El prestigioso autor chileno Roberto Ampuero nos visitará el próximo martes 26 de mayo para presentar su último trabjao, «El caso Neruda», que acaba de ser traducido al inglés. Ampuero también nos hablará sobre su carrera y las vivencias que han inspirado su trabajo.

Nacido en Valparaíso, Roberto Ampuero ha publicado varios best sellers, entre ellos «Pasiones griegas», elegido en China como el mejor libro escrito en español en 2006; «Los amantes de Estocolmo», libro del año en Chile en 2003, y la pieza de ficción autobiográfica «Nuestros años verde olivo», aclamada por el Nobel de Literatura Mario Vargas Llosa.
A Roberto se le conoce por su personaje, el detective privado Cayetano Brulé, que aparece en las novelas «Cita en el azul profundo» (2004) y «Halcones de la noche» (2005). Ha habido un nuevo título que se ha añadido a esta colección con posterioridad, rompiendo el orden cronológico de los eventos en la vida del detective: «El caso Neruda» (2008), publicada recientemente en inglés por Souvenir Press (2012).
El último trabajo de Ampuero es «Detrás del muro» (2014), que trata sobre su exilio en la República Democrática Alemana (GDR). Su trabajo se desarrolla en Latinoamérica y España, y varias traducciones han sido publicadas en Croacia, China, Francia, Italia, Grecia, Portugal, y ahora el Reino Unido. El autor ha vivido en Chile, Cuba, la ex-GDR, actualmente unificada Alemania, Suecia, Estados Unidos -donde fue profesor en la Universidad de Iowa- y México, donde ejerció el cargo de embajador de Chile.
La presentación de «El caso Neruda», que se realizará en inglés, ha sido organizada por la embajada de Chile en el Reino Unido. Tendrá lugar en nuestro salón de actos el martes 26 de mayo a las 18:30h. The acclaimed Chilean writer Roberto Ampuero will come by on Tuesday 26 May, to present his latest book The Neruda Case, which has just recently been translated into English. Ampuero will also talk about his career and the experiences that have proved an inspiration to his work.
Born in Valaparaíso, Roberto Ampuero has published a series of best sellers, amongst them Greek Passions, voted by the Chinese in 2006 as the best novel written in Spanish; Stockholm Lovers, book of the year in Chile in 2003, and the autobiographical fiction Our Olive Green Years, praised by Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa. He is famous for his character, private detective Cayetano Brulé, who appeared in the novels Date in the Deep Blue (2004) and Night Hawkes (2005). Another exceptional novel was incorporated to this series, thus breaking the chronological order in the life of the detective: The Neruda Case (2008), recently published in English by Souvenir Press (2012).
Ampuero’s latest book is Behind the Wall (2014), which talks about his exile in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). His work circulates in the whole of Latin America and Spain, and several translations have been published in Croatia, China, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal and now The United Kingdom. The author has lived in Chile, Cuba, the ex-GDR, currently unified Germany , Sweden, the United States, where he taught at Iowa University, and Mexico, where he was the Chilean ambassador.
The presentation of The Neruda Case, which will be held in English, has been organised by the Embassy of Chile in the United Kingdom. It will take place on Tuesday 26 May at 6:30pm at our premises. Muchos exiliados españoles llegaron al Reino Unido en la primera mitad del siglo XX. Atrapados entre dos guerras, percibieron su propio traslado como algo temporal, aunque para algunos se convirtiera en permanente.

Este proyecto repasa la contribución intelectual de los que llegaron a este país, y presenta su historia como parte intrínseca de la historia de Gran Bretaña. ¿Sería posible, a día de hoy, concebir la idea del exilio fuera del contexto de condición forzosa? ¿Podría esa reformulación dar pie a una nueva realidad, en la que ciudadanos globales cruzasen fronteras e interactuasen con otras culturas con normalidad?

