerful vision of the country, its history and its different realities- combining erudite essays, the disqueting surprises of fantsay fiction or of the marvellously real, together with excerpts from almost hyper-realist novels.

Book Presentation: Raymond Carr: La curiosidad del zorro. A biography by María Jesús González Hernández.

Raymond Carr (Bath, Gran Bretaña, 1919) hispanista por accidente  y gusto, fue capaz de transformar la manera de escribir la historia de España y hacer que los españoles percibieran su propia tierra como un país «normal», libre de excepcionalidades y romanticismos existencialistas. Su libro de 1966, España 1801-1939, sus artículos, sus conferencias, sus brillantes discípulos José Varela Ortega, Juan Pablo Fusi o Joaquín Romero Maura y su propia inteligencia le convirtieron en una referencia ineludible / Raymond Carr (Bath, Great Britain, 1919) hispanist by accident and by design, managed to re-write the history of Spain in a way that enabled its people to see their homeland as a «normal» country, free from oddities and existential romanticism. His 1966 book Spain 1801-1939, his articles, his lectures, his brilliant disciples José Vaerla Ortega, Juan Pablo Fusi and Joaquín Romero Maura, as well as his sheer intelligence, have made him an invaluable source of reference.

Soft linguistics 2: English and Spanish as global languages

En esta segunda sesión se debatirá sobre el alcance internacional del inglés y el español en la actualidad y sobre el futuro desarrollo de ambas lenguas como instrumentos de comunicación tanto desde el punto de vista de su expansión geográfica, como desde su presencia en diversos ámbitos como la ciencia, la tecnología, Internet, el aprendizaje de lenguas, etc. / In this second session, we will discuss the international significance of English and Spanish today, and look at the future development of both languages as instruments of communication -both in terms of their geographical expansion and their significance in various fields such as science, technology, the Internet, language learning, etc.
