Comenzamos la conmemoración del cuarto centenario del fallecimiento de Cervantes con la presentación de este volumen, publicado por Book Now, que reúne por primera vez las tres novelas que el autor británico Robin Chapman escribió inspirándose en el Quijote.

«El diario de la duquesa» cuenta cómo María Isabel de Echauri, la duquesa de Caparroso, llega a creer que su personaje ha sido mal representado en un trabajo de ficción, y va adentrándose en uno de los campos favoritos de Cervantes: el diálogo entre la realidad y la ficción. «La edad dorada de Sancho» detalla cómo Sancho Panza, tras la muerte de Don Quijote, intenta hacer realidad el concepto de existencia que los dos imaginaron en su último viaje a casa. Por otra parte, «La vida de Pasamonte» desarrolla la autobiografía de un granuja, comenzada pero dejada a medio hacer cuando Don Quijote lo libera de un grupo de engrilletados.

Robin Chapman es novelista, guionista y dramaturgo. Está casado con la artista Jill Booty. Su último trabajo, «El Don Quijote de Shakespeare» (Book Now, 2011), es una novela dialogada que resucita a Cardenio, una obra perdida de William Shakespeare basada en Don Quijote. La obra se representa en un teatro marginal frente a los espíritus parlanchines de Cervantes y Shakespeare, que descubren que tienen mucho en común.

El autor británico se encuentra escribiendo «El joven rojo», un retrato literario de J. B. Trend, el primer profesor de español en la universidad de Cambridge, amigo a su vez de Lorca y Falla.

We start the celebrations of the fourth centenary of Cervantes’s death with the launch of this volume, published by Book Now, which brings together for the first time Robin Chapman’s three novels inspired by Don Quixote.

The Duchess’s Diary tells how Maria Isabel de Echauri, Duchess of Caparroso, comes to believe that she has been misportrayed in fiction, thus approaching one of Cervantes’s favorite themes, the dialogue between reality and fiction. Sancho’s Golden Age relates how Sancho Panza, after Don Quixote’s death, tries to create an ideal pastoral existence such as they had envisaged on their final journey home. Pasamonte’s Life extends a rogue’s auto biography already in progress but left in pawn when Don Quixote releases him from a chain-gang.

Robin Chapman is a novelist, playwright and screenwriter. He is married to the painter Jill Booty. His most recent book, Shakespeare’s Don Quixote, Book Now 2011, is a novel in dialogue which reconstructs Cardenio, a lost Shakespearean play based on Don Quixote. He imagines it performed in a fringe theatre in front of the talkative spirits of Cervantes and Shakespeare. They find they have much in common. He is at present working on That Red Young Man, a literary portrait of J.B. Trend, the first Professor of Spanish at Cambridge University and friend of Lorca and Falla.

El prestigioso autor chileno Roberto Ampuero nos visitará el próximo martes 26 de mayo para presentar su último trabjao, «El caso Neruda», que acaba de ser traducido al inglés. Ampuero también nos hablará sobre su carrera y las vivencias que han inspirado su trabajo.

Nacido en Valparaíso, Roberto Ampuero ha publicado varios best sellers, entre ellos «Pasiones griegas», elegido en China como el mejor libro escrito en español en 2006; «Los amantes de Estocolmo», libro del año en Chile en 2003, y la pieza de ficción autobiográfica «Nuestros años verde olivo», aclamada por el Nobel de Literatura Mario Vargas Llosa.
A Roberto se le conoce por su personaje, el detective privado Cayetano Brulé, que aparece en las novelas «Cita en el azul profundo» (2004) y «Halcones de la noche» (2005). Ha habido un nuevo título que se ha añadido a esta colección con posterioridad, rompiendo el orden cronológico de los eventos en la vida del detective: «El caso Neruda» (2008), publicada recientemente en inglés por Souvenir Press (2012).
El último trabajo de Ampuero es «Detrás del muro» (2014), que trata sobre su exilio en la República Democrática Alemana (GDR). Su trabajo se desarrolla en Latinoamérica y España, y varias traducciones han sido publicadas en Croacia, China, Francia, Italia, Grecia, Portugal, y ahora el Reino Unido. El autor ha vivido en Chile, Cuba, la ex-GDR, actualmente unificada Alemania, Suecia, Estados Unidos -donde fue profesor en la Universidad de Iowa- y México, donde ejerció el cargo de embajador de Chile.
La presentación de «El caso Neruda», que se realizará en inglés, ha sido organizada por la embajada de Chile en el Reino Unido. Tendrá lugar en nuestro salón de actos el martes 26 de mayo a las 18:30h. The acclaimed Chilean writer Roberto Ampuero will come by on Tuesday 26 May, to present his latest book The Neruda Case, which has just recently been translated into English. Ampuero will also talk about his career and the experiences that have proved an inspiration to his work.
Born in Valaparaíso, Roberto Ampuero has published a series of best sellers, amongst them Greek Passions, voted by the Chinese in 2006 as the best novel written in Spanish; Stockholm Lovers, book of the year in Chile in 2003, and the autobiographical fiction Our Olive Green Years, praised by Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa. He is famous for his character, private detective Cayetano Brulé, who appeared in the novels Date in the Deep Blue (2004) and Night Hawkes (2005). Another exceptional novel was incorporated to this series, thus breaking the chronological order in the life of the detective: The Neruda Case (2008), recently published in English by Souvenir Press (2012).
Ampuero’s latest book is Behind the Wall (2014), which talks about his exile in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). His work circulates in the whole of Latin America and Spain, and several translations have been published in Croatia, China, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal and now The United Kingdom. The author has lived in Chile, Cuba, the ex-GDR, currently unified Germany , Sweden, the United States, where he taught at Iowa University, and Mexico, where he was the Chilean ambassador.
The presentation of The Neruda Case, which will be held in English, has been organised by the Embassy of Chile in the United Kingdom. It will take place on Tuesday 26 May at 6:30pm at our premises. Spanish exiles in Great Britain 2: Manuel Chaves Nogales