The Waiting Room, a lo largo de dos meses de música, cine, literatura, documentales, charlas y arte, intenta profundizar en estas cuestiones vitales sobre el exilio, la memoria y la identidad, culminadas en una ciudad tan extraordinaria como Londres.

The Waiting Room es una exhibición gratuita, abierta del 27 de abril al 30 de junio de 2015 en nuestro centro en 102 Eaton Square, London SW1W 9AN.

Spanish exiles arrived in the UK in the first part of the XX century. Trapped between two wars, their presence was a period of transition that, for some, became permanent.

This project serves to introduce a dialogue about the intellectual contribution of those who came to this country, and to present their story as part of the very history of the UK. Would it be possible today to rethink the notion of exile beyond its typical association of being a forced condition? Could that formulation give place to the creation of a new outcome, a global citizen able to transit among borders and cultures?

The Waiting Room, through two months of music, cinema, book, documentary, talks and art, intends to explore these vital questions around exile, memory and identity, highlighted by a city as extraordinary as London.

The Waiting Room is an open and free exhibition, taking place on 27 April through 30 June 2015 in our centre on 102 Eaton Square, London SW1W 9AN.

Launched in 1995 to promote reading, publishing and copyright, World Book and Copyright Day will, once again, take place on 23 April. With the help of the Federation of Publishers’ Guild of Spain, UNESCO established this day to coincide with the anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Panic Cure es una selección de poemas de “diez innovadores poetas españoles contemporáneos” escritos en español. Más que de una visión exhaustiva de la poesía española, se trata de una personalísima miscelánea escogida por un poeta no español, publicada fuera de España y creada principalmente para lectores no españoles. Forrest Gander ha elegido un pequeño grupo de poetas españoles emergentes que, inconscientemente, despliegan una multiplicidad de estilos y procedimientos que van más allá de los límites establecidos por la identificación con una generación y un país. Los poetas incluidos en esta obra son Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador y Esther Ramón.

Forrest Gander (Barstow, 1956) interesado por la manera en cómo somos traducidos, su obra Core Samples from the World fue finalista del Premio Pulitzer y del National Book Critics Circle Award. Es autor de numerosas publicaciones de poesía, novela así como traducciones. Entre sus más recientes antologías,
se encuentran Pinholes in the Night: Essential Poems from Latin American (seleccionada por Raúl Zurita) y Panic Cure: Poems from Spain for the 21st Century. La poesía de Gander ha sido publicada en revistas literarias tanto de Estados Unidos como en el extranjero y ha sido traducida a una docena de idiomas. Sus publicaciones se pueden encontrar en Francia, México, Chile, España, Bulgaria, Japón, Alemania y Holanda. Es miembro de United States Artists Rockefeller y ha recibido la beca de The National Endowment for the Arts y de las fundaciones Guggenheim, Whiting y Howard.

Esther Ramón (Madrid, 1970) es poeta, crítica literaria, profesora de escritura creativa y doctora en Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Ha escrito artículos de estética y crítica literaria para Revista de Libros, Archipiélago o Cuadernos hispanoamericanos y, entre otros, el estudio Geografía del frío, introducción al libro Poemas encadenados de Pedro Casariego Córdoba (Seix Barral, 2003), autor al que dedicó su tesis doctoral. Ha publicado los poemarios Tundra (Igitur, 2002), Reses (Trea, Premio Ojo Crítico 2008), Grisú (Trea, 2010, Sales (Amargord, 2011) y Caza con hurones (Icaria, 2013). Es coordinadora de redacción de la revista Minerva, en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, y dirige el taller La flecha y lo blanco. Taller de poesía y otras artes en la Fundación Centro de Poesía José Hierro.