Manuel Chaves Nogales (1987-1944), practicó el «Nuevo Periodismo» en el que combinaba elementos periodísticos y otros puramente narrativos. De ellos surgen dos brillantes libros Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales tuvo el coraje de denunciar los peligros, el sectarismo y las salvajadas de los dos enemigos de la democracia liberal, el fascismo y el comunismo, en su obra sobre la Guerra Civil española  A sangre y fuego. Al servicio de la República, cuando el Gobierno abandonó Madrid, emprendió con su familia el exilio a Francia, donde colaboró con la prensa francesa y latinoamericana. Fichado por la Gestapo, embarcó rumbo a Inglaterra, donde ejerció la profesión hasta su prematura muerte a causa de una enfermedad en 1944./ Manuel Chaves Nogales (1897-1944) practised «New Journalism», with a blend of journalistic elements and the purely narrative. He creates two outstanding books: Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales had the courage to condemn the dangers, the sectarianism and the atrocities of the two enemies of liberal democracy – fascism and comunism- in his book about the Spanish Civil War A sangre y fuego. He believed fervently in the Republic. When the Government abandoned Madrid, he went into exile with his family in France, where he collaborated with the French and Latin American press. Wanted by the Gestapo, he moved to England, where he continued as a journalist until his premature death in 1944 following an illness.

Esta antología convoca a más de cincuenta escritores mexicanos, desde los mundialmente reconocidos hasta las jóvenes voces de la actualidad. Entre todos ellos se compone un visión válida del país, su historia y sus diferentes realidades: combinando la erudición del ensayo, las perturbadoras sorpresas del cuento fantástico o lo real maravilloso, junto a fragmentos de novelas casi hiperrealistas. / A book that illustrates the very best in Mexican literature from the second half of the 20th century. This anthology gathers more than 50 Mexican  writers, from the world-renowed to the young voices of today. Together they make up a powerful vision of the country, its history and its different realities- combining erudite essays, the disqueting surprises of fantsay fiction or of the marvellously real, together with excerpts from almost hyper-realist novels.

Book Presentation: Raymond Carr: La curiosidad del zorro. A biography by María Jesús González Hernández.

Raymond Carr (Bath, Gran Bretaña, 1919) hispanista por accidente  y gusto, fue capaz de transformar la manera de escribir la historia de España y hacer que los españoles percibieran su propia tierra como un país «normal», libre de excepcionalidades y romanticismos existencialistas. Su libro de 1966, España 1801-1939, sus artículos, sus conferencias, sus brillantes discípulos José Varela Ortega, Juan Pablo Fusi o Joaquín Romero Maura y su propia inteligencia le convirtieron en una referencia ineludible / Raymond Carr (Bath, Great Britain, 1919) hispanist by accident and by design, managed to re-write the history of Spain in a way that enabled its people to see their homeland as a «normal» country, free from oddities and existential romanticism. His 1966 book Spain 1801-1939, his articles, his lectures, his brilliant disciples José Vaerla Ortega, Juan Pablo Fusi and Joaquín Romero Maura, as well as his sheer intelligence, have made him an invaluable source of reference.