Pilar Fraile Amador (Salamanca, 1975) es profesora de filosofía, además de dedicarse a la labor editorial. Fue Premio de Poesía de la Universidad de Zaragoza en 2005. Accésit de Poesía en el Certamen de Jóvenes Creadores del Ayuntamiento de Madrid en el año 2004 y 2005. Ha publicado los libros de poemas La pecera subterránea (Amargord Ediciones, 2011), El límite de la ceniza (Prensas Universitarias de Zaragoza, 2006); Y dos plaquettes: Antídoto (La República de la imaginación, Ed. Legados, Madrid 2009) y La disección de los insectos (Pánica 2, Ed. Delirio, Salamanca, 2006). Poemas suyos han sido publicados en diversas revistas como Hache, Alhucema o las electrónicas: 7de7, Pata de gallo o La dama duende. Actualmente coordina las actividades de difusión de la poesía de la asociación Indómita.

Panic Cure selects poems by “ten innovative contemporary poets from Spain” writing in Spanish. It is not a comprehensive survey of national poetry, but rather a highly personal miscellany chosen by a non- Spanish poet, published outside of Spain, and created primarily for non- Spanish readers. Forrest Gander has chosen a small group of up-and-coming poets from Spain who unselfconsciously display a multiplicity of stylistic and procedural choices beyond constraints of national and generational identifications. The poets featured in this volume are Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador, and Esther Ramón.

Forrest Gander (Barstow, 1956) concerned with the way we are revised and translated in encounters with the foreign, his book Core Samples from the World was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is author of numerous other books of poetry, novels and translations. His most recent anthologies are Pinholes in the Night: Essential Poems from Latin American (selected by Raúl Zurita) and Panic Cure: Poems from Spain for the 21st Century. Gander’s poems appear in many literary magazines in the U.S. and abroad, and have been translated into a dozen languages. His books in translation are available in France, Mexico, Chile, Spain, Bulgaria, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands. He is a United States Artists Rockefeller Fellow and has received fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim, Whiting, and Howard Foundations.

Esther Ramón (Madrid, 1970) is a poet and professor of creative writing and comparative literature at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Her work has been widely anthologized and also published in the volumes, Tundra (Montblanc: Ediciones Igitur, 2002), Reses (Gijón: Ediciones Trea, Critical Eye Award 2008), Grisú (Ediciones Trea, 2009) and Sales (Madrid: Ediciones Amargord, 2011). She is the coordinating editor of the magazine Minerva and she co-directs a Radio Circle poetry program called Definición de savia.

Pilar Fraile Amador (Salamanca, 1975) has a PhD in Philosophy from University of Oviedo and a Masters from University of Salamanca. A Professor of philosophy at Enseñanza Secundaria, she also works as an editor. In 2005, she was awarded the Poetry Prize from the University of Zaragoza. Her publications include El límite de la ceniza (Zaragoza: Prensas universitarias de Zaragoza), Larva (Amphibia Editorial) and La pecera subterránea (Madrid: Ediciones Amargord). Her work has also been collected in the homage for José Ángel Valente, Pájaros raíces (Madrid: Abada Editores), and in the anthology La república de la imaginación (Legados Ediciones). For three years, she directed events for the Association Indómita (http:// redindomita.blogspot.com) and she co-directed a poetry program on radio in Madrid.

España ha vivido importantes transformaciones en las últimas tres décadas, desde que acabara la dictadura hasta la consolidación de la democracia. Hasta 2008, tuvo un gran influjo de inversión del extranjero y una de las crecidas económicas más veloces de cualquiera de los países europeos. No obstante, ahora afronta una de las cifras más altas de desempleo de Europa. En Spain: what Everyone Needs to Know, el periodista William Chislett hace un recorrido por la fascinante y turbulenta historia de este país. En la presentación de su libro, lo acompañará Michael Portillo (Hertfordshire, 1953), también periodista y antiguo político del Partido Conservador británico.
William Chislett (Oxford, 1951) es periodista y escritor. Fue corresponsal de The Times de Londres en España (1975-78) y luego del Financial Times en México (1978-84). Ha escrito 20 libros sobre varios países, pero destaca su producción sobre política española tras la transición, con títulos como The Spanish Media since Franco in 1979, España: en busca del éxito in 1992, Spain: at a Turning Point in 1994 y Spain: the Central Hispano Handbook. Ha dado conferencias en las universidades de Oxford, Princeton, Harvard, Chicago, Georgetown, Suffolk y Bogazici (Estambul).

Spain has undergone significant transformations over the past three decades, from a dictatorship to a democracy. Until 2008, it enjoyed a major influx of foreign investment and the most rapid economic growth of any of the countries in the EU. Yet, it now faces the highest rate of unemployment in Europe. In Spain: What Everyone Needs to Know, veteran journalist William Chislett recounts the country’s fascinating and often turbulent history. In the presentation of his book, Michael Portillo (Herdfordshire, 1953) will share his views as well. Portillo is also journalist and former politician of the British Tory Party.

William Chislett (Oxford, 1951) is a journalist and writer, a former correspondent of The Times of London in Madrid and then th Financial Times in Mexico. New Spanish Books es un proyecto de ICEX, España Exportación e Inversiones, en colaboración con el Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte y la Federación de Gremios de Editores (FGEE), que tiene como objetivo la promoción de la venta de derechos de traducción de editoriales y agentes literarios españoles. Coordinados por ICEX en Londres, un panel de expertos locales hace una selección, de entre todos los libros participantes, de aquellos que considera más idóneos para el mercado británico. Por primera vez, la selección del panel de expertos británicos será presentada en el Instituto Cervantes el 3 de Julio.

New Spanish Books is an on-line guide of Spanish titles with available rights for translation, funded by the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), in collaboration with the Spanish Publishers’ Association and the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture & Sport. The project is aimed at publishers, translators, scouts and anyone interested in knowing which are the latest books coming out from Spain. Coordinated by ICEX London, a panel of local experts select those books they consider to have the most potential for being translated and published in the UK market out of all the books submitted. The UK panel selection will be announced at the Instituto Cervantes for the first time on July 3rd.

A talk by Lady Rachel Billington on the research for her latest novel

Maria and the Admiral is a novel based on the meeting between two real and extraordinary people in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1822. Both were British of Scottish descent. Maria Graham was a travel writer whose husband, a sea captain, died as his ship rounded Cape Horn. Admiral Lord Cochrane was a Napoleonic naval hero who ran foul of the Admiralty, spent time in prison and re-found his vocation as admiral of the new Chilean fleet. His tactical brilliance helped achieve independence for Chile and made him a hero once more. But no-one, as amply demonstrated by her journals, admired him more than Maria Graham.

Lady Rachel Billington tells the story from Maria’s point of view, recreating her life and character, after research in Chile, London and Scotland. In her talk she describes her own journey, both literal and figurative, in following Maria and Cochrane’s dramatic story. It is the story of a great love which endured earthquake, civil war and eventual separation. It is also an accurately researched picture of Chile as it emerged into independence.
The author, Lady Rachel Bilington, has published 21 novels for adults, six novels for children and six religious childrens’ books. She is an honorary Vice-President of English PEN, the writers’ organisation, and was made an OBE in 2012 for her services to literature. Rachel’s stimulus to write Maria and the Admiral came from a visit she paid to Chile in 2002 after her daughter married a Chilean.
The inaugural Sir Leslie Bowes Lecture was in 1989, following his death in 1988. Sir Leslie had a long and deep connection with Canning House (Chairman 1964-66; Vice-President 1967), and very close links with Latin America over many years. He was Vice-Chairman of the Anglo-Chilean (Chairman ‘65-70), Anglo-Peruvian, Anglo-Mexican, Anglo-Argentine and Anglo-Brazilian Societies.
Entry to the lecture is free, and a collection will be made afterwards, the profit from which will go towards the restoration of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Valparaíso, Chile.
